This school photo was taken about 1919-21. It was possibly taken at Tayvallich School. Is anyone able to confirm this by the background or by recognising any of the pupils/teacher in the photo? Thank you.

Do you have any names/ages of people you think could be/are in the photo which may jog memories with others?

ADDED....Lovely photo

My Uncle James (Jim) Colquhoun who was born in March 1914 in Dunbartonshire is in the front row on the right. The family lived at Scotnish Farm for a short time where my Grandfather was farm manager. I know they were in the farm in October 1918 as my Mum was born there. My Uncle did go Tayvallich School (this may not be the correct name of the school) I know they had moved away from the area by 1921. I'm not sure what age my Uncle looks in the photo. If he is eight or older then the photo wasn't taken at Tayvallich as they had moved away from the area by that time. Thank you.

Sorry, I can't find a photo of the school.
I wonder if it was a "Sunday School" photo at the Church of Scotland.....
The shape of the window in the background of your photo is the same shape as the window here on the church....just a thought?

Looking at this photo......the addition to the right, looks similar to your photo but opposite side i.e. the photo may have been taken at the back of the church?
The dimensions of the windows look same too.

Thank you Rosinish. Yes it's possible the photo was taken at the church - the background looks similar. I know my Mum was baptised in that church in 1919 by D. Lamont. What age do you think my Uncle is in the photo? Thank you.

A couple of better photos of the church....

I'm not great with ages but looking at the height of the children against the teacher & their not so "baby" faces, I would say 7/8 yrs old but I'm going by looking at my own g/son who's 7 yrs.
Annie
-
I thought about 7 too.

It might be an idea to email your photo to the church with some of your family history with names/dates/places & ask if they can help you identify if that was where the photo was taken & maybe put names to others by asking other parishioners?

My guess would have been around 10 years old as their faces lose their roundness and become longer around that age to accommodate adult teeth.

My guess would have been around 10 years old
So, if Carol is correct, do you know where the family moved to, to find out where the photo was taken but it certainly looks like a church window in the background?

Yes I know that they moved to a farm at Easterhouse, Glasgow. I know they lived there in 1921 when my Uncle was born. The search continues!
-
If your Uncle was born in 1921 then the photo must have been taken around 1931 not 1919/1921?
I have a photo of an Uncle taken in 1932 wearing that knitted jumper and tie combination.
Carol

No sorry I didn't explain very well. My Uncle in the photo was born in 1914. His brother was born in 1921 at Easterhouse.
-
Is it possible the photo is of the younger brother?
Just another thought to help.
Annie
-
No it's the oldest brother who was born in 1914 that's in the photo. Thank you for all the replies
-
Just for reference....
Would be good to find out for sure though.

Do you use Facebook? There is a terrific group there, very active, called Old Lochgilphead and Surrounding Areas, which includes Tayvallich, where I lived as a child before immigrating to Canada. Post that photo on there and I bet you get some great advice from the locals. :)

Thank you for the suggestion about posting on facebook group.

I only have a scan of the photo but I found out from it's owner that the photographer was "Prophet, Glasgow"

Someone has already mentioned to you this site www.edinphoto.org.uk
Some details from there on the Prophet family of photographers here www.edinphoto.org.uk/PP_N/pp_prophet_family_and_business.htm

Yes it was me Monica and I think the website has been contacted.

Thanks Carol. Was just rechecking as saw on the previous page it was you ;)
Reading though that link, not sure that knowing who the photographer was will help much in this case. This family business seem to have specialiased in school photos but no clues on them it seems as to names of schools or locations. The locations of their studios not sure helps either: Edinburgh, Perth, Dundee and Glasgow.

Thank you for all the replies to my post. I'll have a look at the links and information you have provided.
