Hi,
I'm having some real problems with my Clarke ancestors. My ancestor Joseph Ann Clark b 1832 and her sister Salome Asenath b.1830 had parents called Joseph Clark and Ann King (I think based on the fact they married in 1829). In 1841 Ann is a widow. There were two Joseph Clark deaths registered in 1837 and I contacted the registry office saying could they check whether Ann may have registered one of the deaths. I gave them all the details including Joseph's occupation (Sawyer) and they said that neither entry matched the information I gave them. I'm not sure what to do next...does anyone know if there are any other burials between 1830 and 1837 listed? Should I apply for these certificates and is there any point? Can I view death certificate entries at the archives?

Hi Burto
Salome's baptism took place at St Mary's Nottingham and there is an entry on the NBI for a death for a Joseph Clarke aged 41 on 21/02/1837 also at St Mary's. I wonder if it might be worth having at look at St Mary's records for his death?
The 1841 census with Ann, Salom(a) and Ann has the family in St Mary's Nottingham.

Post edited coz i was talking nonsense!!
Here's details of the 1837 burials at Nott St Mary
1837 02 21 Joseph CLARKE age 41 Clare St Nottingham St Mary
1837 12 26 Joseph CLARKE age 33 Garners Hill Nottingham St Mary
Does either of those ages or addresses look possible?

Thanks both. Ok I enquired about the Dec 1837 one, sorry just realised they wouldn't have given me any info for the Feb one as there wouldn't have been a certificate!
Maybe it is the Clare Street one...would the records at the archives tell me anything or just what has been quoted here?

I think the transcribers of the CD have included the info that is available to them in the burial records in which case you won't get more from the church register.
However, the death certificate (which you could get for the December burial) will show Joseph's occupation and the name of the informant, which might be helpful.

"In 1841 Ann is a widow."
How do you know she was a widow? Just because there was no husband present on the 1841 does not mean he was dead.
The baptism of Salome says her father was a Lawyer ??? Easy to mix up an old "S" and a "L" How do you know he was a sawyer?

grrr ---
but taking a different tack --
the newspapers are now online. If Joseph Clarke was a lawyer, I would expect him to appear in the local papers in one form or another.
I've found a Joseph Clarke, Sawyer, who died age 54 in Nottingham in Sept 1832. This Joseph, sawyer, was uncle to Mr Isiaih Clarke, surgeon dentist, of the Pavement, Notts.
I can't see any mentions of any lawyers (or solicitors etc) called Joseph Clarke in Notts.

I hope this hasn't annoyed people, that wasn't my intention, I just need some ideas as I'm stuck.

Did you see my post above yours?
I would want to check out this sawyer Joseph, especially as there is that bit of detail about his family.

Isaiah Clark's father was William, and died in 1829 in his 63rd year in Louth.
Isaiah's brother, James, married in Pontefract to the daughter of a solicitor.
Sawyer/lawyer - either could be possible, either could be mistyped then and now. The newspaper report of Joseph's death definitely says sawyer, but if he's from a family that includes a dentist and marries in the legal profession, he could well have been a lawyer.

It is annoying Burto - sorry about that, If I have offended you! But if the info is already on here, to spend an age looking again is a waste of our time and energy.
You now have 4 new posts all on the same family lines. Stick to one post and it keeps it neat and tidy and all in one place. ;)

Hi Annie,
My Joseph's daughter, Joseph Ann, says he was a Sawyer on her marriage certificate.

Annie
Lawyer/ Sawyer
Not sure his wife and girls would be in such a lowly trade (1841 census) surely as a Lawyer he would have left them in some comfort.

Hi Annie65115: I've found the newspaper with the info on Joseph's death but where did you find the other info about Isiah's Dad and brother? Thanks.

Since that was 11 months ago, I'm afraid I've forgotten! But the likelihood is that I searched in the newspapers - can't think of any other way I would have mentioned a Louth connection.
