Title: Twomey Dwyer Family Tree
Post by: bevcal on Saturday 28 November 15 05:11 GMT (UK)
Hi,
Adding to information below.
I am looking for:
1) Immigration records for Sarah Twomey (nee Bennett) and husband. Waiting for marriage certificate to confirm parents of Edward George Twomey.
2) Also need to clarify if the Edward Twomey (Miner)  at Gympie is my Edward George Twomey.  Edward George Twomey is buried at 1929 Balmoral Cemetery and so is Maurice Twomey who died in 1944. Not sure if this my family.
3) Edward George and Edith Alice Twomey both died young and their surviving son Leonard Henry Twomey was reared by step sister Ena Graham (nee Mantle).
4) Also looking for immigration, Marriage and/or birth records for John Dwyer and Anne King.
                                                      ---------------------------------

I am looking for ancestral information for Thomas Patrick Dwyer (?1851-1939)  who married or partnered Hannah Levy ( ?1858 - 1945)  about 1877. Unable to find marriage confirmation.  Together they had eight children. Initially they were in NSW  Australia but by 1908 they had settled in Ipswich Qld Australia. Hannah is buried in the Ipswich Cemetery Qld and Thomas Toowong Cemetery .  Hannah's parents  were Joseph Levy and ? Thompson and Thomas' father was known as John (maybe James) and mother  Anne King.
Also looking for information on Edward George Twomey who married Edith Alice Josephine Dwyer / Mantle (1884 -1931) on  16 Dec 1922.  Edith was daughter of Thomas and Hannah Dwyer and this was her second marriage.  She had five children from her 1st marriage to Joseph Patrick Mantle and two with George  Twomey her 2nd marriage.

If anyone can assist with info would love to hear from you,
Thanks Bevcal

You need a birth certificate for a child born to Thomas DWYER and Hannah to see birthplace and age of parents.........

Maybe try this one in NSW
13819/1891  DWYER Arthur R        Glen Innes
parents  Thomas / Hannah

.....and previous issue born to this couple.

Thomas Patrick DWYER d. 1939 is buried Toowong Cemetery, with daughter Edith Alice TWOMEY d. 1931, daughter-in-law Jessie DWYER d. 1928 and Ivy May Belle MANTLE d. 1932.

The family had earlier been up at Yarraman in the timber milling business.

As Merlin suggests, the answers to your questions are in the replies already given.
The year of the removal from WA to QLD cannot be ascertained precisely, but the Electoral Roll details give a good indication.

bevcal,
I would strongly suggest you download the 1922 marriage  certificate of Edward George TWOMEY and Edith Alice MANTLE.

https://www.bdm.qld.gov.au/IndexSearch/queryEntry.m?type=births

It is the only way to tie all the threads together and be a little more certain we have the right  family history.

The extensive information on the certificate will have been given by the couple themselves and I am particularly interested to know Edward's age at marriage.

The only indication I have found of Edward's age is from the cemetery record (which I have linked above) and shows 48 years at death.  We have not located a birth record in Victoria.

The shipping list shows Sarah to be 19 years in 1852 so about 48 in 1881. :o

There is an inaccuracy somewhere! ::)

Also we suspect Maurice TWOMEY, Sarah's husband, may have died in May 1880 .

Hi,

Jus a bit of info

Note:  If you are researching Maurice Augustus Twomey I believe that he was also just called Gus Twomey or as per the 1899 WA PO Directory, Gustave Twomey, hairdresser at Yarloop.  After being the Publican at Yarraman for a few years when they came over from WA he moved to  Tweed Heads and became a hairdresser again then in about 1918 moved onto Sydney.

Maurice Augustus (Gus) Twomey died in NSW in 1963 age 86 parents, Thomas and Elizabeth. B.

Also, the Edward Twomey on the Qld State Electoral Roll in 1900 at Gympie had been born about 1869 as he registered as 31 when he qualified to be on the roll in 1900.

Gippsland Times Monday 17th May 1880, page 3.

Amongst all the local news and events appears this.

"Yesterday a man names Maurice Twomey died whilst being conveyed to the Hospital from the Star Hotel.  He was suffering from heart disease."

Same newspaper but on page 2, the funeral notice.

Maybe Maurice was involved somehow with the Star Hotel which I think was located in Sale.

Marriage on 1st December 1851, Ballymore, County Armagh, Ireland
Maurice Toomey, father, Thomas and Sarah Bennett, father, Thomas.
Gerry

Good on you Gerry!
I had no success in searching there for the marriage, but the trick must have been in the surname spelling ;D

Bevcal
How old was Edward at marriage please?
Does he state Maurice and Sarah as his parents?
Where was his usual place of residence at marriage?

Glad to hear the research has been in the right direction. ;D

Sue

Sue here is the info:
Edward George Toomey aged 45, Born Maffra Gippsland Victoria Australia,  Parents:  Maurice Toomey (Farmer) and Sarah Bennett HD
Edith Mantle Widow Aged 39, Born Koola NSW, Parents: Thomas Patrick Dwyer (Farmer) and Hannah Levy
Married on 16 Dec 1922
Married  at "Auburn"  Church Street Toowong Brisbane Qld Australia
Usual place of residence: Kennedy Street Windsor for both of them.
Marriage conducted according to Rites Baptist Church
Witnessed by Maurice James and  Eleanor A Toomey
QLD BMD: B31389  -
This would make Edwards birth date 1877.

So am I.... so pleased to have received all this info....   I have been searching too but have to go to the library to access things like Electoral rolls etc.... that can be difficult when time poor...

Mmmm...
45 at marriage giving birthdate of 1877.

The child Sarah and Maurice had in 1878 at Maffra was named Timothy TWOMEY.
She was then 45.

I think it unlikely there was another birth to her the following or previous year.

I have had a quick scan around for records of this Timothy, but cannot place a Timothy in the same areas or make a connection with the others we know of the family. Others may do better ;D

So we may never know whether Edward and Timothy TWOMEY were one in the same.

Whether there was  no registration..

Whether the registration never made it to the record-keepers.

Hi,

Great news about the marriage certificate but as for Edward's age don't necessarily believe that he was 45.  I have a number of marriage certificates were older men have adjusted their age backwards when they were married.

Even though we haven't at this point in time found his birth registration in reality Edward was probably older than 45.

Yes, Gerry.
I agree  ;D (especially from his mother's age being 19 in 1852)

He very likely wanted to move closer in age to the new wife and no proof of age was required.

Hi, A bit more information on Edward and Edith Twomey.

Many of the earlier Queensland State Electoral Rolls held at the Queensland State Archives were annotated by Electoral Officers for things such as, not voting, a death, a change of name, a change of electorate etc and with respect to Edward and Edith Twomey we find a few interesting facts.

The 1923 Qld State Electoral Roll.
The Electoral District of Windsor.
Edward Twomey, Kennedy St, Windsor.
Edith Mantle, Kennedy St, Windsor. With Mantle crossed out and annotated Twomey.

Edward qualified to be on that roll on 21st Nov 1922 and Edith Mantle on 5th Jan 1923.

1925 Qld State Electoral Roll
The Electoral District of Windsor.
Edward Twomey, Kennedy St, Windsor, timber worker.
Edith Twomey, Kennedy St, Windsor, house wife.

1926 Qld State Electoral Roll
The Electoral District of Windsor.
Edith Twomey, Kennedy St, Windsor, house wife. Annotated "Cairns"
Edward Twomey, Kennedy St, Windsor, timber worker.  ditto

This indicates a move to the Cairns Electorate.

1927 Qld State Electoral Roll
The Electoral District of Cairns
Edward Twomey, Minnie St, Cairns, Sawyer. Qualified to be on the roll, 6th April 1926.
Edith Twomey, Minnie St, Cairns, house wife, qualified to be on the roll, 26th March, 1926.

This would indicate a move to Cairns in late 1925 or early 1926, depends what the qualifying period was.

1928 ditto 1927.

1929 Qld State Electoral Roll
The Electoral District of Cairns
Edward Twomey, Minnie St, Cairns, Sawyer. Annotated "Dead"
Edith Twomey, Minnie St, Cairns, house wife.
The 'Dead" annotation indicates that Edward had died but more interestingly was written in very feint hand writing what appeared to be "Diamantina (Sect 19)".  Does this mean Section 19 of the Electoral Act, probably and "Diamantina" does this refer to where he may have died, if so its a long way from Cairns.  Maybe a death certificate is needed!

1930 Qld State Electoral Roll
The Electoral District of Cairns
Edith Twomey, Minnie St, Cairns, house wife.  Annotated "Obj" which refers to an objection, in other words did not vote which means that Edith had moved out of Cairns to somewhere, she was not on the 1931 Cairns Roll.

Cairns Post, Thursday 6th June 1929, page 4.
MAGiSTRATES COURT,
M. V. Michilios v. Edith Twomey, rent due, L15 with 15/- costs.

Hi Sue,
There was a son Timothy. Of  course you knew that and you are wondering if this is indeed Edward...
Victorian BMD:
TWOMEY   Given names Timothy   Event Birth    Father's name / Spouse's family name Maurice Mother's maiden name / Spouse's given name Sarah (Bennett)   Reg. year1878   Reg. no17213
There were many " change of life babies in those days" --haphazard  birth control in those days :) :) then... :) :)

..

Hi Gerry,
Yes this family were in Cairns. Their second son Leonard Henry Twomey was born in Cairns (as per WW2 records) so they did move there in 19 24/ 25  but Edward and Edith both died in Brisbane and are buried there. Edith in Toowong and Edward at Balmoral along with Maurice James and his son Maurice James.   Edward and George's first born Edward Patrick George was either stillborn or died in his first year of life.  He is in an unmarked grave at South Brisbane General Part A QLD - Portion 2F - Inscription Id: 8290152 - Buried next to Grandmother Sarah
Bev
PS:  Unless he died in Cairns and they transported his body back to Brisbane....

Hi bevcal,

The feint hand written notation against Edward's name in the 1929 Electoral Roll in Cairns has significance.

"Diamantina (Sect 19)" I think refers to Edward being away from Cairns because he was a patient at the Diamantina Hospital in Brisbane and Section 19 part ii of the Queensland Electoral Act states in brief that 'inmates of a charitable institution shall be deemed to be on the Electoral Roll in the Electoral District before they were admitted'.

It appears that the Diamantina Hospital which I believe was a Public Charitable Institution was at that time a hospital for consumptive patients.

Hi Gerry
That would explain Edward's  death in Brisbane. They had been living in Cairns prior to his death and things would have been tough with no money coming in.  That would fit in with the rent scenario.  Poor Edith her first husband died in 1918 leaving her to rear a young family and now this.

Continuing on with search for ancestors
Still searching for Hannah Dwyer nee Levy or Levi ancestors.
I have received her son Arthur Reginald Dwyer's Birth Certificate stating he was born at Hoggs Creek, Dundee District of Glen Innes NSW  on  19 Feb 1891.
1: She was 34 and Thomas Patrick was 40 at the time of his birth.
2: Thomas and Hannah married on 22 June 1876 in Seymour Victoria.
3: Hannah was born in Sale Victoria
4: Thomas at Redfern Sydney NSW.

My dilemma is I cannot find their marriage details nor Hannah's birth details.   I am trying to locate her parent's names so I can proceed in my search to find how they came to Australia.
Can anyone suggest a way forward??

I have discovered that the Levy is connected to the Jewish religion. Many Levy's buried at Jewish Rookwood Cemetery in Sydney.
I have also found this birth record in Vic BMD which may have some bearing:
LEVI Hannah- Event Birth: Father's name: George - Mother's maiden name  Ann (Toogood) - Reg. year 1857 - Reg. no: 15717
Hannah's  death record in Qld BMD: 1945 -  C618  - Hannah Dwyer  - Joseph Levy - Thompson
Thompson or Toogood) ?? If the grandparents  died in early years the grand children may never have known them so may not remember names etc.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.. Thank you :)

Hi
I am Hannah Dwyer's  great grand daughter....
My grandfather was William Bede Dwyer born in Morven Qld.
I share your frustration....cannot find the birth certificate nor the marriage certificate.
Am also trying to track her parents - Joseph and ? Thompson....
Hannah did not speak of her family and from what I was told there was a split in her family when she married into the Dwyer family. I am guessing it might be the Jewish family /religion that caused the split.  I am yet to prove my "theory" but I think Hannah immigrated to Australia from the UK...I have found a couple of immigration records but yet to link it together. I remember Uncle Joe along with Uncle Arthur and the others..... and my Mother has memories of both Joe & Edith.  I have the records of the children/dates of birth/where they were born. They moved around a lot searching for work ....
They finally settled in Ipswich because of work with the railways.
My grandfather joined the Australian Navy and was on the first Australian Naval Ship to enter Japan...he was also in the merchant navy and went to China before it was open to the world.
I have 2 prints he brought back from Shanghai that I treasure.
Please let me know what you records you need (other than the 2 we are both looking for)

Hi Jules,
I'm Thomas and Hannahs GGGranddaughter, Teresa(nee Dwyer) and I'm quite excited to stumble upon this post. I have been searching for years to find someone who is related to my Dwyer family. I have a mountain of information regarding Thomas and Hannah. My connection to them is through their son Arnold Ernest Icely Dwyer.....
Gosh I'm completely over the moon to find you and would love to hear from you.
I can tell you this, Hannah was born in Largs, Glasgow, Scotland and was Jewish. I have quite a few gaps I would love to fill in and maybe just a thousand questions to ask if you would be so kind as to help me answer them and I would love to help you fill in any gaps you might have.
