Hi, I have a marriage certificate for Duncan McLeod and Lucy Allen. I have been unable to find any information about Lucy before her marriage.
I was hoping someone may be able to help.
The information on the certificate is as follows;
Married on 24th September 1904 in the Parish Church of Southend, Essex.
Duncan McLeod 30 Bachelor, Clerk
Address 2 York Gardens
Father Duncan McLeod, Engineer
Lucy Allen 30 Spinster, Nursing Sister
Address 23 Tykis Avenue, Southend
Father John Henry Allen, Boat Owner
I would appreciate any help or advice.
Thanks
Michelle

Hi. Have you found the McLeods in the 1911 census to get Lucy's birthplace?
-
one family worth a closer look.In the 1871 census,,,,Lucys Father,,John,, is a Waterman? And as you can see in the 1881 census here,,,her brother John Henry is a mate of a barge.
1881 England, Wales & Scotland Census
25, Cross Street, Erith, Dartford, Kent, England
Jane Allen Head Widow Female 43 1838 Mangler Strood, Kent, England
John H Allen Son Single Male 16 1865 Mate Of Barge Erith, Kent, England
Lucy Allen Daughter Single Female 6 1875 Scholar Erith, Kent, England
Henry J Allen Son Single Male 5 1876 Scholar Erith, Kent, England
Mary Ann Allen Daughter Single Female 3 1878 - Erith, Kent, England
-
there is a marriage of a John Henry Allen to a Jane Fanny George in 1860 in Swanscombe.
-
By 1891,,this Lucy Allen is a servant in the Lloyd household in Wandsworth,London. So if shes yours,,,shes heading in the right direction. :)
-
in 1901 she is now in the Orme household in Lewisham...she is now a NURSE.
So...its looking good that she is the one described as born in 1874 Erith,Kent in the census.....and as b 1874 Kent,,registered Dartford on the birth indexes.

Father, John Henry Allen death Jun.qtr.1880 Dartford.

It appears Duncan and Lucy emigrated to the US in 1908 - their first child was born Duncan Allen McLeod in Sept.qtr.1907 Romford.
On 10/6/1934 Lucy McLeod arrived in England from New York - her address in England was to be 9 Park Crescent, Erith, Kent - she returned to the US on 6/9/1934.
Think that kind of knits it altogether, that Lucy Allen is indeed the one born in Erith, Kent, dau. of John Henry Allen (born in Gravesend) and Jane Fanny George married in 1860 and that she was named after her paternal grandmother.
In 1851 John H Allen is living with his widowed mother Lucy plus 3 siblings in Milton next Gravesend. In 1841 William Allen 40 Sawyer, Lucy 30, Elizabeth 10, William 8, John 4 and Ann 11mos.
John Henry Allen b.6/1/1837, bp.5/2/1837 St. George, Gravesend, Kent, son of William and Lucy (per familysearch).
