Title: LOCKE, how can I find records for free from Armagh Ireland
Post by: margden on Tuesday 16 February 16 21:57 GMT (UK)
Hi all, I'm new to rootschat, but have been researching my LOCKE Family from Armagh Ireland for years. I have names and dates but don't know exactly where to look for records. I can't afford to pay for any info, and what I have is from someone who I've lost contact with before I got copies of records. Any help with locating free sites to research bmd records from Armagh area would be great,

Thanks in advance

Not RC,  on arrival in Canada they were Wesleyan Methodists

The statutory birth and death records start in 1864. Non RC marriages in 1845. You can’t get them free. They are on the GRONI site and you need to pay to view them. You can view the original certificates on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2 (sterling) to a view a certificate.

For pre 1864 events you generally need church records. Copies of many of the surviving records (of all denominations) are in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast. They are free to view, but a personal visit is required to see them. Otherwise you could try writing to the church where you think the originals may be held. Not all churches will reply and some of those that do will charge you for searching the records.

The 1901 & 1911 censuses are free:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

as is Griffiths Valuation and the revaluation records:

http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml

http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/search_the_archives/val12b.htm

But frankly, you won’t get very far if you are unable or unwilling to pay for records.

Thanks for the help,  all records I need are prior to 1864 and I've given up hope of finding anything now unless I come across another relation that has already gotten copies. Unfortunately I am not able to afford anything so I rely on free sites. Without knowing the ancestors church or even town lived in I guess there is no hope.

If you post what you know then there is a very good chance somebody will be able to give you some new information at some point. Please post a detailed summary.

Be sure to include names and dates for the people born in Armagh, and why you think they were from Armagh. And be sure to also include approximate date of immigration and exact locations for their early years in Canada. If your Irish-born relatives married somebody Irish in Canada then include spouse information as that is often significant.

I have a research interest in early Methodism in Armagh and I definitely have some Locke records and references.

I don't know if this ties in or not, but the Silas suggests a connection
Seagoe Ch of Ire records -I don't have the previous page and it looks like there may have been more Lock entries on page 77 from  Seagoe Records 1660-1821.

to John and Martha Lock of Edenderry
Elizabeth  May 10, 1812
Silas  Nov 28, 1813
Thomas Feb 6, 1820

Josias  April 1, 1821  John Locke and Ellen Williamson  a bastard

Then 1821-1865 Seagoe Records
John Lock  married Jan 6, 1841 to Henrietta Eliza Overend of Edenderry  Balloriggan parish Subinspector of Constabulatory
Martha Locke of John and his wife of Edenderry   bapt Jan-19-1822
Dorothea Locke married to William McKain  Mar 27, 1823  Seagoe parish
Mary Jane Locke bapt Mar 5, 1826 of John and Martha  of Edenderry
Singleton Locke  bapt Mar 30, 1828  of John and Martha of Edenderry

No Lock or Locke entries after this point in this edition or 1865->?

I have information about Joseph Locke, my 2nd g grandfather and his decendants.  I also have recently been in touch with a few more folks that may have much more information.

Peter Locke, Seattle WA

The statutory birth and death records start in 1864. Non RC marriages in 1845. You can’t get them free.

They have become free on https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/
This website includes BMDs for the whole of Ireland until Partition in 1921.

Welcome to RootsChat, Greenguy.

Thanks. I was actually trying to connect with the person who originally posted the question as that person seems to have a mutual gggg grandfather and had some details that I didn't have.  The original post was from 2016, so I may have missed the opportunity to connect.
