Hi All,
Help needed please RE Jannet Heggan appears on 1861 Scottish census as niece born 1844 Stranraer she is with William Radie miss transcribed should be ( Roddick ) b 1787 Ireland I would love to find out how she is connected Williams wife is deceased but her name was Jane/Janet Craig . I can only find one Jane Heggan b 1844 on Familysearch which could fit the bill but again I need help. She is married to Robert Bell showing birth of daughter Leslie R Bell 1888 New Jersey looks like immigrated 1867 possible naturalisation that year first child Agnes Bell born scotland 1864 I have searched for marriage in Scotland 1864 but I cannot find anything as this would give me parents names. Also searched for her birth. Any help most appreciated.

Irret, been such a long time :-* Good to see that you are still following through on William Walker and family!
Have you still got access to the US material? 1900 shows Jane as being born in Ireland to Irish parents. Given all the connections to Ireland for the Roddicks, not surpring really...
Robert Bell and Jane show as having married on this census in 1867. Can't see Agnes in this, was she in 1880?
1900:
Robert Bell 55 b. Scotland, Farmer
Jane Bell 53 b. Ireland
Alexander J Bell 29 b. Pennsylvania
Irene J Bell 15 b. Pennsylvania
Leslie Bell 11 b. Winslow, Camden, New Jersey

Hi Monica, Yes he is still tormenting me. No I don't have US access but Family search show 1880/1890 as born Scotland but I do agree with you the Irish connection is there, wondered if William Roddick had a sister who married a Heggan? Or she may not be a niece as William wasn't a nephew. Margaret wasn't at home in 1851 so when William appeared on the scene it was probably easier to say he was a nephew of course the connection could be with Jane/Jannet Craig.
Hope you are all well x

The birth of Leslie R Bell could this be Leslie (Roddick) Bell 1888 New Jersey mother Jane Heggan born Scotland

Jane and Janet were not really interchangeable names in Scotland. At that time nephew and niece were still sometimes used in their older sense of grandson and granddaughter. If you found the 1864 birth certificate, it would tell you when and where the parents married.
