Title: Culhane
Post by: johnnyjumpup on Thursday 14 January 16 23:04 GMT (UK)
Hi All,
I am trying to trace a marriage for Eliza Doyle and John Culhane circa 1880-1890. Eliza was from Co. Wexford. I think they may have been married in England as I cannot find any trace of a marriage in Waterford. They had a son William born in 1889 in Hampstead.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thank you so much Carole W and Claire, I think you are probably correct that the marriage you mention is the couple I am looking for. If I was to get the marriage cert what information would it record.? I know here in Ireland it records the names and addresses of the father of the bride and groom but does not mention mothers. it also records the two witnesses. Does it record the place of birth of both parties or just the addresses at the time of marriage.

I really appreciate all your help It has really made by day as I had hit that infamous brick wall!!

Hi All
I decided to order the marriage cert for Eliza Doyle and John Colhane as follows taking info from a very kind reply to my earlier query

"I Think it may be the one Sept. Qtr 1882 Kensington
John COLHANE
Eliza DOYLE
ELWON Thomas Henry V
PASCO Annie"

EDIT: Kensington Vol. 1a    Page. 342"

However I looked at www.familysearch.org indexes to marriages just to check if I had page and volume numbers correct before I applied. I couldn't find this particular entry. I found the following indexes
Name     John Colhane
 Event Type     Marriage
 Registration Quarter     Jul-Aug-Sep
 Registration Year     1882
 Registration District     Kensington
 County     London
 Event Place     Kensington, London, England
 Volume     1A
 Page     342
 Line Number     339

John Colhane probably married one of the following people
  Name Annie Maude I Pasco
It doesn't mention Eliza Doyle as a possible spouse. Then I searched for Eliza Doyle and found this record:
Name     Eliza Doyle
 Event Type     Marriage
 Registration Quarter     Jul-Aug-Sep
 Registration Year     1882
 Registration District     Kensington
 County     London
 Event Place     Kensington, London, England
 Volume     1A
 Page     21
 Line Number     17

Eliza Doyle probably married one of the following people
  Name Joel Cross
 Name Claudine Mary A Fearon
 Name Henry Snelson A Fuller
 Name Beatrice Betty L Giles
The quarter, year and district are the same but the volume and page numbers are different. How can I be sure that John and Eliza Doyle married each other
I would greatly appreciate any help with this as I am not very familiar with the indexes.
Thank you once again for all the help already received

Using freebmd - if you input John Colhane with spouse surname Doyle - there is only one match.

Marriages September qtr 1882
John Colhane  Kensington    1a   342 - Eliza Doyle on same page

The other Eliza Doyle entry you quote - the reference 1A 21 does not cross match to an entry for Colhane/Culhane

If you check the full GRO image for that qtr - there is only one entry for a John Colhane and that ref is  Kensington 1A 342

Hi Carole W,
Thank you so much.
I have never used "freebdm" before. It's great, Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I am definitely going to apply for the Marriage Cert tonight because I think you are spot on it has to be the right couple. It should show Eliza's father's name so I am really hopeful it will link me back to Ireland and a Baptism Cert.

All your help is greatly appreciated
