Title: You'd think a name like Iorweth would be easy to find.
Post by: hunkyhywel on Sunday 17 January 16 15:42 GMT (UK)
I'm looking for Iorweth Roberts in 1911 census, can anyone help? Struggling to find his family.

He was married in 1929 to Rosina, registered in Pontypridd but a daughter was born in Ferndale, Rhondda in 1933.
He had a brother William and a sister Lilian
His parents were Edward and Elizabeth

That's all I know I'm afraid, can anyone find him or his parents in 1911?

Maybe nonsense but is the original a capital I. or a lowercase l

1939 index gives his year of birth as 1901

I am still none the wiser Mazi as to whether its an I or L as I searched with variants and Rosina in house It came up as Iorwerth when I copied and pasted though even though it looks like a small l on the web site

A name like Iorwerth is easy to mistranscribe!

Think this is him on 1911

(and it's a capital i)

Edward Roberts    35 - b Cardigan. Coal hewer below ground
Elizabeth O Roberts    30 - b Cardigan
Lilian May Roberts    6 - b Ferndale

I'd agree with Mabel. In my experience looking for Welsh names starting with an "I" you also need to consider a "J" as this is how Iorwerth has probably been incorrectly transcribed in 1911 census. Also common for such things as IOAN to be transcribed as JOAN.

Probably not - one story is from Barmouth and the other from Machynlleth, nowhere near the Rhondda Fach.
