Title: Portlaw - which district to search 1901 census?
Post by: rossendalerose on Thursday 29 October 15 08:51 GMT (UK)
Trying to track down PATRICK JOHN MURPHY  born 1883 in Portlaw. He married in 1907 in London and is living there with his new family in 1911. N/T of him in England in 1901.

I have searched the Irish 1901 records but I can't sort out which township or DED I should be looking at. Portlaw is 23 km from Waterford - will it come under a different district? There are so many Patrick Murphy's that I need to narrow down the geographical search. Can someone point me in the right direction? -thanks. Rose H

He's not in Portlaw?! ::)

I used this page: http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Waterford/Portlaw/

And checked every townland/street.

What was the name of his father - from the marriage certificate?

Just to note that there is an 1883 birth for a Patrick Murphy registered at Portlaw for parents John Murphy (a shoemaker) and Sarah Callaghan of Brown Street, but with such a common name, best to get his marriage record first to see the father's details.

Ah, also just noticed a Patrick Murphy born 1886 with birth registered at Portlaw for parents Maurice Murphy and Bridget Murphy of 40 Georges Street, so you are right to get the marriage certificate.

Since Patrick was about 18 in 1901 it's possible that he may not be living at home in the census- if that's the case (and I remember seeing at least one candidate in Waterford who was a servant in employer's household) then it may be impossible to find him in the 1901 census.
