Title: Dudding in Holywell
Post by: Huwcyn on Saturday 23 January 16 20:34 GMT (UK)
I read an article from 1985 today in which a lady whose ancestors had this name noted that she had evidence of 5 children born to a Thomas and Mary Dudding in the 1740s in Holywell. Has anyone else come across records for this family, or has any knowledge of them ? They seem to have been miners who spread out west afterwards.

FindmyPast has some records of interest:

Baptisms:
John son of Thos. Doodee and Mary, Holywell 20 Jul 1748
Joseph son of Thomas Doodie and Mary, Holywell 6 Jan 1744
Jane dau. of Thomas Dooding and Mary, Holywell 2 Sep 1751
James son of Thomas Doody, Holywell 23 Apr 1739

There is also a burial of a James Doody 20 Nov 1839 (said to be at Nannerch?)

Regards

Thank you very much. I wasn't aware of that site, I must admit. I'd think that there were more births for Thomas and Mary, but the huge variation in the spelling of their surname makes life difficult. Does anyone know the origin of the name ?

I haven't tried to read it to see if it is relevant(not the easiest),but there is a will of Thomas Doody of Llanasaph(Llanasa),1727 at NLW.

I find it all very interesting - I'm researching the family on behalf of a distant American cousin who is certainly descended from a Robert Dudding, born in Anglesey around 1769. I suspect that she would be the son of either the John (b 1748), or Joseph ( b 1744)  born in Holywell.
Robert Dudding named a daughter Grace, so this suggests a connection. Robert Dudding's grand-daughter was also named Grace Roberts (daughter of a Griffith Roberts). She married a Daniel Jones in Wisconsin. Daniel Jones came originally from near Golden Grove. I wonder if that's just a coincidence, or had the families kept a connection over a century or so ? . I know Daniel Jones was a lead miner, and possibly Griffith Roberts (though named as a farmer in Anglesey) had kept some of the 'Dudding' family knowledge in mining. Would the lead mining industry in that part of Flintshire have existed circa the 1750s ?

Looks like lead mining had been in Flintshire for many centuries.
