Title: Talmage E Dawson (1894-1974) Look Up Requests
Post by: briankaess on Thursday 19 November 15 20:01 GMT (UK)
Info on Talmage E Dawson (1894-1974) and Family

PFC Talmage Edward Dawson, b. Oct 9, 1894 in Topeka, Kansas- d. May 8 1974,
Northbrook, IL. Married many times. Married to Margaret Jane Swartz on Dec 11 1952 in Cook
County, Illinois. This may have been their 2nd marriage. One Daughter: Marie Ellen Dawson (1945-2012). One Daughter from unknown mother: (*) Dawson. Talmage was a native of Kansas. Worked as a Typographer for the Pittsburg Kansan, a Kansas newspaper. Registered for the Draft for WW1 in Crawford County, Kansas, on June 5 1917. Served in the U.S.Army in WW1 on the West Front in France. Enlisted in the U.S.Army in May 28 1918 and was Honorably discharged on Jun 8 1919. Served in HQ's Co, 351st Inf Reg, 88th Infantry Division. Saw action in Haute Alsace Sector.  Entitled to wear a gold war service decoration. Talmage’ name appears on a unit roster of the American 88th Division in WWI. Margaret J Dawson said he suffered from ’shell-shock.’
Talmage reputedly fought in Russia in 1919-1920 but this is only a family story passed down by his former wife Margaret Jane Swartz (1914-1997).

What I am looking for is info about the first wives (and families) of Talmage E Dawson- he appears to have been married multiple times based on the US census. I am also looking for info on Wanda Dawson, perhaps his 1st daughter who was reputedly born in the USA (Kansas or Illinois presumably)in circa 1932. Little is known about her except that she met her half-sister Mary Ellen Dawson (1945-2012) as a little girl in the 1950’s in Evanston, Illinois or nearby.
Other questions: Who is Talmage E Dawson’s Father? I have David Bennett Dawson but am unsure.
There was also rumored to have been a (*) Dawson (b. abt 1955 or so in the USA) who was either a half brother or half cousin to Marie Ellen Dawson (b. 1945 in Chicago, d. 2012 in Cook County, IL). (*) was a direct descendant of Talmage Dawson. There was a grade school picture of (*) (black and white) from the circa 1960's, presumably in America. Any info on him (*) would be great.

Welcome to RootsChat

The person that you mention born 1955 is probably a  living person - RootsChat has a policy not to name living people so you should remove there names.

The 1900 census appears to show Talmage with parents David B Dawson and Alvira Mansfield
These parents are also shown on an anc tree.

David B Dawson  42 Alvira Dawson  37
Burtle Dawson  18 Charles Dawson  10 Cora Dawson  8
Talmage Dawson  5

There appears to be an article or letter written by him from France in 1919 here:  http://www.newspapers.com/newspage/132795037/

I didn't see an obit for him in the Chicago Tribune.

The Social Security Death Index has his last residence as Northbrook, Illinois.  If nothing else is found, you could try e-mailing their library and see if they would be willing to do a look-up.  http://www.northbrook.info/form/ask-us

Talmage E Dawson mentions his brother Charles Dawson in a WWI-era letter from the Front to his mom (in Kansas), pub. Jan 1919. An excerpt from this letter can be found at:

Hello Brian,

Talmage E. Dawson and Sadie Huseman are my maternal grandparents.  Wanda Lou Dawson is my mother.  I think the person born around 1955 that you are referencing might be my older half-sibling.  PM me for more details.

Talmage E Dawson was buried in Archer Woods Cemetery in Willow Springs, Illinois, on May 3 1974. He died on May 1 1974. The funeral home was Hanekamp Funeral Home in Glenview, Illinois. Also, Talmage middle name was confirmed as Edward by a 1942 WWII Draft Registration.

One relative said,  " I note that Talmage registered for the 1942 draft in Washington, DC.  My mom [Wanda Lou Dawson] talked about them living there during WWII.  They lived on Embassy Row, or Talmage's work was on Embassy Row, I can't remember which.  My mom used to play with the kids from the Thai embassy next door .  She and Talmage played cards during blackouts, when they would have to put stuff up on the windows to block out the light in case of an air raid.  I'm not sure exactly what work he did in Washington DC, but I keep thinking it was for the State Department.  I can't remember if either of my parents told me that, or somehow that's just the impression I got.  My dad said my mom thought Talmage looked like the Duke of Windsor.  My dad agreed that he looked aristocratic (his words)....
My mom [Wanda Lou Dawson] said Talmage and Margaret had a stormy relationship. She thought Margaret was a very stylish woman."

Talmage may have had a sister named Margaret May Dawson (1884-1965), not to be confused with his 3rd wife Margaret Jane Swartz (1914-1997). This Margaret May Dawson was married to William Martin Frye (1877-1941). There appear to be a number of events linking Margaret May Dawson to the Dawson's of Kansas. Margaret May Dawson may even appear on a Kansas census with her Mother Alvira Mansfield (d. 1932).
Any help in finding records in early 20th century Kansas would be appreciated.

There are at least two images of Talmage Edward Dawson (1894-1974) that were found in his Official Personnel File (OPF) when he worked for the U.S. Govt. Printing Office (GPO) as a Linotype Operator from circa 1939 to 1945. These were found in a roughly 106 page OPF at NARA St. Louis, courtesy of George Fuller.
