Hi. I am quite unfamiliar with Canadian research, and am hoping someone might have some time to assist me.
I have just discovered that the second wife of my ancestor moved from Ireland to Ontario some time after 1840. I have a few census records from familysearch, but am hoping to get a bit more information on the family.
Will be happy for people to P.M. me if they might be able to help. Thanks, Katharine.

Hi Katharine,
If you would like to give a few details on here, we can have a look around for you.

I am firstly looking for a Catharine Julia GORE who was born around 1813 who was in the 1861 census in Medonte, Simcoe, Ontario, Canada.
I would love to know when she arrived in Canada with her young children, and if anyone can see any details of her death. She would have been a widow when she arrived.

Hi,
Library and Archives Canada site has census records available for free...
Here is 1861... Catherine with sons James B, George and Bentley in Simcoe.

Possibly your James (if middle name is Sylvester) - died in Muskoka in 1884.
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JK8N-765
Could this be your Bentley - died in BC in 1921?
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FLGL-J6L
Birth records on FS for George's children show that his wife's name was Mary Ennis.

George is a widower in 1891. Here he is with 3 kids, in Simcoe.

Thanks so much for those RunKitty. I would definately say that is Bentley's death. Is there an 1851 census for Canada? Or how can I find what year the family arrived in Canada?
Still looking for Catharine's death...
Can anyone tell me how I would find children of George's children? (It would seem his brothers James and Bentley both remained single. So I am hoping George's line continued through his children. I would love to get in contact with descendants!)
-
Hi
Yes, there is an 1851/2 census, though most, if not all, of Simcoe County records have not survived.
Early immigration records are extremely hard to find. I was hoping that I could find one of the children on a later census where year of immigration is one of the questions asked, ie 1901.
Civil registration started in 1869, so if Catharine died prior to that, you won't find her in the Ontario Deaths collection (availably on Ancestry, but also available.. for free.. on familysearch). I don't see her, so I wonder if she remarried, or perhaps died prior to 1869. If so, you would have to look at local records. You could contact the Simcoe County chapter of the Ontario Genealogical Society.

Wow. Thanks for all that Sandra - will take a while to process that all in my brain!
I did see George's attestation papers and burial, and after looking at his battalion history, think he must have died whilst still at training camp in Canada. Interesting that his brother was also trying to enlist.

If you have an Ancestry log-in Commonwealth records are free until the end of Monday (British time). It seems to work via ancestry.co.uk but not via ancestry.com .

Hi again all.
I would love to find an obituary for Agnes Henderer and her husband John Henderer both of Cottage Grove - death dates in posting as above.
Or any information on James Frederick GORE bc.1883 to George GORE and Mary ENNIS in Ontario, but he could have died in USA.
Thanks, Katharine.

Hi all. I am still hoping someone might know where I could get an obituary/death notice for Agnes (Le Beau) and John HENDERER? Or find further information on Frederick GORE. Could he be the man who died in 1972 at Kelowna, British Columbia? Maybe an obituary there will help too!
Thanks, Katharine.

I admit I didn't read this thread fully to know all the details of your Frederick, but I don't think think the Kelowna fellow is yours:

You have both dates of death for John and Agnes Henderer, might be worth contacting Cottage Grove Library to see if they can help you ? There is an "Ask th Librarian" link here

Just remember that even though civil registration started in 1869 it didn't mean that people/parishes were compliant. It took a long time for that to happen. My second-great grandmother's death in 1888 is not in any records that I can find. The only place I found it was on her gravestone.
