Can anyone help me re George Coleman my great grandfather.
He married my great grandmother Sophia humans in dec 1849.
My grandmother Sarah jane was born 1854 showing George Coleman father
However Sophia remarried in 1855 saying she is a spinster
How do I research George Coleman
s common name and a miner
Any suggestions

Does Sarah's 1854 birth cert say her mother was Sophia Coleman nee Humans?
-
You haven't given any indication of where they lived/married/places of birth etc.
Is this George and Sophia on 1851?
19 Robert Street, Hoxton
George Coleman 29 painter bn Norfolk
Sophia 26 bn Bunwell Norfolk
Ellen 4 bn Bunwell Norfolk
modified to add - guess this is NOT them, as this couple are still together in 1861/71

Can't see a marriage in 1849 for George Coleman/Sophia Humans.
However there is a marriage of a George Coleman -
q4 1849, Aston
Vol 16 Page 409
On the same page is a Sophia Davis.

There is a birth for a Sarah Jane Coleman in 1854, Aston, which ties in with area of the above marriage.
If the marriage is correct it would be advisable to purchase the marriage cert to enable you to progress further as hopefully George's father's details will be recorded on the marriage cert.

I wonder is lane Davies in 1851 is in fact daughter of sophia
-
What makes you think that?
Sarah Jane wasn't born till 1854.

Looking again at that 1851 census, I'm wondering if the lodger, James Humings, is actually our James Homans ..........
It seems, from what we have seen, that maybe (and this is only a possibility) that the marriage to Coleman broke down. Sophia returns to parents, has affair with lodger. Eventually marries him.
Either George Coleman dies, or marriage is annulled for some reason, divorce is unlikely though possible, or second marriage is bigamous.
Another less dramatis scenario is that Sophia is just temporarily with her parents at the time of 1851 census, George being off mining somewhere, they have child Sarah a few years later. George then dies, (or marriage annulled/divorce etc) Sophia remarries to her parents lodger, but for some reason calls herself a spinster - she is illiterate so would not have read what the vicar wrote on the marriage cert. However, James Homans and the Davis witnesses weren't, so if they were aware that the details were incorrect they should have said!
What is the exact wording on Sarah Janes birth cert about her parents?

Thanks for PM
Best to put the info on the thread here, so all can see.
So the birth cert says mother is Sophia Coleman formerly Davis
Seems Sophia still considers herself married to George at this point.
Indeed, they could well still be together, Sarah a child of the marriage, maybe nothing untoward at this point.

Sarah birth certificate says father George Coleman. Excavator
Mother Sophia Coleman formerly Davis
They are living in Aston deritend Warwickshire
1849 marriage is George Coleman aged 26 father Thomas a labourer living in duddeston and Sophia Davis aged 20
1855 marriage Sophia Davis aged 25 spinster
1861 census
Lane Davis is2months old
6years gap in children for William and Ann
Could be Sophia daughter. She would have been married 1year

Sophia is recorded as Coleman. This "Lane" (Jane?) is a Davis. There is no reason to doubt that she isn't a sister of Sophia. Unless something comes up to make you doubt this, I wouldn't look for irregularities - there are enough mysteries here without bringing in more!
Sarah is registered as a child of the marriage (to Coleman). Whether he is her biological father or not you will never know, unless you go down some sort of DNA route, any more than anyone knows if any child born within any marriage is actually the husbands child.
What is the mystery is why, when she marries Homans, she said she was a spinster. Especially when the witnesses were clearly Davis rellies, who knew all about her marriage to Coleman (as she is with them as a married Mrs Coleman on 1851), so it is not as if she was pretending she had never been married before and hoping to get away with it because no one knew.
IF the James Humings on 1851 (lodger) is our Mr Homans, then I notice he too says he is married on 1851!
