Hi,
I'm new here. I am trying to research Melisina Bateman born circa 1850, who married William Turner on 17/1/1867 in Ballinderry, Londonderry, Ireland. The marriage certificate has her father as Michal Bateman.
I don't have Melisina's date of birth, her mother or any siblings. The census 1901 has her place of birth as co Waterford (which I am assuming is in Northern Ireland)
Hopefully someone on roots chat has the same family and have more details?
-
Can you post the link to the Census?

Can you post the link to the Census?

-
The 1867 marriage took place in Tamlaght O'Crilly Upper Church of Ireland, notwithstanding that Melesina was noted as a minor, her occupation was recorded as teacher, she was living at the time in "Killygullib" (Glebe, the townland?), and her father Michael Bateman was described as a farmer.
BTW, County Waterford is nowhere near the marriage and 1901 / 1911 census locations, it is in (today) the Republic of Ireland, not Northern Ireland, it depends where specifically in County Waterford, but you are probably talking a couple of hundred miles distance.

From PRONI Will Calendars Index:
Probate of the Will of William Turner late of Swatragh, County Londonderry, Farmer, who died 3 December 1906 granted at Londonderry 10 November 1921 to Clara Jane Martin, Married Woman, the daughter. Effects £91 5s.

Griffiths Valuation has 3 Waterford Bateman entries of which there are 2 references to Michael Batemans in the townlands of:
- Ballynagaulemore (Ballynagaul More), in the civil parish of Ringagonagh;
- Helvick, also in the civil parish of Ringagonagh.
Print date for that area was 1851 (on the money for Mel(l)isina's birth):
http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=nameSearch
And the 1901 census shows a family still in the Helvick area, I wonder if related:

BTW, just wondering Irish Finder, what relation is Mel(l)isina to you and what other family information do you have ? (ie. to avoid any nugatory effort) :)

Probably not much help in tracing the family- McCausland and Redmond both names from local gentry in Garvagh (just north of Swatragh).

What details are listed for the father of William Turner (name and occupation)? This may fit into a story I was told about a Turner family.

A Melisina Turner married (Jan./Mar.1916 Glenties) Andrew Elliott.

Could someone please look up a marriage of Michael Bateman in 'Kinsale' Ireland in 1849. I'm not sure if this is Melisina's father Michael. I found this on Irish Genealogy.ie. Melesina was born in 1850. The 1911 census she wrote Waterford as her place of birth. On her marriage certificate it only lists her father.
Also on same, is a death of Michael Bateman in 1870 in cork.
I have researched and found that the Bateman's arrived in Waterford from Cork. None the less, i cannot find a birth certificate for Melesina in Cork or Waterford.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated

I am after a date when Honora Turner (born 1/9/1889 Swatragh) went to USA.
Family said that she lived in Philedelphia with a son Bill Gemmell.
I note that her sister, Melisina Bennet Turner (born 14/01/1885 Swatragh) married Andrew Elliott 19/1/1916 Glenties, Donegal, and had one son William John Gemmil Elliott 10/1/1917. I not Andrew Elliott was killed in the war in France 7/3/1917. Millie Elliott died 1920 in Glenties, leaving behind a 3yr old son.
I wonder IF the son is Bill Gemmell who was in Phildelphia with Norah? If anyone knows when Norah went to the states that would be greatly appreciated. This would list any travellers with her. ??? ???
-
Hello,
I wonder if this is her?
1930 says she emigrated in 1919 - from Canada, I think that means.

1920 Norah E Gemmell with husband Robert and son Bill - she emigrated in 1911 on this one

No sign of William John Gemmell Elliott with his aunt in 1940 either so it looks like he didn't go to stay with her. I can't find him anywhere else in the censuses in the US. I've checked deaths in GRONI and familysearch with no luck.
You might find something here http://sortedbyname.com/mobile/pages/e111615.html

Can anyone find a 'marriage' of Honorah Turner born 9/7/1889 Northern Ireland to Robert C Gemmell?
??? ??? ??? ;D ;D ;D
-
Where have you checked?
If I recall, the dates of immigration for Honora and Robert were different. As the child was born in Canada, they may have married there.
-
I have checked on the freely accessible Family Search, i have Searched on the paid sites M/H & A.... Perhaps i'm missing something being too specific.
-
Can anyone find a 'marriage' of Honorah Turner born 9/7/1889 Northern Ireland to Robert C Gemmell?
It's quite possible the marriage record will not be online. Son William born Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and they were still living there at time of 1916 census.
Added- 1919 border crossing gives Nora's Canadian contact as mother-in-law Mrs. Jean Gemmell at an address in Edmonton. Same address here so looks like William Howard Gemmell was Robert's brother (and Nora's son William H. possibly named after him)-

-
Thank you Aghadowey for your wonderful prowess again ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
There's no point asking for help by PM as others will not see the new information you found.
The 1916 marriage should list the residences of both bride and groom as well as occupations and names of both witnesses.
The 1920 death certificate for 'Millie Elliott' should list residence, marital status, cause of death, informant.
There is a Glenties death for an Andrew Elliott in 4th quarter 1919 age 33- occupation, marital status and residence will be listed and if this is Melisina's husband then she might be listed as informant.

Please tell us ALL the details you have at the start rather than later mentioning bits that make a difference to the searches we do trying to help you.
Since you probably don't know the Philadelphia area-
In 1920 Bill & Norah Gemmill & son were living at 321 North Narberth Ave., Lower Merrion, Montgomery Co. (slightly northwest of Philly)
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MFYV-PKK
Honor B. Gemmell who died 1980 is buried in West Laurel Hill Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd, Montgomery Co.
Both places are in Lower Merrion Township and only about 2 miles apart. Collingwood, N.J. is only about 15 miles from the cemetery.
Not all records are on Find A Grave so I suggest you contact the cemetery to ask what details they have for Honor B. Gemmell and anyone else buried in the same plot. Also ask if Robert C. Gemmell/Gemmil's there.

Thank you Family Routes and Aghadowey.
Im thinking too that Robert C Gemmell remarried, however the gentleman you kindly found is Robert Howard Gardner Gemmell. I need to get (probably cant get) a marriage certificate of Norah Turner to Robert Gemmell. I have emailed the grave where Robert's wife and son are buried. Also is it strange that on the census, if your husband is remarried, that you would put 'married' on the 1930 + 1940 census? (Robert was only with Norah and son in the 1920 census). Robert Howard Gardner Gemmell when married on 22 May 1937 said marital status 'single. He married in Canada, i wonder if that is where he married Norah?. Surely they can check to see in those days if he was already married? Im confused, is it the same man?
Aghadowey, you are correct that Lonia is a nickname for Sophronia.
-
If Robert Gemmell was still alive in 1930 & 1940 it could be that he and Nora went their separate ways after 1920 census. Since Nora was 'Mrs Gemmell' and had her son in the household it wouldn't be unusually to see her listed as married (as indeed she might have been if there was no divorce). However, all that is really speculation.
How would 'they' have checked his marital status in Canada? Each Province keeps their own records and since they lived in Alberta earlier it's possible the marriage took place in the Edmonton area.
-
GOT HIM.... typing lots up so keep checking :)
To backtrack a bit... Stephen Howard Gemmell died 25 May 1911 at Coatbridge and wife was Jane Gardner. According to 1901 census they had: Helen J. (18), Agnes H. (16), Jane G. (13), Robert H.G. (11), John G. (8 ), William H.F.G. (5), Margaret H.F. (1).
20 April 1919 "Maraval" arrived New York from Demerara, Guyana
Robert Howard G. Gemmell, age 29y 1 mo, married, born Coatbridge Scotland, contact in county he'd come from- Mrs. S.H. Gemmell 11211 126th St. Edmonton Canada, going to- wife Mrs. Norah B. Gemmell 1609 Finance Bldg [Philadelphia] Pa [possibly his business address], 5'6" fair complexion brown hair blue eyes.
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J677-W29
This proves that Norah's husband was Robert Howard Gardner Gemmell (think the Robert C. Gemmell you had should have been Robert G. Gemmell).
WWI Draft Registration card (2 Sept.1916)- Robert Howard Gardner Gemmell
born 17 Feb.1888, alien, address- 10734 126th St. Edmonton Canada
chartered accountant, employer- Barro_ Wade Guthrie & Co. at Finance Bldg Philadelphia
nearest relative- Mrs Nora B Gemmell at Edmonton address.
"Is classified in Class 2 Canadian Military"
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KXB6-8VT (birthdate mistranscribed so view scanned image)
The above all ties into the Philadelphia address on manifest and Edmonton connection
Think there's a bit more to come...
Bit more in next post :)
-
Aghadowey you are incredible and so gifted!!
This is really interesting. It would appear their child was illegitimate?
So 'going to be wife' 20/04/1919, they arrived on the ship together i assume?. Why would he say he was 'married' ? The ship, Maraval, they arrived in New York on. Is there anything to say they boarded from Scotland or Ireland?
This is amazing information. And now we can say that he re-married as his age marrying Nancy Sophronia Kennedy matches . Also the name is very unique, unlikely to have someone else with the same name, age and place of birth.
Strange they never had more than one child as both came from large families
For the times, the above surely would be frowned on? :o :o ;D ;D ;D
-
Hi Family Routes, i wonder IF the Ann (Nancy) Elliott you found, who married Norah Gemmell (Nee Turner) brother in law, John Gardner Gemmeill was related to Andrew Elliott who married Norah Turner's sister, Melisina Turner.
The reason i possibly think this is because Melicina (called herself Millie later) and Andrew Elliott's son was called, William John GEMMILL Elliott. (Perhaps a spelling mistake in Gemmill - meant to be Gemmell).
This would tie back to a previous post i did thinking there was a connection. If there is, it would surely have to be Ann Elliott? Now to prove ??? ??? ??? ???
-
Still putting more together but what child do you think was illegitimate?
Norah might have had miscarriages, stillbirths or lost child(ren) in infancy with just one child (William) surviving.
So 'going to be wife' 20/04/1919, they arrived on the ship together i assume?.
No. RHGG was travelling alone (most likely on business) and his wife Norah was in Philadelphia (presumably with young William).
Why would he say he was 'married' ?
Because he was married to Norah.
The ship, Maraval, they arrived in New York on. Is there anything to say they boarded from Scotland or Ireland?
The ship came from Demerara, Guyana. (I did state all this in the earlier post)

Yes, I assumed that Ann (Nancy) Elliott was probably related in some way to Andrew...(though you shouldn't really assume anything!!)
We know that Robert went to stay with his wife in 1919 and was still there in 1920 but he may have left soon after that and hence no more children.

Thank you so very much Aghadowey for putting the pieces of the puzzle only you can find, together!!
Thank you also Family Routes for the connection - Elliott and Gemmell. Need to prove this, but it appears to be the case :o ???
I wonder if the son Bill and his wife Barbara had any children, as they may still be alive. Will start to look further into this ??? ??? That would be really invaluable if they were or they had children who are ;D ;D

How old is the address you have for son Bill Gemmell? if his wife (2nd?) was Ann then perhaps she stayed there after he died.

Hi Aghadowey,
I am so very appreciative of your wonderful research prowess ;D ;D ;D ;D
The ONLY address i have now been able to get, is a hand written note from two generations ago saying that Aunt Norah Gemmell was dead, a writer for a magazine. Her son Bill and Ann his wife, lived in Collingwood, New Jersey.
So now with the deaths, this note has to be prior to 1979. Your last post had the 'actual' address at 106 Whitman Ave, Collingsworth, New Jersey. That ties up with this latest information. I was always looking at Pennsylvania as that is where i was told they lived.
CHILDREN OF BILL GEMMELL - William Howard Gemmell
I cannot find any children for either wife - Barbara or Ann. Can i correctly end that line of the tree as a dead end/died out? I hope I'm not missing anything. ??? ??? ??? ??? ;D ;D ;D ;D

TEACHERS COLLEGE IRELAND
How do i go about finding information (can i get any information?) on who was at the Teachers Training College 1860-1866? I have been told to research as that could explain HOW Melicina Bennet Bateman met William Turner (if they were there at the same time) and her then move to Northern Ireland to teach.
I have been told that you couldn't teach UNLESS you went to the above. I am not certain if this is true for their era but i am trying to put it all together.

M'Keown is not related, she is named after teacher (in my family) who taught at the school her (M'Keown) father was a headmaster at. I managed to get in contact with the family.
Given the age difference of William Turner and Melicina Bateman, it is more plausible that they met teaching in northern Ireland as on their marriage certificate, they were living near each- other.
