Title: Symbols in emails.
Post by: wilcoxon on Saturday 24 October 15 18:50 BST (UK)

On writing an email just  now I noticed that (6) converts itself to a devil, and (8) to a musical note.
If I leave a space between the brackets then they don`t appear
What`s going on.  ???

I think it depends on the particular text editor as to whether/how brackets are converted to the dreaded 'emoticons'  >:(

My email client has a 'plain text only' option somewhere in the settings, so I guess most others do too.

Leaving a gap after the opening and before the closing bracket usually avoids the problem.

Mike.

Well - changing to plain text in emails worked, but still not on here

if you click on the 'cool' dude in a reply on here and look in the text box, you see a round bracket and 8 displayed.

all emoticons are based on a combination of charcters, not all of them are recognised on Rootschat

There is a 'remove formating' button (under the 'change colour' drop down box) but it doesn't seem to work on emoticons.

I'll ask Trystan for a reply.

(other than that don't type 8 followed by a round bracket)

or leave spaces:

with spaces ( 8 )

without (8)

Not the ideal solution, but possibly the only one if the editor insists on inserting emoticons :-\

Emoticons.  The blasted things should be taxed.

Try using square brackets or curly brackets instead?

[6] [8]
{6} {8}

Works for me!! ;D ;D

Thanks.
It was mostly the emails that were a concern. I`d never come across it before .
