Hi Everyone,
I have been trying for some time to find out what happened to Ann Catherine Gamble b.1844 Wirksworth (known as Catherine). She was the eldest daughter of William Gamble and Ann nee Wragg.
The last mention in censuses is 1861, where she is recorded in Wirksworth aged 16 as a 'nurse'. I believe she may have died young but can find no death record which fits.
Any help would be most appreciated.
Seasons Greetings,
WC

Have you already investigated and discounted the 1861 marriage for Catherine Gamble? Possibly a bit young to be her
-
There is a marriage on Family Search Derbyshire records -
John Bowmer, Bachelor, Clerk, son of Benjamin (mill-hand)
Ann Gamble, Spinster, daughter of William (shoemaker) Both of this parish, both of full age.
11th September 1876, St Mary's Wirksworth.
Witness' William and Elizabeth Gamble.
-
John Bowmer has a wife Ann born Wirksworth in 1853 if this is the same couple in the marriage above.
Per 1881 census oldest daughter is 3 which would fit with a marriage in 1876.
-
Have you discounted these deaths
Catherine Ann Dec 1863 Hardingstone
Catherine Dec 1870 age 30 Shardlow
She may have moved from home to be in service or similar
-
Many thanks to all,
Anne Gamble (b.1853 - 'Annie') who married John Bowmer was Catherine's younger sister.
The Hardingstone death is a (remote) possible, but I had discounted the Shardlow one on age grounds.
I'd looked at the Belper marriage in Q2 1861 (to John Smith or Samuel Street) but could not locate the couple in any subsequent censuses. As you say, Catherine would have only been 17 years old. No other marriages look sensible. They were an Anglican family so any marriage would have taken place at St Mary's in Wirksworth (unless she ran away).
I was wondering about emigration, but unlikely for a single woman?
Will keep trying.
Many thanks again,
WC

Hi K86,
That's wonderful ! Can't thank you enough.
Have found 'Kate Stroot' in Sheffield in 1871 and it's definitely Catherine. Her children (Emma, Polly, Frederick William and James William) all have family names.
Can follow the family through now. How wonderful that she survived.
Not sure how you did it, but thanks again.
Best wishes,
WC

OK - noted !
The great thing about having family from Wirksworth is John Palmer's amazing site - wirksworth.org - probably the best one-place study around.
This from the Parish Records at St Mary's ....Emma Street's christening - Aug 4th 1861.
C 1861aug04 STREET Emma elizabeth=Samuel/Ann catherine(Wirksworth)[Miner],#2120
The marriage was in Q2 so now we know why Kate was married at 17.
Can't see a marriage entry so must have happened elsewhere.
Cheers,

Hi again, I have shown above Emma Haycock Married b c 1862 Wirksworth in 1901 but unable to locate in 1891 or post 1901, but searching for Samuel Haycock b c 1861 Birmingham in 1891 gives this possible :-
Sam Haycock 29 b Birmingham
Sarah A 38 b Sheffield
Samuel T 4 b Sheffield
Sarah A 1 b Sheffield
Residing at Hollis Croft, Sheffield
Census ref RG12/3818/104/8
Again this family unit appears to disappear post 1891?
Also no children with Emma in 1901?

Hi K86,
Have done a bit more digging today :
The Parents:
1) Samuel Street b.1842 Wirksworth, d.1888 age 46 Sheffield 9c 345.
2) Ann Catherine 'Kate' Gamble/Street - cannot find a death record. May have remarried? More likely that Kate also died, as the family breaks up by 1891...
The Children:
3) Polly Street b.1869 Sheffield, d.1887 age 18 Sheffield 9c 329.
4) James William Street b.1871 Sheffield (miner) is on his own in a lodging house in Trinity St in 1891. (He was either renamed or the enumerator gave him the wrong name of Fredk Wm in 1871).
James married Martha Annie Bellamy in 1891 and they had at least 5 children - Annie, Polly,Samuel, Alice, Lily. They lived Carlisle St.
5) Emma Elizabeth Street/Haycock b.1861 Wirksworth. We have her in 1881 and 1901, but no sign in 1891 and 1911. There is a death record for Emma Haycock d.1921 age 60 Eccleshall Bierlow 9c 430, which looks sensible.
Emma and Samuel:
We never see Emma and Samuel Haycock together. They are apart in 1881, as we saw above.
Samuel is a spring knife cutter, which tallies with the Samuel Haycock in Hollis Croft in 1891, and his subsequent appearances in 1901 (boarder, Matthew St.) and 1911 (boarder Tenter St). The 'other wife' - Sarah A. Haycock (plus two children) - in 1881 is a complete mystery !
Best wishes
