Title: Ella George Creasy
Post by: waimaree on Saturday 12 December 15 23:05 GMT (UK)
I am having a problem finding who Ella George Creasy (born 1863) married.    I know he committed suicide (17/9/1892) in Ceylon.     Family have always said that this was over a bad marriage and that he married an Edith Rose, a year before he died.     But can find nothing to substantiate this information re Edith Rose.

Welcome to rootschat waimamree.

Can I just clarify a couple of things ....

Are you saying that a man whose name you don't know married Ella and then may have married someone by the name of Edith? Did Ella die, and if so where?

If you know 'he' died in Ceylon, and his exact date of death, how is it that you don't know his name? Do you have his death certificate (it may give more details of next of kin).

Did he marry Edith in Ceylon?

The newspaper reports of Ella George Creasy's death refer to his having been married about nine months, and having been depressed for some time.  His wife, named only in the reports as Mrs Creasy, is said to have gone out for a drive leaving him in their rooms at the Grand Oriental Hotel, Colombo, where they had been staying for two or three months.  Upon her return she found that he had shot himself with a revolver.

Here's a marriage notice:

The Times, 9 January 1892

On the 12th Dec, at St Michael's, Polwatta, by the Venerable the Archdeacon of Colombo, ELLA GEORGE, sixth son of the late SIR EDWARD CREASY, formerly Chief Justice of Ceylon, to EDITH GORDON, second daughter of the late WILLIAM ROSE, of Colombo.

My goodness - thank you all so much.      I know now the best place to come to for information about the rellies.

Ruskie - as you can see from other replies, Ella was a male.    I have wondered if the name has come from the area of Ceylon his parents moved to.    Nuevia Ellia.

avm228 - I really appreciated this information.

I am linked in to but not related to the Creasy family. Ella George Creasy born Nuwara Eliya, Ceylon, 21 April 1862 and baptized Nuwara Eliya, 26 May 1862. EGC killed himself in his room at the Grand Oriental Hotel, Colombo, Ceylon, 17 September 1892. He is the son of Sir Edward Shepherd Creasy and Lady Creasy, (Mary Maria Cottam).

EGC married Edith Gordon Rose (1871 born where ?  – died 7 June 1947, Frimley, Surrey, England). Daughter of William Henry Rose and ?.
EGC and EGR married 12 December 1891, St. Michaels, Polwatta, Ceylon.

The widow EGRC either left Ceylon on a visit to India or resided in India and married William Courtlandt Anderson on 5 September 1895, Madras, Madras, India. WCA died Cromwell Road, Kensington, London, 20 February 1935.

First son of William and Edith Cortlandt-Anderson:

Harry Frederick Cortlandt born 16 June 1896, baptised 20 July 1896 St George's Cathedral, Madras.

He died in WW1 in 1917:

They look likely also to be the parents of George Percival Gordon Cortlandt-Anderson, 1903-1965.

Thank you all

I am glad you have replied Barryd - I had wondered if you were directly related.     My husband is the great grandson of Sir Edward Creasy.   Amazing really because I actually had a relationship with my great grandfather, but Sir Ed was born in 1812!    However, he was 47 when my husbands grandfather, Frank Roland was born in 1859.    And he was 43 when his son (my husband's father) was born.
We have always been fascinated with Ella George as we have a letter he wrote when he was  at boarding school.    He seems to have been a very sensitive lad.
Sir Edward and his wife Mary were very caring in their role as parents and the children remained close when they were growing up.      However, they were sent to boarding schools and Frank Roland hated it and ran away when he was seven.
We have the memoirs of Edith (Frank's wife) and she talks of the Creasy's being a loving, close family.

Francis "Frank" Rowland Creasy was a little harder to find as he was registered  as "Male" on the Civil Registration Index in 1859. Fortunately  he was baptized at the C of E Church in Wimbledon, Surrey   2 September 1859......  as a "Female".

From my notes on Edward Shepherd Creasy:

1867: "Living in Ceylon as Chief Justice. In England Susan Townshend Hodgson, her brother Richard Baxter Townshend and sisters Katherine Townshend and Anne Townshend  took out a 99-year lease  on 12 Ridgway Place, Wimbledon for £1,900 from Sir Edward Creasy on 11 November 1867. Their mother came to live in the house having sold hers in Clifton, Bristol".

Of the 13 children of Creasy/Cottam I am missing 2. Amelia (Amy) Creasy, (1849) and Edward George Creasy (1851). Probably born St. John's Wood, London.

Now Frank Burrard Creasy, nephew of 12 of the Creasy/Cottam children and son of Edward George Creasy is another story. What a character !!!

Probably the two Hampstead entries are children of Edward Shepherd Creasy and Mary Maria Cottam.
