I have a obit from papers past that states that Capt Walter Spencer Stanhope died in 1908 in Auckland, it gives no other details other than he had been in Auckland about 10 years and had originally settled on Little Barrier Island. I would love to find out where he is buried and any other information. Any help or pointers would be appreciated

The "Newcastle Daily Journal,Friday January 4th 1861" has a birth notice
"At 51 Harley Street,London on the 31st ult.,the wife of
Walter Spencer Stanhope ,Esq,.of Cannon Hall, Yorkshire,
of a son and heir.
Above birth notice is that of the child John (John Montague Spencer) STANHOPE - b. 31 December 1860.
He appears - aged 3 months - on the 1861 census at Cannon Hall, Cawthorne, Yorkshire, with his paternal grandparents / his parents (Walter T.W. and Elizabeth J.S. ... and sister Mary G. aged 3. Both children said to be born in London.)
Walter Spencer STANHOPE (s/o Walter T.W. and Elizabeth J.) was born in the last quarter of 1861.
Details of baptism follow:

Baptism - Cawthorne, All Saints - Yorkshire
Year - 1861
# 763
Christmas Day [25 December]
SPENCER-STANHOPE* - Walter
S/o Walter Thomas William and Elizabeth Julia
Father's occupation: Gentleman
Address : Cannon Hall
[* Note: The Baptism record is written with the hyphenated surname of SPENCER-STANHOPE. ]
Sometimes on these baptism/christening records, the (actual) date of birth is added in the margin.
Not the case though with baby Walter. Given that "17 November 1861" is recorded as his birthdate on the Purewa, Auckland, cemetery transcription ... and also on a military service record, it seems likely to be correct.

Hi Gillian
Unsure as to what information on Captain Walter Spencer STANHOPE, you already have ??
There is though a lot available using a google search ... so won't repeat it here, except for that which is possibly relevant to his travel to, (and time spent), in New Zealand.
Extracted information from Charterhouse Register (forgotten books) via google search.

Hi Gillian
It does seem that Walter Spencer STANHOPE (then a Lieutenant), firstly made a journey to New Zealand in 1888 per the ship "Coptic", in the company of Dr. H. (Herbert Timbrell) BULSTRODE.
[See mention of this in Reply # 8 / Reply # 12. ]
The newspaper article "Auckland Star" (NZ) - 24 August 1888, stated STANHOPE was "travelling" for his health" and this possibly related to the serious injury he had suffered in October 1887.
The "Sheffield Evening Telegraph" (ENG) - 14 October 1887 reported Mr Walter STANHOPE, son of Colonel STANHOPE, C.B. of Cannon Hall, Barnsley, who was out shooting in Norfolk, was shot in the face and his son would permanently lose sight in one eye. STANHOPE snr. had gone to Norfolk to be with his son.
Although I couldn't find (conclusive) details of their travel back to the UK from NZ, both Lieut. STANHOPE and Dr. BULSTRODE, both appeared in the 1891 UK census (with the Dr. marrying in October of that year.)
Of interest though, is another passenger who also made the 1888 "Coptic" voyage.

"Coptic" - voyage to NZ, 1888
Also sharing the "first saloon" accommodation on this voyage, with Lt. STANHOPE and the Doctor, (though contracted to disembark at Auckland), was a "Mr. R.H. SHAKESPEAR".
And, R.H. (Robert Henry Anson) SHAKESPEAR, was the co-owner with Captain W.S. STANHOPE, of the yacht, "Ilex".
[This following bit is my guesswork ;) : Travelling with R.H. SHAKESPEAR, was a "Mrs W. R. SHAKESPEAR", whom I believe was "Frances (a.k.a. Fanny) Isabella SHAKESPEAR, his long-time- widowed mother.
R.H. SHAKESPEAR had already lived in New Zealand for at least 10 years, having married Blanche SMITH here in 1878, but it would seem he returned to UK briefly for the purpose of bringing his mother to NZ ?? R.H.S. was born in India 1856 - his father William Ross SHAKESPEAR served in the 3rd Regt. - died in 1861-62 shortly after the birth of another son William Frederick who came to NZ many years later.]
A Google search will bring up much (NZ) information re: R.H. SHAKESPEAR. A newspaper report of January 1897 ("Grey River Argus") records that "Mr R.H. SHAKESPEAR of Whangaparoa, was selected for the position of Caretaker, of Little Barrier Island."
http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz
In one tale of R.H. SHAKESPEAR, it was said that he and his immediate family were the only inhabitants of Little Barrier Island ... though it would now appear that Capt. STANHOPE also resided there for a time.

Some conflicting reports in NZ newspapers about just how long Capt. STANHOPE had lived in the country ... 10 years ??? or ... "a few years". [Can't see him on electoral rolls at all ?]
I believe that he didn't return to New Zealand until 1901 ... and that he came here, via Australia.
This is very likely him on a voyage to Australia.
S.S. AUSTRALASIA - bound for Sydney, via Melbourne. Departed London - 20 February 1901.
Arrival date: 27 March 1901 (Sydney/ Melbourne ??)
Saloon Passenger
Capt. Spence [sic] STANHOPE - aged 40 years [bc 1861] - single
Embarked : either London or Plymouth
~ Lu
-
.... and - although the age and year of birth are somewhat at odds - this would seem to be the onward journey to New Zealand (a few weeks later), for Captain STANHOPE ??
Ship: "Mararoa" - from Sydney to NZ
Saloon Passenger
Captain W. STANHOPE - age 44 years [bc 1857]
Contracted to land at Auckland, NZ
Embarked at Sydney, Australia
Departed : 22 April 1901
