Title: William Moffat burial place
Post by: cupcake on Thursday 08 October 15 09:49 BST (UK)
My GGG Grandparents died in Carlisle, Cumberland and would like to find their burial place.

William MOFFAT died 11 January 1848 his wife Christian MOFFAT (Fraser) died March 1846. Have looked at the "Annandale People in Carlisle Newspapers in the Death Intimations" for 1775 - 1858 but, with no joy.

William MOFFAT was a blacksmith in Annan and, thought perhaps they were buried there but, Annan do not have death records before 1855. So, I had almost given up ever finding their death dates. Then I received some family tree info from Australia, which has their death dates.

Any information would be very much appreciated.

Regards

I checked the Richardson Street cemetery records and they are not buried there but there is at least two other cemetery's in Carlisle, one in Upperby and one in Stanwix, do not know if their records are online

Municipal cemeteries didn't exist before c1856.  They came into being following the 1855 Burial Act.  Before that, burials were in churchyards. :)

Have you see the death certificates for William and Christian to confirm the dates?

I can't see any William Moffat on freebmd for March quarter of 1848 (there is one in December 1848), and for Christian Moffat, there is one death listed for March quarter 1846.

This possibly matches this death, listed in the Carlisle Journal
April 11th 1846 Carlisle Journal
At Houghton on the 28th ult, Miss Christiana Moffat, aged 58 years, much respected.

I don't know if this is the right age for your Christian Moffat, but it might be worth looking at Houghton churchyard to see if you can confirm it is the right one?

It doesn't sound like anyone's wife.

There is what appears to be an unmarried Christian MOFFAT aged 45+ in Houghton, Stanwix in 1841 - can't see her in 1851.

robbiesmum,

No, I haven't seen the death certificates to confirm William & Christian's dates. Christian would have been 69 years in 1846.

The only family I am aware they had was:

James MOFFAT (shoemaker) died Annan 1857 on his death cert it mentions his parents were deceased.
Joseph MOFFAT (my GG Grandfather) he moved to Newton Stewart.

They may have had a daughter and, decided to live with her in Carlisle.

Might be worth a look at the Houghton churchyard. Is it anywhere near Houghton Hall garden centre?

Yes, Houghton church is near the garden centre - if you take the turning off the motorway on the A689 towards the garden centre, you can see St John's church on the right.
Where were William and Christian living in the 1841 census?

Thank you for the information on the cemetery. Hopefully get there soon.

I am afraid I don't know where William & Christian were living in 1841. Have found my research on my GGG Grandparents rather difficult as in, lacking information, partly due to Annan not having BMD's before 1855. William MOFFAT was a Blacksmith in Annan.

The William MOFFAT who died in 1848 was possibly the one who was 85 in 1841 and living in Carlisle.

The Christian MOFFAT who died in Houghton in 1846 was apparently a single woman and living with her mother (Eleanor) in 1841.

Incidentally, there were deaths of William MOFFITs in 1837, 1839 (both Carlisle) and 1847 (Longtown).

The William MOFFAT 85 yrs would be too old - my William was born 1772 and would have been  76 yrs in 1848.
The Christian MOFFAT doesn't appear to be my GGG Grandmother.

Thank you for the death dates for William Moffit's though, spelling not right.

I think possibly the Christian Moffat who died in 1846 aged 58 might be this lady buried at Gretna:

To the memory of Alexander MOFFAT in Guards mill who died Decr 29th 1794 in the 39th year of his age. Also Christian daughter of the above who died the 28th of March 1846 aged 58 years. Also John MOFFAT his brother who died at Millhill 9th of Feby 1819 aged 66 years. Also Elenor ARMSTRONG wife of Alexer MOFFAT who died 18th of Dec 1848 aged 87 years.

so she doesn't sound like your Christian Moffat.

Do you know the latest date Christian was alive? (ie when was her last child baptised?) Is it possible, if you can't find them in the 1841 census, that Christian died and William had married again?

I did wonder if William had re-married. Don't have James Moffat or Joseph Moffat's birth entries.

Will pay a visit to the library and see if there have any OPR's. Joseph Moffat (my GG Grandfather) was born Abt. 1802 Annan? Dumfries. They may have had a daughter - Catherine, named after William's mother.

But looking closer at their son's death certificates they have their parents as William Moffat and Christina Moffat (Fraser) - not Christian.

Thank you for taking the time to help.

I have now posted on a Scotland forum, as I  found a Christian MOFFAT on a 1841 census aged 64. Nothing to lose.

Perhaps the dates and places I have are incorrect.

Many thanks for your help.

Have had a reply from the Scotland forum and the Christian MOFFAT is a male  :-[. So, I'll continue to research for Christina MOFFAT.
