I know that this is a tall order but l won`t find out until l ask for ideas in how to find something out.
I came across this funeral announcement of a person beloning to my greater family tree but l am left wondering who some of the mentioned people are - as l have not come across them so far.
1st Announcement from TROVE 30 August 1911..
LORKING - The Friends of Mr and Mrs (Florence) H. Quinn, Mr and Mrs Hodson, Mr and Mrs (Edith) Burden, Mr and Mrs Bedford, Mr and Mrs (Daisy) Sadler are kindly invited to attend the Funeral of their late beloved MOTHER, Catherine Lorking; to leave her daughter`s residence, 33 Dalgety-road, Miller`s Point, THIS DAY, at 1.15, for the Rockwood Cemetary.
Catherines husband was Ernest Alfred LORKING (sometimes in the NSW BDM indexes as Alfred E.) but no mention of him in any of the annuncements
I have the Quinns, Burdens and Sadlers in the tree but not the Hodsons or Bedfords
2nd Announcement from the same...
LORKING - The Freinds of Mr and Mrs EDWARD GREEN and FAMILY are kindly invited..(same as above)... of their beloved SISTER and AUNT..(same as above)....
I know that the Mrs Green is Adelaide
I have, for the past hours, been trying to find out who they are from the 1st announcement by looking at the online NSW BDM indexes in diferent combinations with the remaining children of Catherine but to no avail. The remaining children attributed to Catherine and Ernest are the following....Elsie M and Ethal O (married a Johnston).
I know it is a tall order to find something out but l want to a least give it a go !!!
Tips/Advice would be greatly aprreciated in solving this one - I still feel like an ameture at this !!!

Have you checked to see if Maud Catherine BARNES was a married name or Maiden name?
She could have children to a former partner/Husband.

EDIT:
This is not Alfred, the husband of Catherine - possibly his father.
See below
You probably have this and it's no help in finding the names of the children, but perhaps, points to Ernest and Catherine living separately ???
TROVE has the death notice for Ernest Alfred LORKING, died 27 Sep 1908, residence Gale St Woolwich. There is no mention of any family other than his parents: "the late Alfred LORKING and Mrs E LORKING of Kemmis St, Randwick"
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/14995948
Another death notice says he is the husband of Isobel LORKING, and aged 57
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/14999904
The funeral Notice also has no mention of family.
Is this actually the same man - no, see below

Hmm
Seems that my reply above is for a different man.
TROVE has death notices, October, 1921, for Daisy May SADLER (nee LORKING), including one which is for the "friends of Alfred E LORKING to attend the funeral of his dearly beloved daughter, Daisy May SADLER"; the other notices give the names of Daisy's husband - George E SADLER and children Edith and William SADLER.
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/15969078
So Alfred is obviously alive at the time of this Daisy's death. Possibly the one in my earlier reply is his father??

I think he died in Dec 30 1926 Judith
1926 LORKING Ernest A 78 years sydney
And here is his funeral notice (jan 1927)
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article16344437

From these death notices it seems that Florence (wife of Harry QUINN) and Daisy (wife of Ernest SADLER) are still in close contact with their father.

Hi Chatters
Thanks for the time and the info. TROVE is great - have been surfing it to find info. more to the daily grind of individuals than certificates which seem to be hiding information or just plain leaving it out.
So, from what l can gather there were two Ernest Alfred Lorkings living in Sydney at the same time.
1st married to Catherine Barnes - children = Elsie, Florence, Daisy, Edith and Ethel - born Sydeny
2nd married to Isabel Beverage - with children = Clarisse, Reginald and Stella - home births Bondi.
It is also written in TROVE that an Ernest Alfred Lorking became a JP - but which one.
The death dates are for two different ones...
1st - 30th Dec. 1926 Sydney - born 1853 Essex UK
2nd- 27th Sept. 1908 Woolwich - born 1850 Somerset UK
That is one of the most freaky coincidences to date.

Possibly this will be worth further investigation

So, to begin with, it seems Elsie M LORKING , was not a daughter of Ernest,/Alfred but a niece.
Here is the birth of Edith you mention
1615/1886 LORKING Edith
Parents Ernest A & Maud C
At SYDNEY
And her marriage to JOHNSTON (which you have also mentioned)
8456/1912 JOHNSTON William W
LORKING Ethel O

In Memoriam mentions her in 1912
In Loving Memory of our dear mother Catherine Maud LORKING who departed this life ……1911....

Inserted by her loving daughters and son in law Florence and Harry QUINN and grandchildren and Ethel Jonson (sic)

Hey thanks for that more to look at from TROVE - getting somewhere 🙂
So the Bedfords are in there somewhere.
As for the Elsie M - l agree could be a niece instead of a daughter but...
Another researcher has an Elsie M born in 1879 to C & E Lorking but can't find an entry in the indexes as C & E married in 1880 but that is not to say they did not have a child beforehand.
It is normal for family members to be born on the wrong side of the sheets.
Thanks again as every little bit does help.

A bit more to ponder over !!!

A bit more to ponder over !!!
To start with you need to use NSW BMD to list the children of Percy LORKING who will be the cousins of your Ernest Alfred's children. This will go some way in sorting the confusion.

Yep, just started to do that - finish it later today.
Searching/surfing TROVE at the moment.

Not a problem - l will get back to this thread in a couple of days.
Could not wait - found the information while surfing the web - Wikitree - see attach. for starters.
I have added Catherine Maud Barnes to my Alfred Ernest Lorking - birth date and place fits.
l guess Alfred Ernest and Ernest Alfred were cousins

Do you have a death certificate for Catherine LORKING b. 1911.
Death / funeral notices usually attempt to list children in birth order. The notice for Catherine has Florence, Edith, Daisy but I think the NSW BDM index has Florence, Daisy, Edith. Are HODSON and BEDFORD placement meant to suggest a birth order, I wonder. Who is the author of this notice....?
I think the certificate might be useful to you.
-
Did you see these memoriam notices for Catherine LORKING in 1912?
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article15351917
I was actually looking for a probate notice. There is a gap in online indexes for probates between 1891 and about 1927 (very annoying). I didn't see a probate notice but I will check the microfiche index next time I am there. Hopefully if there is a probate it will have a death cert ...
cheers,
Ros

Yep, l did.
Also look re my last post on the Lorkings - attachment about the family.
I think that l have enough info. to work with at the moment.

Hi
Just been reading threads and the name of Hodson has come up with a "who are they?" . I think I may know. Im researching the Barnes line too and this is where I think Hodson fits. Patrick had 3 children with Adelaide - one was Catherine Barnes. I have a birth cert for a daughter Maude Elsie (from Catherine now johnston).
Now I have a New Zealand marriage cert 1905 listing Elsie Maude Johnston (parents Kathleen johnston nee Barnes father john williams johnston Barrister ) marriage to Harry Hodson actor. He is my great granfather. I think this must be your Hodson !
-
Hi Debrap
Still not sure how you fit into the greater Barnes family - confused !!

Hi
Not sure if I've already sent this lol new to this.
Just got Catherine Lorking's death cert. It lists 5 children, the eldest @ 32 is Elsie M. She is my Elsie maud (my ggran) who married Harry Hodson who are the hodsons in the funeral Notice. On Elsie 's birth certificate it has the father as Johnson 1879. I feel she(Catherine ) had Elsie and later married Lorking's as Elsie was raised as a lorkings.

Firstly I have to thank all, the info you guys have discovered and put on here it has given me sooo much to go on. I now have found the death cert for Elsie maud hodson/hodgson( Catherine Barnes / lorking daughter ) and so not to be left with no surprises found she had another daughter Joan, but not from harry hodgson (she is not named on his death cert) feel she is from another. So the search continues. Again thank you for a great site.
