Hello - I am looking for information on Samuel Red, born 1785 in County Antrim. He later immigrated to Newberry, South Carolina. Some of his later ancestors were Presbyterian Ministers, so I am not sure if he was a minister in Ireland. Any assistance would be appreciated!

Could you please expand on any info. you have regarding his life, dates, marriage, family, names etc. as your info. is a bit vague :-\

Hello - sorry about being so vague. Yes, some of his later ancestors were Presbyterian ministers, in Texas. My research so far is that Samuel Red was born in County Antrim in 1785, and died 1835 in Newberry, South Carolina. He married a Mary Boyd (1797 - 1836) (marriage date unknown) and had several children - George Clark Red born 16 Dec 1820 (in Newberry, SC) died in Austin, TX 16 Aug 1881; and had a daughter Nancy King Red (born 1823); Rebecca Jane Red (born 1825) and two others born in 1827 and 1829 - all born in Newberry, SC. Hope this helps. If not, I can add more. I know very little about Mary Boyd, also - not sure if they married in South Carolina - but I am thinking so. Thanks for responding!

Thanks for the extra details but later would be descendants & earlier would be ancestors.
I have a feeling the surname of Red would be a variant of Reid to be honest though if that helps?
A few different spellings though such as Reid/Ried/Reed/Read.
Best to add as much as you know regarding family to try to establish possible parents & for potential descendants who may recognise names.

As Annie says, the surname is most likely a variation of Reid (Rid is another Ulster variation). Both Reid and Boyd are extremely common Antrim/Ulster surnames and very, very few records for such an early date will be found here. I did check in A History of Congregations of the Presbyterian church in Ireland and there's no listing for samuel having been minister of a church in Ireland. The Presbyterian Historical Society, Belfast do have the Fasti of the Presbyterian Church which contain details of ministers and he may, or may not, be listed there.

Thank you both so much for the information. I have my work cut out if in fact Samuel Red may have been Samuel Reid prior to coming over to America. I know later ancestors were Presbyterians in Texas, as they wrote some books.

It should be later descendants NOT ancestors.
Ancestors are earlier generations- father, grandfather, great-grandfather, etc.
Decendants are later generations- children, granchildren, great-grandchildren, etc.
