Title: Tracing Alexander Rose form Scotland
Post by: Awa on Wednesday 30 September 15 04:45 BST (UK)
I am trying to trace Alexander's parents & birth place in Scotland.
He arrived in Tasmania about 1824 & was aged 20 yrs, he died in Launceston Tasmania in 1870 aged 66yrs so his birth would have been about 1804. Alexander married Isabella Leonora Robley 27 April 1831 in Launceston & had 2 sons David & William, Isabella died in 1840.
Alexander travelled back to Scotland & married at Kirkhill, Madgiline McTavish daughter of Mr H McTavish of Dunballock 17 Nov 1842.
Looking forward to any help.

I note that he married in Inverness in 1842, there were 4 baptisms in Inverness-shire is between 1804 & 1807.
The name is quite common and there were a large number of Alexander Rose’s born in Scotland in that period. Do you have any information that might narrow the place down?

You might find additional information on Scotlands People website.

I have just realised 2 of the 4 I mentioned were Ross, not Rose, so I think the following is most likely, as he was the only one baptised in the county around 1804, as far as I can see.

Alexander   Rose
Baptism 16 May 1806   Petty, Invernessshire
Father Alexander Rose   Mother Margaret Russel

There was a later baptism but they had another Alexander baptised there in 1811.
Alexander   Rose
Baptism 10 Sep 1807   Duthil With Rothiemurchus, Invernessshire
Father Alexr. Rose   Mother Ann Macintosh

Alexander Rose with mother Margaret is still in Petty on the 1841 census, which would seem to rule him out as a candidate.

Thank you Colin & Bev for your replies.

Sorry Colin I haven't any info as to where Alexander is from in Scotland.
Yes Alexander is a very common name that is what I found.
Alexander was 38yrs & Madgaline was 20yrs when married 18 yrs difference.
I wonder if he came from the area where the McTavish family lived & did he know the family before he left for Tasmania in the 1820's?
Someone might be able to put the 2 names together in the near future, I hope,
Will keep on looking & your suggestion to look at Scotlands People website, will do that.

Does he appear on any census from 1851 onwards where a more specific place of birth might be given?
Bev

EDIT Sorry I just reread your post and see that he returned to Tasmania so maybe he returned before 1851.
Have you tried the Tasmanian names index on the offchance that some document might give more information?

Could he be linked to the Rose family ( John Rose and Barb(a)ra nee McKenzie) living at Kirkton, Kirkhill in both 1841 and 1851 (Freecen - NB listed as Ross in 1841).

The timescale is so compressed that I see two possibilities.
He was a widower with a young family in a country where women were in short supply.
Either he knew the McTavish family already, suggesting that perhaps he came from the same area, or else he 'advertised' in some way for a wife from back home.

Sorry I haven't replied sooner.
Yes Alexander did take his 2 young children over to Scotland for the wedding. They are on the passenger list leaving Tasmania & I found them in the 1841 census the right ages  staying at "Mansion House of Torbreck"(WWW.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl) but no Alexander on the list (may be he was out with Magdaline that night). I dont know what date the census was taken but they would have arrived in Scotland April some time I think.
Does anyone know anything about the House of Torbreck? As the marriage was in Kirkhill is this house near by. I have had a look but nothing concrete yet, will keep on looking.
