Hi, could you confirm her name please. DOWSE or DOUCE? Her Parents names as well if you have them, this will confirm right person possibly. There are no marriages or deaths on Qld Births, Marriages or Deaths.

Have you looked into the possibility of her return to UK.?

Hi keyboard,
many thanks for the freemantle information,
i have now found it with some searching for douce as a domestic i was looking for Dowse and an Dressmaker and as i had her landing Brisbane thats also where i looked.(see below)
Name   Maria Dowse
Birth   1878
Origin   Lincolnshire, England
Departure   London, England
Arrival   5 Dec 1907 - Brisbane - Age: 29

I take it then that she then sailed to Brisbane hence what i have found above, also she seems to have been travelling alone,  which i assume would be unusual for a lady been also single, back then, heres hoping she did well and i can  find what happened to her afterwards.
many thanks

The Ortona went from WA to Victoria, NSW and on to Brisbane.

The Brisbane arrival:

http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/Researchers/ImmigrationIndexes/Documents/Ortona_1906_May_to_1908_Mar_QSA_Item_18490.pdf

Scroll down to PDF page 13.

It wasn't unusual for single women to emigrate alone but she may have known someone in Queensland.

Find My Past has this possible Australian marriage reference, but needs looking into a bit more to confirm that this is the correct person,as such a vast country.

        Victoria Marriages 1836-1942
        Maria Dowse to Frederick Thompson.
        Year,  1910.

Hi Debs14, I have checked the Vic BDM and the marriage is there with no confirming feature on the index. It would take a little warp on the plastic to get a true result and it will show parents so confirming.

But I can find NOTHING more on either Vic, SA, NSW, WA, births deaths and marriages. These are all free to search simply by typing the state and the wording BDM.

Of course Frederick may have died and she remarried, or she divorced Frederick and remarried or she left and or changed her name, all real possibles. ::)

Deb,
It is easy to access Australian records.  Many are freely available. A few require private resources in order to get more detail.
Have a look at the Resources list at the top of the Australian Board to get started.

For instance you can easily find the births and deaths of the children to George BLOW right here

https://www.bdm.qld.gov.au/IndexSearch/queryEntry.m?type=births

Have a look here for death notices and other sightings.

Hi,

The chartered steamer "Scotland" arrived at Keppel Bay on the evening of 14th September 1882 after dropping off passengers at Thursday Island, Cooktown, Townsville, Bowen and Mackay.  After unloading the passengers for Rockhampton including George and Emily Blow the steamer "Scotland" went onto Brisbane.

The "Scotland" would have anchored up somewhere in Keppel Bay and the passengers would have been brought up the Fitzroy River by smaller vessels to the Immigration Centre in Rockhampton.

The steamer "Scotland" was a large vessel and overall 582 souls were landed in Queensland Ports including the 3 births and 14 deaths that occurred during the voyage.

For a bit of info.

Hi Aussie,
.....it seems that emily and her husband george followed Maria down to Australia 5 yrs later,

George and Emily married 16 May 1882 and left for Australia very soon after.  Maria emigrated 25 years later in 1907.  Emily was 14 years older than Maria.

The marriage of George and Emily:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NF45-HNY

The immigration record is here with the digitised passenger list:

http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/Researchers/Indexes/Immigration/Pages/Immigration1848.aspx

Click on the letter 'B' in the 'Search the indexes' section, scroll to find George and Emily then click on the blue link beside the name for the ship Scotland.

Emily had died the year before Maria came to Queensland so perhaps she originally came out to help George with the young children.

Hi Ros you sent me this link below for the husband of Lilian agnes Blow.
(Death of son-in-law A.Galloway http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article54282991)
I have read through the link for his death along with all the other bits in the paper about him,
i have been able to find he came from the uk 1909 to Australia,in the uk he was a farm labourer, and in one the notices in the above link states a notice from
"Member Of The Royal Victoria Lodge"-(M.U.I.O.O.F),it seems he was member of what we call "Freemasons"
I find this interesting and am trying to look into this via Google.
Many thanks
