The best place to start would be to get his birth certificate www.Scotland's people.gov that will give you his parent's names and their  marriage You can also look for him in the 1911 Census

Was he in the army ??

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

A check on the free index on Scotlands People confirms there is only one entry in 1903 for that name

Hi Annie,

Are you saying your father was illegitimate?

You need your father's birth cert. to find out if his father was named even if his parents were not married.

If this is the case, your father should be registered on SP by both surnames...his mother's maiden name & his fathers surname.

Hi

You will need to register with Scotlands People and buy some credits.  This will enable you to download a copy of the 1903 birth cert

Hi Annie as suggested you will need to get a copy of his birth certificate before you can go any further with this ...To see who his parent's were www.scotlandspeople.gov if you have not used this site before it will cost you £7.00 for 30 credits ..A birth search will cost you 1 credit and 5 to download the image as Carole said leaving you credit's to search for him in the 1911 census

Hi Annie,

Alfred b 18 Apr 1903
39 Kirk St, Peterhead
Parents; Charles Alexander (Cooper) & Mary Lovie
Married 20 Sep 1883, Peterhead

The time between the marriage & Alfred's birth would suggest a large family?
A look at the 1901 census would be interesting.

Alfred looks to have died 1986 although outside Aberdeen areas.

That's a good census.......even has g g/mother.

It's great when you find those.

George is 10 in 1891 so was born before the 1883 marriage

Maybe a previous marriage?

It would be interesting to find Alfred in 1939 as that would give a better insight of him as he wouldn't have an occupation in 1911 although worth looking at that too.

This is overwhelming I am so grateful to all of you for helping me and sending this information. I intend to find Mr Alfred Alexander of Peterhead, my grandfather I want to know everything about him. My father and his sister they are wanting to know who their real Father was. I read in one reply that he might have died in 1986 and he lived outside Aberdeenshire how do you know this?
This is very interesting if you know anymore.

how do you know this?

By using Scotlands People.  Searching for a death for him would match his birthyear but was not found using Aberdeen as a place of death

My grandmother told me he lived in Edinburgh and he was maybe a doctor or eye specialist, I was a young girl and I questioned her why our surnames were different?
It is over 40 years that she tried to tell me something about what had happened in her young days.

If he did die in 1986 - you will have to apply for a copy of his death cert as it is too late a death to be available for download

Annie,

This ties in perfectly with the death for 1986 as this Alfred died District of George Square, Edinburgh City.

This too would need to be ordered but all can be ordered via the site as long as you have enough credits to cover.

Someone may be kind enough & look up the directories as his name is likely to appear there.

After you establish if this is him, someone may be able to find a MI for him too.

Annie

ADDED.......Being of a profession there is likely to be an obituary which someone may find.

Annie,

Once you have a death cert........there are 3 marriages for name Alfred Alexander 1923 - 1943 Edinburgh City.

If he was married his wife's name should be on the cert. along with her maiden name providing the informant know those details.

I do not know if he was in the army, I have used credits at Scotlands people.gov but the death certificate was not of great grandfather.
Where can I look to see what happens to the family after 1911. My grandfather was only 7 in 1911.
I would like to find him he was in the Peterhead area as my father was born on 1934 and then his sister in 1935 my grandfather would have been 32 years old.
I tried to see if he was married but no record in Peterhead. What did he do for a living and where was he living my grandmother worked as a maid.
Thanks for the information on his brother Harry who was killed in France when he was 18 years old. Harry was my Dads Uncle.
Many Thanks for all your replys your are awesome
Annie

As there is no name on the birth certificate you don't have much information to go on only the information passed on from your Grandmother ..If he did become a doctor or a Eye specialist I would assume he would have been at University Aberdeen or Edinburgh ..Did you manage to get a copy of his birth ?

Annie, well spotted, hadn't noticed the surname for Barbara Ann in that 1911 marriage ref. She could well have been previously married. If you check the original image on SP, this will give you confirmation as to whether Barbara showed as a spinster or a widow  :)

At least, you have her parents' names from that which will help you confirm details further.
