Title: Help with 1918 Wiltshire marriage please
Post by: Sumi on Tuesday 09 February 16 18:27 GMT (UK)
I am familiar with searching LancashireOPC but just can't work out how to search on the Wiltshire site.  Would appreciate some help with the 1918 marriage of Walter F Lindley at St James church Ludgershall.

thank you
Sue

It would seem that there is not yet a OPC for Ludgershall.;http://www.wiltshire-opc.org.uk/genealogy/index.php/parish-directory/item/183-ludgershall

As you probably already know his spouse was Florence A Pennels, from GRO BMD register.

Sue,
Do you know anything else about him as it should be able to find him on the census in say 1911 and 1901.

thank you youngtug and Peter.  Won't give you the complicated version but basically we are trying to find our Walter who was born 1893/4 in London.  We have him in 1901 and in 1911 age 17 with family in Shipton Bellinger, Hants....we are trying to find out if the Walter Frederick who married in Ludgershall is our man (he is not a direct ancestror, just curious as there is a mystery about him)  The few records we are sure of do not mention middle name Frederick.  His father's name was George.

I couldn't find army records online so would appreciate anything you have.

UK, Royal Navy Registers of Seamen's Services, 1853-1928
Walter Frederick Lindley
Service No. F2962
born 4 January 1894, Westminster, London
occupation Engine Driver
Period of Service was 6 January 1915 to 31 March 1918

Free search of the 1939 Register

Walter F Lindley, born 10 Sep 1895

Best to check original (maybe next week!) Birth reg of a Florence Alice Pennells, Dec 1897, Pewsey, so those birth years may be unreliable in 1939.

many thanks...saw the naval records but we think our man was army and MAY have become an officer...it's all based on someone else's tree that has no sources.  Will have to purchase the marriage certificate to maybe rule this Walter out.

thanks again
Sue
PS...just spotted your second post with the telephone directory info....that sounds promising!  Thank you jonw65

There's an Airmen's Service Record as well!
Walter Frederick Lindley
born 4 January 1894, Westminster
civilian occupation - Engine Driver
current engagement - Navy
person to be informed of casualty - George (just George!), 22 Albert St, Maidstone

Transferred to R.A.F. 1.4.1918
Transferred to R.A.F. Reserve, 6.4.19

Was mentioned in despatches
On the face of it, they appear to be two different people. Although there doesn't seem to be a birth registration of one Walter Frederick in 1894/5, let alone two!

Well spotted Rosie!
North Tidworth, Holy Trinity
died 10 Aug 1972
born 25 Sep 1894

This is the man who married Alice/Florence Pennells. His birth date in 1939, if transcribed correctly, is not exactly the same.
The military records appear to be of the man living close to Ludgershall with father George on the last census (info from Sumi)
Is there no way of finding out about a Lieut.Colonel? Or else it will have to be purchasing the marriage cert. Or asking for a lookup! Parish registers for Ludgershall, Wilts (St James) are also available at the London FHC - including marriages up to 1944
John

Modified! It's an MI - 10 Aug is death date!

thanks to you all we have some very useful information....particularly the next of kin information and address which tallies with solid records we have.  Looks like our man is NOT the one who married Ludgershall as date of birth completely different.

But something is wrong.
In the 1891 census, George Henry + Kate Lindley are at 64 Romney Street, St John the Evangelist, Westminster. Registration District, St George Hanover Square. Two sons John, 4, William, 2, born Westminster.
1901 they are in Portsmouth. I won't list all the family, children born London are -
John 13
William 12
Walter 8
Arthur 6

Birth registrations in St Geo Hanover Sq (looking for all Lindleys in volume 1a, there's not many)
Well, I don't know about John, there is a George Henry L in Sep 1886
A William Lindley, registered March 1890
Walter Lindley, Dec 1893
Arthur Lindley, March 1896

I haven't seen anyone else that Dec 1893 Walter could be, if he isn't yours. You said you weren't aware of the middle name.
But that birth registration could not be right for a birth on 4 January 1894! As given on the miltary records.
It would be right for a birth in late September, albeit one year earlier than the Walter F in Tidworth (on his death reg)
John

thanks again John....a birth certificate has been ordered.  As I said before, this Walter is the brother of direct ancestor Arthur who we know about.  Arthur's next of kin on army records is father George 22 Albert St so that's the clincher.  The mystery was created when we saw a tree that has Walter as an army officer who spent time in Tidworth but offered no sources,  Lt Colonel W F Lindley of The Bays is mentioned on the Forces site so may take out a sub.

regards, Sue
