Title: Any information on 1660 Petition by Inhabitants of Wexford?
Post by: Wexflyer on Saturday 27 February 16 07:47 GMT (UK)
I was looking back through some historical newspaper articles online when I came across an item that is new to me. There was a reference to a 1660 petition to the king in London, after the death of Cromwell and the restoration of the monarchy, from the inhabitants of Wexford. Anyone heard of this, or know anything about it? Seems to me it would be interesting to locate it, as
- Presumably it contains the names of inhabitants of Wexford in 1660, and
- Has historical interest, with regard to the events of 1649 (Cromwellian massacre of Wexford).

Thanks

Perhaps better to say lots of misinformation? That site belongs to the David Irvine school of historical studies. The NLI link does not work for me either, unfortunately,

Thanks. The Down Survey for Co. Wexford was published many years ago. I have a copy of the book. I also have many of the maps.

No - my daughter is a student at Trinity at present, so I think I will commission her to do some lookups for me (once she gets through her exams).

Turns out that the petition I am interested in is reprinted in full in Hore's History of the Town of Wexford.

Did you happen to get your hands on a copy of that petition? I would be interested to know what names were on it.

The book containing it is available free online, as copyright expired a long while ago. Google Hore, History of Wexford. Their history is a 6 volume set, covering the entire county, by area. The 1660 petition is in the volume covering the town of Wexford - volume 5, I think. I am travelling, so providing the exact link is beyond me right now - perhaps someone else can supply? Volume 5 contains a lot of interest besides, e.g. 1662 valuation of Wexford, listing tenants,  etc.
