Title: Daniel Fraser D about 1869, Nairn - advice for researching military career
Post by: Minnesotan on Tuesday 16 February 16 04:27 GMT (UK)
My ancestor Daniel Fraser (1787-1869) supposedly had a military career and his rank was captain.

Questions
1. Was 'captain' used in all branches of the military?
2. Is it true that to find a person’s military record, I need to first find the regiment or ship on which he served?
3. Lookup request on Scotland's people for DOD please

About Daniel Fraser, parents are James Fraser and Mary Campbell

Born between 1773 and 1787 • Ardersier, Inverness-shire, Scotland (source for 1773 birth is my 1953 family tree; source for later DOB are 1851 and 1861 census)
1839, Nairn, married Mary Fraser, daughter of Wm Fraser and Elizabeth Mackenzie
1842 to 1849, Nairn, children Mary, Eliza, Jane Daniel born
1851, Nairn, grocer
1861, Nairn, grocer
About 1869, Died, Nairn, - Not confirmed (source for DOD is my 1953 family tree that is turning out to be very accurate on birth/marriage/death, problem is I don't have any source documents)

I have already searched the following for his death with no luck (a genealogy wizard must have put a curse on me this week)
1. ancestry UK
2. familysearch
3. Findagrave all of Scotland
4. scotland's people

Did you see this death announcement in the Nairnshire Telegraph of 4 August 1869?

"At 8 Church Street, Nairn, on the 28th ultimo Mr Daniel Fraser, formerly merchant, aged 96."

Church Street tallies with the 1861 census.

There's an obituary on page 3 of the same paper "Death of a Veteran Town Councillor". It doesn't mention a military career.

Shaun and ev, Thanks for the info. I have not seen any of these things. Did you find them on scotlandspeople?

For Scottish ancestry research, should I join Scotland's People? I have been using Ancestry World Explorer but I've been disappointed because all of their Scotland census, marriage and birth records are indexes with no image. FYI, I'm not a a genealogy novice. But I am new to Scotland genealogy.

ev, What does Wills section of SP mean?

All, I retrieved the obit. Thanks so much. I agree that since there is no mention of a military career/captain my tree with said information must be wrong. Thanks for your help.
