Title: Benjamin Fletcher
Post by: fletch001 on Saturday 05 March 16 13:00 GMT (UK)
Hi Everyone,
I do really need some expert help regarding Benjamin Fletcher, i have no dob or place of birth for him. All i know is he definitely was the father of George Fletcher (21 March 1765) in Whitby. I am presuming that he moved to Whitby from somewhere else or from local area maybe. There is no mention of his wife either or date of marriage or death. Any help would be gratefully received, thank you all.
Regards
Mike Fletcher

There is another baptism in Whitby for a George Fletcher 4 years later with parents Benjamin & Elizabeth.  I wonder if the 1765 George died in infancy  :-\

Hi Rosie,
I have already checked this out, it is not them, I have a copy of the family tree from living relatives who's ancestors left Whitby for Canada. I think they have the original bible. My George married Hannah Dale and had 7 children in Whitby.

To help out a little more i will add the details from the original family bible of George Fletcher born 1808, just in case i have some details wrong.
George Fletcher born 1808 in Ruswarp, Whitby Parish NR of Yorkshire
Occupation Miller, Farmer & Joiner
He married Elizabeth Lynass, married 19 May 1834 in Whitby Parish NR of Yorkshire.
Born 13 May 1813 in Whitby, daughter of George W Lynass and Jane Moon

These are the original entries from the Fletcher bible from the Fletcher family now living in Canada. I am originally from Loftus but now live in Scotland. This information may help to find the correct ancestors further back from 1808. Thanking you all for any help you may be able to give

Hi Rosie,
Regarding Thomas Robinson Fletcher, On the various census he was known as Thomas Fletcher he only used his initial R on one of them (1871). All I know is what is on the original Fletcher copy of the bible entry is correct.
I have also seen a lot of the Fletcher family trees on Ancestry and they go off on tangents, totally different to what my copy of the Fletcher bible says. Mind you, i have fallen into this trap many times before, I do not trust the information on other family trees anymore, i do try to do a proper research to get things correct.
Regards
Mike

I see he also married and 'died' as Thomas Robinson Fletcher.  I was just hoping it might give a clue maybe to his paternal grandmother.  Not that I found a suitable marriage for a Fletcher to a ..Robinson.

Hi SGF28,
Many thanks for your information. Regarding the Benjamin Fletcher born 1713 died 1780. That could be Benjamin's father. The church, St Mary the Virgin, Whitby is the church most of the Fletcher family seem to have been christened/married or buried in before they emigrated or moved further afield.
Regarding the Benjamin at Bog Hall (Ruswarp), he is the correct Benjamin i am looking for but now totally lost in where to search next. Any further help you may be able to give would be a big bonus but many thanks for getting back.
Kind Regards
Mike Fletcher

SGF28,
My George Fletcher born 1765 married a Hannah Dale so he was not the George who died Mar 1769. I may be on the wrong track or there is two different Benjamin Fletchers.

Mike

This burial for Elizabeth Fletcher, maybe a bit old to be George's mother, not unknown though:

St Mary the Virgin
2nd November 1790

Age 65, year of birth 1725
Widow of Benjamin Fletcher, carpenter, Bog Hall

She left a will, March 1791, Elizabeth Fletcher, widow of Bogghall Whitby.

I am wondering if this is Benjamin's marriage:

26th June 1748
Hawnby North Yorkshire
Benjamin Fletcher of Hawnby
Elizabeth Scott of Pickering married after Banns

Children with father Benjamin, baptised Hawnby
Andrew baptised 7th May 1749
John baptised 16th December 1753
Alice baptised 23rd May 1756, of Bilsdale
Mary baptised 15th April 1759, of Bilsdale

Haven't found a George born in Hawnby :( Maybe they moved to Whitby after Mary's birth :-\

Burial 31st August 1756, Benjamin Fletcher son of Benjamin Fletcher of Bilsdale

SGF,
Found Andrew Fletcher born in Hawnby 7 May 1749 that would make him around 28 when he married in Whitby. His father is Benjamin Fletcher born around 1723 Hawnby wife Elizabeth Scott born around 1727. Other Children  John (1753), Benjamin (1751 - 1756), Alice (1756) and Mary (1759). Possibly had George 1765 when/if they moved to Whitby (25 Miles from Hawnby). Not sure about the other George buried 1769?

Regarding Elizabeth Fletcher's will, Widow of Boghall, Whitby. I received this today. Made out in March 1791. Executors of the will is Elizabeth's Sister, a Mary Readman (Widow) and a Thomas Reah both in the parish of Egton. Any money left to go to Elizabeth's sons George and Benjamin Fletcher. Any further help anyone can give would be of great help, thank you all in advance. Apparently Mary Readman and Thomas Reah married in Egton.

Getting confused regarding Benjamin Fletcher. This is what I can confirm so far.
Benjamin Fletcher born about 1713, no idea where born
Death is confirmed in Whitby and burial was 26 May 1780 aged 67
Married an Elizabeth no idea when or where from
Had two sons, confirmed as George Fletcher born 21 Mar 1764 - Died 20 Mar 1769. Second Son also named George Fletcher born 9 May 1769 = Died 1845, both in Whitby.

The Benjamin Fletcher in Hawnby was born 1723 a 10 yr difference.
Any help would be gratefully received thank you
Kind Regards
Mike
