Title: Death of Edward Watkins, railway accident
Post by: sirsimon on Saturday 03 October 15 17:23 BST (UK)
Hello

I was speaking to a relative the other day, he said that Edward Watkins, husband of Joanna Mary McNamara, whom was born in 1891, Neath and lived in Bridgend died after a railway accident in Maesteg after being struck by some sort of vehicle.

I checked find my past and couldn't find a newspaper clipping of the incident, I am not sure when it occurred

I would appreciate it if someone could check the newspaper archives website to see if there is anything on the event

thanks

Haven't you checked freebmd to establish exactly when he died?

There's this death, the birth year is a bit off, but Edward's birth year was consistently given as 1892 on the census

Deaths Jun 1933

Watkins  Edward  40  Bridgend  11a 777

Its the only one on free bmd that looks plausible

Are you sure it was her husband who died this way? there's a tree for Joanna on Ancestry that notes her father John died "near Oakwood crossing, Maesteg" in August 1909

This article gives the history of how he was hit by a train

thanks for the find

Odd, he said it was Edward Watkins the husband, not her father.

I have contacted him to see if this is correct

thanks

According to my cousin, he says that the newspaper article is referring to Edward Watkins's father in law John

Edward was however still killed in an accident. He says that he worked with pit ponies at a mine and one of the ponies bolted and the sled crushed him

So Edward Watkins  didn't die in a railway accident - he died in a mining accident?

Edward married Mary McNamara in 1915

It seems like it now, my cousin initially said on a railway involving a small vehicle, I assumed he meant a railway, didn't know he meant a track at a colliery

Yes he married Mary in 1915, my cousin is the grandson of their daughter, whilst I am the great grandson of Edward's sister

He still hasn't given me a death date, he said there was a newspaper clipping, but either he hasn't found it yet or it doesn't exist anymore

If you or your cousin know which colliery he worked at - it's possible there could still be a record of the accident

As the 1933 death seems to be the likeliest - perhaps a copy of the death cert could throw some light on things

Hi CaroleW

I have emailed my cousin asking which colliery he worked at

I think Edward lived around Aberkenfig around the time of accident

This might be totally in the wrong area of the UK to be your fella, but i found this.

Citizen [Gloucester , England] Friday February 16 1923

COLLIERY FATALITY IN DEAN FORREST
MINER KILLED BY FALL OF COAL
Late on Thursday evening at the Albert and Edward Colliery at Lydbrook, owned by the Lydney and Crump Meadow co., Cinderford, Dean Forrest, Edward Watkins , a married man with children, was fatally injured by a fall of coal and earth from the roof of the coal face where he was working. His companion, name Tingle, escaped.

Hi Giblet

Interesting find, but I doubt that it is Edward, it states he was killed by a fall of coal, Edward died by being crushed by a wagon

According to my cousin he died in Tondu in 1936

It is a possibility he worked at Parc Slip Colliery, as it was the mine that served the Tondu community

Presume you have already checked freebmd and not found a death in 1936

Yes, I checked and there wasn't a death in 1936, only plausible option is 1933.

I can get hold of the death certificate and find out if it is him

I think that's your best option.  If it confirms the cause of death you will at least have an actual date of death to work from.  It's quite possible you may find a coroners report

Hi guys

Got the death certificate, its the correct death. Edward died in 1933. Cause of death was being hit by a truck of some sorts.

An inquest was held on 19th April 1933.

He died in Tondu

Quite ironic that both the husband and the father of Joanna McNamara would be killed by being struck by large vehicles.

With an inquest existing, there should be a newspaper article somewhere

So far, looking for a newspaper article online has come up with very little. The website with the historic newspapers of wales does not go as far as 1933 and I am currently unable to get hold of the coroner inquest.

So far I have
G.grandad Oliver Albert watkins married Rhesa Stephens
G g.Grandad Albert married Jane. Oliver also had sister Beatrice. In1901 census they lived in Yardley. All were born in Cinderford area. In 1903? They moved to Abertillery. I am wondering if Edward is any relation
