Title: Margaret Foxton fresh eyes needed
Post by: LisaRobinson87 on Thursday 21 January 16 16:39 GMT (UK)
I need some help after receiving some notes off a family member on some of my brick walls.

Margaret Foxton Born Stokesley  1871
1871 with family
1881 with family
1891 servant

Now the notes i got off a family member who researched the family years ago sent me possible marriages which i have found.

Margaret Foxton marriage to a  Joseph Armstrong 1897 Middlesbrough

Family member thinks Joseph dies but as of yet i haven't been able to find a death or a place and year birth for Joseph

Margaret Armstrong marriage to a Laurence Mackin 1902 Middlesbrough

In 1911 i have her on census with her husband and it states married 9 years

Children
Robert Henry Evans age 14
Margaret Lilian Armstrong age 11
Charlotte Mackin age 8
Stephen Mackin age 3
Joseph Mackin age 12 months

I have a death for Margaret Mackin in 1945 in Middlesbrough but what i can't seem to find is the info where she is with Joseph Armstrong i obviously have the marriage and i've been able to find all the births of the children on freebmd but no censuses info? And where did Robert Henry Evans come from i have no marriage for her to a Evans is it possible she had him out of wedlock but still could name him after the father? Any help would be appreciated this Foxton family has my head in a spin!!

What was her fathers name/occupation - does this correspond with the marriages?

Free index brings up a Magge Mackin in Middlesbrough who may get you to the record.

This is how they are named on the 1911

Seward Mackin   44 Ireland
Magge Mackin   40 Stokesley
Charlotte Armstrong   8 All children born Middlesbrough
Speven Mackin   3
Locrp Machin   1
Asbert Henry Evans   14
Magge Liyn Armstrong 11

The fathers name was William Foxton and he's often down as a Hawker i haven't seen the marriage certs.

There is a 1901 census that looks good for Margaret but she is down as Mary and so is her daughter but there is a son Robert and then Visitor's Esther & James Smith with child Annie.

Margaret does have a sister Esther and i haven't been able to find much on her yet but the info on the census does tie in for her, her husband and child both have Scotland as birth places so maybe that's why i haven't found anything on Esther

Can you give us a census reference for this 1901, or enough detail (e.g. "Mary's" surname, birthplace, age, location) to find it?

Yes I agree that looks likely to be her - indeed it may in fact say Marg rather than Mary.

Still married rather than widowed.

So Robert Henry Evans (birth reg 1896, "Armstrong" in 1901) predates the marriage to Mr Armstrong...

Hi

Robert Henry Evans age 14

Her birth surname was Foxton, she married an Armstrong then a Mackin - so where does a son surname Evans fit in?

Births June qtr 1896
Robert Henry Evans        Middlesbro'    9d   575

Yes, his birth certificate would be interesting if it named the father.  Perhaps she cohabited with a Mr Evans but didn't marry him?

She was a servant in 1891 in Guisborough there is no Evans in the household at that time, i still can't find out what happened to Joseph but in 1901 she is classed as married rather then a widow so it would only give a short period of time before she got married again for his death.

Perhaps Robert came to the family via Laurence.  Maybe Laurence had been married before to a person who had this child, (either from a previous marriage, or illegitimate) and so he is Laurences step son.   Then Roberts mother died, and Robert becomes part of the new family with Margaret when Laurence marries her - he is L's step son, as indicated.

Robert appears with Margaret on the 1901 census and on the 1911 he is classed as stepson

No, doesn't seem the answer, as I can see Laurence in 1901 and he is single then. So not mush time to have fitted in a previous marriage!

And, I see you have found Robert with Margaret in 1901.

Though interestingly there is a Lawrence Mackin marriage in Middlesbrough (not to an Evans) in Sep qtr 1901, so very shortly before the Lawrence Mackin/Margaret Armstrong marriage in Jun qtr 1902.

Regardless of whether that was the same Lawrence having a very short first marriage, it does look clear that stepson Robert arrived with Margaret.
