Hi all,
Tricky one maybe but looking for some help.
My G Grandfather was one Francis H Warren, who disappeared and never came back shortly after my Grandfather was born in 1918. As far as my mum knows, her dad (my Grandfather) never saw him again. However, he did tell her once that he suspected he had a half brother living in Wales, near Aberystwyth.
Anyway, I was doing a random search for his name the other day and uncovered this fantastic photograph of him (see attached). Underneath this photo was the caption "Francis H. Warren (London artist) taken in 1921 with Miss Mona Vivian at the London Hippodrome
photo provided by Francis' grandson Alan."
Understandably this came as something of a surprise, as my mum had no idea other than a fleeting mention of this as a possibility from my Grandfather.
What I would like to know is if it's possible to trace this side of his family any more? I have done some cursory research and found he was living in Stratford on Avon in 1939 with a Florence I Warren and with a child/dependent (who can't be named) and also that he died in Stratford. Does anyone know how best to find the mothers maiden name and then perhaps a birth record for the 1939 child/dependent?
Any help much appreciated or any other information at all.

I was wondering that sgh28, as Francis Howlett Warren married Dorothy A Archer in 1911, which doesn't fit with what was said in the first post.

So perhaps what we are asking is how sure are you that the photo you've found of Francis H Warren is your Francis?

I was wondering if anyone had got any further with this. I am writing a brief essay on Francis H. Warren and his work as an artist, and I'm obviously puzzled by the existence of his wife Florence in 1939. There is no record of a marriage between Francis and Florence, and when Francis died in 1960 probate was granted to his widow Dorothy Ada. They also had a son named (rather oddly, I thought!) Fritz Olaf, born in 1914 and who was killed in action in Burma in 1944 whilst serving with the Royal Artillery. Presumably Alan Warren, Francis's grandson Alan was Fritz's son - however, I can find no relevant birth records for an Alan Warren. Any ideas?

Welcome to Rootschat.
Unfortunately, fauves didn't come back to answer anything on this thread and hasn't logged into Rootschat for about 18 months. We don't know whether the photo is any connection to their Francis H Warren or not.

Ah, well, it was worth a try. Thanks.

I have lots of information and pictures of him . Answer a few questions yes he left his first wife Ada in 1918 and in 1924 was living common law with my Grandmother Florence Cable ( nee Auster) who divorced her first husband. My father was born in 1924 Francis Badger Warren in London. They moved to Stratford in Avon then Aberystweth for a year then back to Stratford living at 60 Evasham Road . Thanks for posting this. I'll absorb the extra information in due course and get back to you. In the meantime, I'd posted a piece on F.H. Warren (which obviously needs revising) on a friend's blog last year - here's the link:

Hello all, I am the great granddaughter of 'Marnie' which was the nickname of Isobel Florence Auster. My paternal grandfather was John Derrek Cable, son of Marnie, and half-brother to Badger. Our family believed Marnie and Francis Warren to be married, but after some research, it looks like they never married. We have a beautiful portrait by Francis, painted in oils of Marnie, which hangs in my uncle's house. I have attached a photo of the portrait, and a photo of my grandfather John Derrek Cable, Marnie's son.

So my father and uncle must be your cousins! Or I guess half-cousins?
