Title: Mundow
Post by: Neli on Monday 12 October 15 00:28 BST (UK)
Did anyone ever know or hear about anyone of the name Mundow? It is quite unusual and I am not having much luck finding out about the family.

I'm one! My father, William, is mentioned in the 1911 census referred to here. His father was also William born 1878 and he worked on Guinness Boats. I have found a record of a medal he was awarded at end of WW1. He , my grandfather , is buried in Deans Grange and I have visited his grave,

They lived in 35 Tivoli Terrace East, Dun Laoghaire. One brother went to UK - Robert. I have a picture of him and will upload when i dig it out.

Davemm - there is a photo of your grand dad on Findmypast.com, they have his CR10 Merchant Navy card, so the photo was taken as he signed up (probably in Liverpool) or you can get a much better quality version from Southampton Archives if you follow the Irishmariners link that Dathai posted earlier. It gives you the information for them to find the card and they charge £2 + £1.25 each for the colour prints (front and back)

Thanks for that Hasta. I'd love to have a copy so will try and go there now.

Just found a William Mundow marriage to Anne Walsh 9th Feb 1839 in the Parish of St Mary in Dublin. I'll ask the cousin who is a priest where that is.

Found this 1930: my father bottom left ( Billy)

I dont get the Colgan connection? The link says its a Colgan and Window marriage?

I tidied up grandfathers grave recently and got a son included whose name was never added. I'll upload it now.

The 1901 Census is a branch of the family but its not part of my lot! I remember my father telling me there were two branches of the family. (Enc 1901 Census form also for this other branch. There is a William but the ages wouldn't tie in)

Thats amazing_ no doubt about it, thats him. I have applied for a copy of his Seamans Discharge book from Southampton. I'm going to start drawing a tree and put it up for your input and suggestions....or maybe you have started one?

My father told me also that he had a brother  Christopher, who died aged 5 or 6 from TB.
I know also he had one or two sisters who were nuns and worked in Africa all their lives. I'll ask the priest (Henry's son). I also know that my father's mother's maiden name was Byrne ( I have her prayer book)

There  is a monument at the beginning of the East Pier in Dun Laoghaire and on many walks with my father he always pointed out to me that we were related to the "Edward Crowe" on the monument.

On going back over the earlier posts, I realize now that Edward Crowe is the son of my grandfather's twin sister Elizabeth.

There is quite a network of Mundows in the Dun Laoghaire area - Glasthule, Kingstown, Monktown in the records, all seem to be related. I am interested in this surname as it seems to be used interchangeably with Muldow, a surname I am definitely interested in. There is a Bernard Muldow who was a sailor who is also referred to as Mundow in records. My Muldows were in the Killiney area.
