With more information offered than NSW ;D
Mother's maiden name on births and deaths.
Sue
-
And deaths to 1988...well only searched for my own rellies.
Cando

Whoo-hoo!
Thanks, Cando for passing this on.

And yes, loads more info on the index than NSW. Including I must add .... a heading "Sex" and for my couple of Vic births .... they have noted their sex as "unknown"
My ancient, but alive and alert rellies, including the retired NSW BDM chap .... they are 'beside' themselves .... appreciating the index and trying hard to find a flaw. They can only find the "unknown" response as a possible flaw. So, I will defend Vic BDM and say "Well, if NSW were to have such a heading, would it have the staff on hand to go through all the historic NSW BDM records and determine, one by one, if the record shows the birth was for a male or for a female" .... and ummm .... there must have been a line fault as the phone went dead on the STD call. ::) :P
Perhaps HE will join RChat .... it won't cost him any brass .... and he knows lots....
Cheers, JM

Ah...they are making research so easy ::) :P
I won't worry so much about my BDM discs failing now and will enjoy suggesting people do their own searching :P :P

Sex????
Well, if it is a birth there must have been some...................... :P ::) ;D :D :o
(Not necessarily so these days, though)
Judith, apologising as she could not help but but up this post :-[

Cando many thanks.
Have tried enquiries and got great results however saving the results as PDF files produces files with very small characters necessitating turning-up the magnification on my pdf readers. I used three different freeware PDF creators (actually pdf printer drivers) to create the pdf files so I assume it is a VIC BDM Registry issue.

Johnno

Thank you Cando! :)
That has to be a worldwide first doesn't it? Making something free that you used to have to pay for? :-\
I haven't looked into this yet, but before I do, in case anyone already knows ... why did they do this? :)
-
Did the fee for a downloaded certificate increase in price to counter the revenue lost with the search changes.

$24 cost for image has been in place for several months....?July.
Golly Johnno I've downloaded many images of Vic certs over the years. Just increase the magnification. Really no problem after all it is only one image on the page of the register you are interested in.

Ditto
Thank you for the alert Cando :)

Just had a look at a couple. :)
Trying not to nitpick and ultimately if it isn't there it isn't there!! BUT - I was led to believe that the parents ages were put on the birth certificates - now as we are only seeing extracts I was still hoping it would be shown - obviously not, or did I pick the one or two that aren't showing?
-
Only an index...if you wish to see the complete certificate you need to purchase an image ;D.
Cando ;D
-
Thought so :(
:D

I just did a quick search for my father, ticked all three events as suggested by JM,only his death showed up but abbreviation of given names was commonly used in indices so you need to do a secondary search before calling it quits.
As Cando says, will save wear on discs.
-
Oops I misunderstood. I thought all of the information from the certificates was viewable online. :-[
Thought that was too good to be true. ::)
-
Thanks for alerting me to the VICBDM Index now online - it is so much better now - so I ordered and downloaded a certificate just to test it out - very simple.
-
Great news. I wish I had known this two weeks ago. I paid for 24 index pages (at 99c each) using a particular surname hunting for possible relies. :'(
-
I wonder though if they might raise the price of images as a result? I always speculated that the relatively low price for images ($25, used to be $20) was because they were charging for index searches? NSW is $31 and SA $45 (admittedly these are certified copies, rather than just images).
-
Cando,
Thanks for alerting us to this update. Yes it will certainly save your discs from anymore wear.
What will you do now......housework. ;D ;D
I'm hoping they keep adding more years to the death records, if they do I maybe able to find my OH elusive uncle's death.

Thanks cando for the news :)
My little gripe might be that you don't seem to get the place of birth on
the marriages like we have on the discs. Am I missing something?
But still very happy with what we have got ;D

A few shortcomings....
No places of birth on marriage index.
Can't search with parents' names or places of birth/death.
Can't search with mother's maiden name only.
Always the same....if something works well then make it more cumbersome. What a procedure to purchase an image ::) ::)......I resent being asked for my name and residential address and email address. Only name was required on the old system and email address and phone number an option. I only put a name :-X :-X. I can't see a facility to collect an image at a later date as was available previously. I don't need any certs so I have no need to use the new facility.
I think I'll keep on using my discs. However a good resource for those who don't have them.
Cheers

Images were raised to $24 in ?July. I doubt the $20 and $17.50 charged in past years were because of the index searches. So many people have discs/fiche and they are available at libraries, genealogy centres, online subscription websites or one could request lookups at one of the many online family history forums. If you wanted to purchase an image you only need the surname, event, registration number and year so why would you search the index for .99.
In NSW and SA you can obtain transcriptions so why purchase certified certificates.
I'm going to mark this topic as completed as I don't feel it is needed any longer and I ask a mod to move it to the Resources and Offers Board for Victoria.
Cheers
