Hello,
I am a new member, looking for informations about my ancestors MACLEOD.
My GdGd father was Kenneth Macleod :
1868 : born in Knock, Lewis (Scotland), son of Kenneth.
1894 : MA (Master of Art) at the Aberdeen's University.
1899 : ordained into the Free Church of Scotland.
1902 : minister of UFC in West Manse Kincardine Ardgay, Ross-Shire.
1947 (march 27) : death in Tain, Ross-Shire.
I am looking for informations about his parents and his wife.
He had a son, John Macleod (born around 1884) who emigrated to South Africa.
He is my Gd father.
Hope to have some contact with someone who knows something more !

Hi Jim,
Thank you for all these informations.
Maybe he is the right person, do you know in what place the 1871 census was done ?
Here is a photo of the roll of graduates of the Aberdeen University, where there are some informations :

Hi Rick
To add to Jim's info above. This is the birth index entry for son Kenneth mentioned above https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F79T-K5S
As you can see, birth date matches well, 16 May. The year though 1867 rather than 1868 as you have on the clip you posted .
Your Grandfather John, who headed off to SA. Can you reconfirm his birth year of c 1884. Seems to early if his father was born in 1867.
Monica

Hello !
Thank you for the informations to my request !
It is very possible kenneth had his son John at a very young age.
We had the birth date of 1884 from the family in SA.
He married Ida Florence Winifred JOHNSON (daughter of archdeacon of Zululand Charles JOHNSON) in 1923 in Kwazulu-Natal.
If you want more informations on that part of the family, I can pass it on !
I found a 1901 census in Laggan (Inverness county).
Kenneth was a visitor, born in Knock, licenfiale of Free Church of Scotland.
It is possible he's the same person !
I attach the document in the post.
Thank you for your welcoming in this forum !
Rick.

It is very possible kenneth had his son John at a very young age
Extremely unlikely.
Kenneth would only have been 14 at the time of John's birth so extremely doubtful. It's also highly unlikely that his parents would have brought up a child of someone else's daughter claiming him as a son.
The evidence says Kenneth & Christiana are his parents. She would have been about 43/44 at the time which is the top end for a woman to have a child but this is far more likely than a 13/14 yo fathering one.
It did happen with the offspring of a daughter but I've never seen it with a son.
Have you found John in 1911?
Have you a marriage for him?
What makes you believe Kenneth MA is John's father?
-
If I'm reading this all right, Kenneth b.1867 (not 1868) was John's brother, not his father, and their respective father was Kenneth married to Christy Morrison.
1881 has the family as McLeod.

OK got them
Kenneth McLeod 47
Chirstin McLeod 40
Angus McLeod 15
Kenneth McLeod 13
Wm McLeod 11
Maragret McLeod 8
Madden McLeod 5
Donald McLeod 3
Christina McLeod 11 M
So no daughters that could be a possible for John.
Christina seems a very productive mother.

Yes, 14 is a bit young to have children ...!
Here is the John and Ida's marriage certificate in Zululand in 1923.
He was 38, son of Kenneth.
Another document is a part of Ida's mother's diary (Margaret Emily Jenkinson) which mentions Ida's scotch adress :
c/o Rev Ken. Macleod, Ardgay Ross-Shire Scotland.
It is confirmed by a passengers list from SA to UK in 1923 : look at the page on the right, in the middle.
We made some researches about rev Kenneth Macleod in Ardgay, he was the minister of Kincardine, Ardgay, see the last document.
It's a pity I haven't found the 1911 census in Ardgay, so I don't know anything about his marriage.
It's not easy for me to see Kenneth son of Kenneth who's father is Kenneth ...!! So many Kenneth Macleod !!
My mother is Margaret Christine Macleod, born in SA in 1926.

His marriage cert. only says his father is Kenneth so why do you think it's Kenneth MA?
-
Hi,
Can you please give John's Rank or Profession on marriage please as I'm having difficulty reading what it says?
Annie
-
Kenneth MacLeod (who became a Crofter) married Christina Morrison 12/12/1861 (per Scotlands People) - Kenneth bc.1836 son of William MacLeod and Christian MacLeod, Christina dau. of Kenneth Morrison and Margaret McFarlane.
From census/familysearch we know they had the following children:
Angus born 7/8/1865
Kenneth born 16/5/1867
Donald born 24/7/1869 (must have died)
William born circa 1870
Margaret born 9/6/1872
Murdo born circa 1876
Donald born circa 1878
Christina born circa 1880
John born circa 1884
You will only find John's birth on Scotlands People (a pay to view site) BUT there were 8 John MacLeods's registered in Stornaway, Ross & Cromarty in 1884 alone and no way of knowing which one is 'yours' without working through the list.
Mother Christina died in 1892 and looks like Kenneth remarried in 1897 to a Margaret McKay whom he is with in 1901.
So, John (1884) and Kenneth (1867) are brothers, son of Kenneth MacLeod bc.1836 who in turn is the son of a William MacLeod.

Hi,
Can you please give John's Rank or Profession on marriage please as I'm having difficulty reading what it says?
Annie
Annie, he is showing as a School Inspector.
Monica
-
Scotlands People shows Kenneth senior was born Sept.1836 and baptised Stornoway 17/1/1838.
Annette

Annette, to add to the info with Rev Kenneth and John being brothers, the family in 1891 from what we have already with censuses from Jim:
Kenneth Macleod 53 crofter b. Ross, Vatisker Back (original image would help here to determine place name)
Chirsty Macleod 49 b. Ross, Vatisker Back
Maggie Macleod 18 b. Ross, Garrabots Knock
Murdo Macleod 16 b. Ross, Garrabots Knock
John Macleod 6 b. Ross, Garrabots Knock
Address: New Garrabost, Stornoway Ross

Annie, he is showing as a School Inspector.
Thanks Monica........
I was just wondering with Father Kenneth having such a profession as Rev. that it wasn't mentioned on the marriage but possibly this was the norm?
Annie
-
Annie, with last few posts, I think it has been shown that Rev Kenneth b. 1867 was brother to John born c. 1884-5. John's parents Kenneth McLeod and Christina Morrison.
Monica :)
-
I think this is John's two brothers in 1891:
Kenneth Macleod 22 schoolmaster b. Knock Lear, Rossshire
Donald Macleod 12 brother b. Knock Lear, Rossshire
Address: School, Slaggan, Gairloch Northern, Ross

This looks like John in lodgings in Stornaway 1901
34 Church St Court
Flora Kennedy 39
Mary Kennedy 44
George Mackay 28
John Macleod 17
John Macleod 16 scholar
To be a inspector of schools he would have had an extended education.
-
His marriage cert. only says his father is Kenneth so why do you think it's Kenneth MA?
I have supposed that, because of the Ida's scottish adress written on my GdGd mother's diary (Margaret Emily Jenkinson), the same as written on the passengers's list (see attachments).
It is more than possible Kenneth MA and John are brothers.
Thanks a lot for searching on this side, wait for the next ... :)
Carry on ... we are a bit lost in the Macleod's ocean !
Rick.
-
You now have John's family going back to his Grandparents on both sides, so I think you need to carry on from there.

Hello !
