I'm trying to find the birth record for my Grandfather James Alexander born 5 May 1857 to Thomas Alexander & Sarah Jane Houston. his siblings were John Houston b 1954 in Dromore, Osborne b1858 in Belfast, Flemming b1862,Ann b1864, Sarah Jane b1866, Skelton b1868, Henry b1870, Mary b1865, Francis, b1876 & Rebecca b1879. Two of the children,James & Osborne were born in Belfast? & the others in Dromore, or were they registered in Belfast & born in Dromore?

Statutory birth registration started in Ireland in 1864 so you won’t get a birth certificate for any event prior to that year. For the births pre 1864 you would normally need to rely on church records. The family appears to have been COI. There are no Dromore, Tyrone COI records prior to 1874 (earlier records were destroyed in the 1922 fire).
If the baptisms took place in Belfast it doesn’t necessarily mean the children were born there. (See the 1901 census which indicates Osborne was born in Tyrone). In most protestant denominations there was no great hurry in baptizing a child and it could often take place in a parish away from where the birth took place.

Thank you so much for the reply. It now looks like James was born in Tyrone.

I have ancestors who lived in Dromore and found many news announcements which have been transcribed. Ancestry and Find My Past have digitised many Irish newspapers. Have broken down a couple of brick walls with information sourced from these sites.
