It has come up on a baptism record, and the baptism was in Fetteresso. Is this placename still in use? Thank you very much.
The baby was born there and the father is from Jewel I think.
If the witnesses were the Kirk Session (and the record does not say the mother is the wife of the father) that would mean the baby was illegitimate?

Would it be possible to post the word here, and if possible some of the surrounding writing so we can get a feel for the style.
Have you checked other baptisms (if there are any on the same or adjacent pages) in case the place name is written elsewhere and more clearly or differently in other examples.
What is the date of the baptism?

If the child has been illegitimate (usually indicated by the term "natural"), there may be further information to be found in the Kirk Session records, if the parents have been admonished for their behaviour.

Thank you. It's from 1835. I see Tewel now.
I'd thought that when later census records said she was unmarried it was because she was widowed, and she used her maiden name because many Scots women did. I've since found the record of her death, and the informant says she was unmarried.
All the other entries on the page mention a wife. Unlike others I've come across in Scotland this hasn't mentioned "natural", or any of the other phrases the minister could use.
Thanks to your FreeCen clue I've found them in 1841 with a transcription error in his mother's surname.
