Title: William Johnston
Post by: Mick Johnston on Thursday 24 September 15 17:14 BST (UK)
I am looking for information regarding a William (possibly Robert) Johnston.  He was my Grandfathers Brother, Samuel Hugh Johnston and they had a sister called Rebecca Ellen Johnston who married and became a Swan.  They once lived in Outram street.  Any help would be useful.

Welcome to RootsChat.  :)

Can you be more precise about what you need.  For example, I can immediately see information such as the 1875 marriage of William Swan to Rebecca Johnston in Mullaghbrack Church of Ireland, as I imagine others might.

To avoid duplication of effort, can you say what you know and what you would like to know?

Thanks Gaffy but that's the wrong Swan, the Rebecca I mean married James Swan in 1922 while they both lived in Outram Street.  I know that my Grandfather lived in Outran Street in 1930 as my dad was born there, he still lived there in 1932 but died in 1933.  None of the family names I have appear in the 1911 census so I trying to find a link to their parents through William, Rebecca's and Samuel's brother.  I know my great grandfather was Edmond but have no idea who his wife was, when they were married or died.  This is what I am trying to find but am new to this game so am looking for any help I can get.

Thanks very much aghadowey, I am a little confused as I have a certified copy (issued 6/2/1933) of my Grandfathers marriage certificate and his father is down as Edmond not Edwin.  This might explain why I cannot find him on the census.  I also have Samuel (my Grandfather) living at 36 while Mary Jane lived at 23.  They married in 1929.

I'm fairly certain that the details I've posted are for your Johnston family. Note that Edwin Johnston who died in 1929 (Samuel Hugh's father) lived at 36 Outram St. It looks like the family lived in a few houses on that street (not uncommon in an era when most people were renting). You can check the Valuation Revision Books for more clues at www.proni.gov.uk

Added- Johnston is a very, very common name in Fermangh and many of them probably were either Methodist or Church of Ireland (uncle's mother was Johnston from near Boa Island and they were Methodist). Correction- mother was Armstrong but there was a Johnston connection I believe

Thanks again, I'm still confused but it seems all record data has to be looked at with some flexibility as in 10 years they have changed religion and some of the ages don't add up (depends on birth months and data collection months I know) but assuming this correct I will try to follow it up.

Brilliant, I found this but ignored it as I was looking for Edmond, looks like the marriage certificate was copied wrong.

The actual marriage record is available on GRONI's website for a small fee but I just used several indexes to get the details shown. The certificate should list their residences and fathers' names & occupations which might allow you to find further records of the family in Fermanagh (although with a surname like Johnston this may be difficult).

Just a bit more for you to follow up on after re-checking Belfast cemetery database, PRONI will extracts, etc.-

Hello  :) My grandmother was Isabella Dorothy Mary Miller known as May (nee Johnston) -whose father was Edwin Johnston, I have been involved in tracing the family tree for some years. I never been able to find Edwin's parents he is said to have been an only child. But I know where he lived in Fermanagh before moving to Belfast & have seen the house. I can get back quite far re the Fermanagh side & have photos said to be of Samuel, Nell & William Johnston, also one of Eliza Ellen Johnston - Edwin 's wife, my great grandmother (nee Nixon) & her sister Annabella. I will dust my folder off & have a look, delighted to share any info I have.  So great to 'meet' you!  All Charles & May (Miller's) children have now died except my Dad who is 86.

I'm assuming this is the marriage in "Marriages recorded in Knockmanoul Methodist Church, Darling Street, Enniskillen. 1864-1906", namely Edwin John Johnston, a farmer from Bohevny (father = William Johnston, a farmer) who got married on 23 October 1889 to Elizabeth Nixon of Cosbystown (father = Hugh Nixon, a farmer):

That being the case, is the following a possible candidate?  In "Births recorded in Knockmanoul Methodist Church, Darling Street, Enniskillen. 1823-1932", Edwin John Johnston, born 17 April 1863, baptised 16 May 1863, parents William Johnston and Elizabeth [not listed]:

Hello gaffy and many many thanks. Yes indeed this is Edwin John Johnston from Bohevny. I thought he was born around 1864 so this is def him, Apologies - on getting my folder out of storage I see his mother was indeed Elizabeth with the maiden name I have is Forster. The 1901 census shows Edwin had sold the farm Bohevny by 31st March 1901 to a family called Kerr and moved to Belfast. Family legend stated that they intended to go from Belfast to Australia, but his wife Elizabeth Ellen (Eliza) (as you've already recorded here) died 13th April 1907. Though this was over 6 years since they moved from Fermanagh so presume they changed their minds? I know I have details for Eliza's family - the Nixon's back to about 1776 I think.  Thanks again :D

That's brilliant, Edwin was my great grandfather, with your help I now have my g/g grandfather and grandmother, strangely Eliza died on my birthday.

Isabella, I would really like to see the pictures you have of Samuel (my grandfather) and any information on the Nixon family.  Your father is my father's cousin, my dad was also called Samuel Hugh.

Hello Mick, it's just so amazing to see your posts as I've often thought of my Granny May's family. I will def look those photos out for you. In the photo I believe to be of Samuel he's wearing a sailor uniform with HMS Pembroke on the hat. He is v young, Nell just looks beautiful with long wavy hair. I thought my paperwork was put away in good order but looking it out last night it's not so good! But will sort it out & make sure you have copies of every detail, photo & certificate I have.  :D bye for now take care.

Hello Mick, another one as all seems to be going well so far! This is our great grandmother Eliza Ellen Johnston nee Nixon, Edwin's wife. She is on the right as you look at the picture. She's with her sister Annabella and they are dressed the same as they are bridesmaids. I have a better picture of this framed so will scan it too when I get it out of the frame. The wedding took place in Fermanagh I believe.

Hello again Mick, last one for now - this is Isabella Dorothea Mary Johnston (May Miller) with my Uncle Billy, taken at the shop she owned in Ormeau Street ( long gone!) off the Ormeau Road. I remember it very clearly, the living room and kitchen were at the back of the shop with bedrooms and bathroom above on 2 storeys. Bye for now.  :D

Isabella, thank you very much for those pictures.
I can see my father in Samuel and he did serve in the navy but was medically discharged, I have his service record.  My dad tried to follow in his footsteps but could not pass the medical as his legs were different lengths although he did not limp or show it.  Thanks again, I am now on the trail of William (Edwin's dad) so am trawling the 1851 census, if I find anything I will let you know.

 Hello
The beautiful photo's drew me into this thread, I noticed a couple in particular the man in the uniform and the named shop. I have been searching for Nixon's myself and I wonder if there might be a connection. I have an almost identical photo to the man in uniform, although I believe mine is of a Nixon boy.  The resemblance is uncanny, although the uniform may be helping. James Nixon born in  abt 1828 is my 2nd Great grandfather, Born in Glenish Ireland, His Father was called James Nixon also and estimate him to be born about 1807. I do not know anything of who he married, Ie I don't know the younger James Nixon Mum.  My 2nd great grandfather came over to the uk in the 1850's I believe with 2 other of the Nixon family, although I have never managed to trace those other people.    I happen to have had my dna done and I am  supposed to match with quite a few people with the name Miller, I haven't managed to work  any of the miller matches out at all.  I just thought I would mention this, as it all just seemed a little coincidental.
