Title: Pub in Lower Knowle ?
Post by: alan w jones on Saturday 12 March 16 12:40 GMT (UK)
Hello , when I was young in the 1950's  I used to visit my aunt in Ravenhill Rd  and I remember my parents and relations used to go down Ravenhill Rd and I think turn right to a local pub . Has anyone got any ideas of its name please ?
Regards
Alan

Would that be in St Luke's Road?
(Right at bottom of Ravenhill Road, then left)
There was a pub on the corner of Windsor Terrace/St Luke's Road.

Possibly:

There's a discussion here:

Thank you for that , I have just looked in my late dads diary and he mentions on January 3rd 1942 , The Boars Head , on January 10th The Three Elms and on January 14th The Cumberland , so they should fit perfectly I think .

Quoting from that Evening Post article:

As you turn left into St Luke's Road from St John's Lane, the pub on the corner was The Boar's Head. On the opposite side of the road was The Three Elms, at the bottom of Oxford Street. As you progress down St. Luke's Road, The Cumberland Hotel (now the Star & Dove) was on the right, at the bottom of Windsor Terrace.

N.B. It's still the Evening Post to me, not the modern title of Bristol Post!! ;D

Hi Alan,

I've just seen your post and it transported me back to my youth.  My parents used to go to the Cumberland most Saturday nights and I remember the Boar's Head where I had my first kiss standing on the step outside, but never went inside.  I think the Three Elms was opposite the Boar's Head at the bottom of Oxford Street.  I don't remember the Bridge Inn though. perhaps it was a bit further down St Lukes Road, towards the bridge over the road.

I lived just off Ravenhill Road in the 1950's so it is quite possible that I knew of your Aunt's family.

Hi Alan,

Sadly, the name does not ring a bell with me.  Depends on how old Linda is I suppose, maybe one of my siblings would know her.  We lived in the road about halfway along, so knew most kids in Ravenhill Road, either side of Ketch Road.

It was nice to go back in my mind anyway.

Hi Liz , Linda was born in 1938 . Do you remember a Mrs Bristow's shop in Ravenhill Rd , it was a normal house with a shop in the front room , I rember having to go down there on occasions for bread etc .

Hi Alan,

I don't remember Linda personally as she was older than me but I do remember the people that moved into her house when they left.

I remember Bristows shop as we had an account there but it was in St John's Lane on the corner of Monmouth or Montgomery St. I think.  Maybe they moved from Ravenhill Road into proper shop premises before I was sent shopping on a regular basis.

I've just spoken to  my brother who still lives in Bristol and asked him if he remembered Linda and immediately,  he said her full name and told me a little anecdote.  She was his age and as she moved when I was quite young I would not remember her.

It brought back a lot of memories of the area talking to my brother and made me think of things I had completely forgotten about. So thanks for the posting.  Not genealogy though.

Best wishes,
Elizabeth
