Title: Bognie Farm, Rafford
Post by: Kate B on Sunday 21 February 16 16:52 GMT (UK)
I've traced the McGillivray family from 1755 to 1911.  Last sighting was on the 1911, where father b1828 and son b1866 (both called James) are living with the married daughter of James Snr. at Bognie Farm, Rafford.

The McGillivrays had lived at Bognie farm all through the censuses and probably even before that.

Is Bognie Farm still there?  Has it changed hands since 1911?  Who owns it now? Any pictures, photos?  Ideas, suggestions etc welcome!

Thanks

Its only one turbine and it would be at the back of the farm at the top of the hill.

I'm speechless  - I can't believe its still standing (albeit with double glazing etc!). Thank you so much, Forfarian.  Perfect! :o

Thank you too to Don and Monica for their help.

I've found a burial list where the particular branch of ancestors (and residents of Bognie Farm) are all buried in the "Rafford Old" cemetery.  Is anyone local, who could take a photo of the graveyard, stone - or is this just far too much to ask for?  Any ideas who to contact to ask for this favour? ::)

Thank you all again for all of your help.

Hello Kate, I had a 3x great aunt who lived in Rafford. She managed to produce several children, all without a marriage in sight. One of her sons Baptised 18-1-1863 in Forres was called George McGillivray Cant. On his birth entry it states he was illigitimate.
Father- John McGillivray ploughman. Mother- Mary Cant domestic farm servant.
Informant John McGillivray father of Bognie Rafford.

John went on to marry Elspet McGillivray and they had 7 children. My Illegitimate George was living with John and Elspet as their son on the 1881 census in Todholes, and the 1871 in Rafford.
I am thinking John may be connected to you.
Also, a little something I came across.
Margaret McGillivray 1843 in Shoggle on the Roll of the free Church.
George McGillivray 1843      ditto
James McGillivray 1843 In Bognie on roll Of Free Church
Jane McGillivray 1843     ditto
Janet McGillivray 1843  In Meadow on Roll of Free Church

We visited Rafford old Church yard- the Church no longer exists, there is a new one a short distance away. I did take lots of photos but only my lot, so cannot help you there.

Larkspur:
YES!  John is the son of *my* James b1800 and Mary of Bognie (no marriage record found, but circa 1825).

I started by looking for James and Mary’s son, Alexander b1835, who married Margaret Walker in April 1857 and a few months later immigrated to New York.  I got James b1800 back to his grandparents who married in 1791 at Rafford.

I feel as though I’m doing a one-name study, especially of the Rafford McGs of Bognie, Sourbank and Shogle.  None of them seemed to have any imagination when it came to naming their children.

I’ve saved the censuses of Todholes McG family but haven’t looked into them as I’m busy with the Bognie lot.   I have the Bognie McG families 1841-1911, after which is must have changed hands.  (Sad story involved).

Haven’t come across a place called Meadow yet (Janet McG b1843) – so another place added to my TO DO list.  May I ask where you got the Church Rolls (and please don’t tell me Greggs  ;D    )?

I purchased a couple of small books when we were in Moray called "The Lands and People of Moray", I have parts 24 Parish of Rafford and 25 Parish of Dallas which cover the areas I am interested in.

Kate, I just realised that no one so far has mentioned LIBINDX http://libindx.moray.gov.uk/mainmenu.asp so far on this thread. Have you had a look at that?

Thank you Forfarian:
Yes, that’s where I found out quite a bit of the burials, etc.
Sometimes, it shows names of parents etc (although dates or names are not always correct), as well as articles in the local newspapers about BMDs for the buried person.  (it would cost me a fortune to buy them all at £1 an article!)

Thanks to you too, Larkspur
I have James b1803 m Margaret Urquhart (of Blewie/Blervie/Hill of Blervie/ Blervie Hill!) and will be following them up soon.  I’ve put them on the back burner as I’m not too sure they are from the line I’m following – I’ve yet to make the link to James b1800 (son of George b1768 and Elspet, proved cos I bought James’ DC) and Mary Nairn b1798 (dau of Peter and Jean James).

So many repetitive names – I need a bank of computers to keep up with it all!

For future reference, for those interested in the McGs, another brilliant website is:

Thank you Scotsquinne...yes, I now have the photos of the McG's gravestones (thanks to a forum friend who would probably prefer to remain anonymous, but s/he knows who they are!)

Sourbank a B&B...wonder if I can get booked in for next year?

Thanks again for your very kind offer.

In the 1797 farm horse tax register for Rafford, there are two people of the name mentioned:

Alexander McGillavray, Tulloch, 1 horse, duty 2/-

George McGillavray, Tulloch, 2 horses, 1 not liable to duty, therefore duty 2/-

There is no mention of Bognie by name anywhere.

Meadow is not shown on OS maps, not even the largest scale C19th ones, probably because it was not a separate farm but was a farm worker's cottage near to Cluny in the South-East of the Parish. The inhabitants in the 1841 Census were Thomas Anderson with his wife and 3 children. Janet MacGillivray was not there then. The Free Church Rolls that show Janet MacGillivray there in 1843 also show that Thomas Anderson was still there in 1843 so probably Janet was in domestic service there or else was another farm worker boarding there. She was not there in the 1851 Census, either, so I would not spend time looking for a family of MacGillivrays from Meadow.
I have two MacGillivrays on my Tree who married Laing relatives of mine. One is Elizabeth McG. daughter of George McG. and Janet McDonald, born Sourbank 1st May 1847, who married Thomas Laing of Briach on 18th June 1869. The other is Thomas McG. son of Alexander McG. and Elizabeth Moir in Shogle, born 12th Nov. 1830, who married Isabella Laing of Blackhillock of Burgie on 7th June 1855.
If you come across either of these in your researches and would like more information I can help.
Regards, Alastair MacDonald

are you still searching for McGillivrays after 1911.  I am a McGillivray and know where they went.

I'm a McGillivray also, and have had trouble tracing backwards - I'd be interested in seeing your lines to see if it gives any clues to where we connect in!

Kate B - likewise, if you have your research available somewhere that I can cast an eye over and see if we connect somewhere?  Would really appreciate it!

My grandfather was Anthony McGillivray who came to Canada in 1897 from Bognie.  He lived in Winnipeg and worked on the railroad.  He was killed in a train accident in 1930.  He had 6 children with Mary Stirling.  James Fraser McGillivray was my father b 1912 d 1997.
How far back do you have the family living at Bognie?  Did they live at Shogle before that or is that a different McG family?  Id be very interested to learn about that.  Thank you!
