Title: Manchester: lost street. Where is Buckley St Newton Heath now?
Post by: JennyMarieGradwell on Tuesday 29 March 16 11:22 BST (UK)
Dear All,

My Great Grandfather lived briefly at 9 Buckley Street, Newton Heath, Manchester (as recorded in the 1901 census). The Parish was All Saints, Newton Heath (civil parish North Manchester).

It seems that Buckley Street Newton Heath doesn't exist anymore. I tracked down a record of a Sunday School on Buckley Street, indicating its name was changed to Bexley Street.

"A Sunday School was opened in Cross Street (later Crowbank Street) in the parish of All Saints, Newton Heath, on 8 April 1877, moving to Buckley Street (later Bexley Street), on 26 May 1878."

I've dug up some old photos of Bexley Street, Newton Heath by way of the Manchester Local Image Archive including the attached (from early 1970s), which is off Oldham Road and makes sense, location-wise.

But I can't find ANY mention of Bexley Street now! I know it is (or was) a row of terraces off Oldham Road, but I've been googling away and can't find whether it's been renamed again or just gone. There's a Bexley Walk in Newton Heath but it's a tiny little 'close' within a cluster of other small roads/cul-de-sacs.

Any tips on how to proceed or who to contact?

Many thanks!

Jenny Gradwell.

Hi Jenny,

Bexley Street has now gone, the picture you are showing is  Oldham Road, the corner of Bexley street.
Manchester images shows the street in 1972 with the terraced house facing East and West.

I agree Sarah, very addictive! I'm from Ashton under Lyne and it covers there and more. I will be spending a lot of time here
