Hi all,
I don't know where to begin when researching South African relatives, so I thought I'd post here.
My grandmother was originally from South Africa, her maiden name was Jean Susan Gloria Stadler and she came to England in about 1960. She was born in Cape Town in July 1940.
Her mother was called Johanna Magdelena Zachs/Zacks, who was allegedly born circa 1906. There is a rumour she was originally from Russia, but I'm not sure. This is a dead end, hence why I am here. I wouldn't know where to begin.
My grandmother's father was called Albertus Ludewikus Antwone Stadler. He was born probably around 1900. The story here is that he died whilst at sea off the coast of South Africa in 1944, possibly when his ship/boat hit a mine. This is the only information I have, so another dead end.
Any advice on where to start would be appreciated, I've never researched ancestors outside of England so wouldn't know where to begin, or if records exist etc. If anyone with access to any South African records would fancy having a look, that'd be most appreciated too!

There is a Death Notice for an Elias Zacks born in Lithuania and died in 1936 in Cape Town. There are 5 children, Harry Jack, Connie, Molly, Minnie and Morris. He is possibly a relative. Don't know if any of the names ring a bell. His wife is given as Maita Zacks nee Shapiro and they were married in Lithuania she died in 1932
I'm just guessing of course but Johanna Magdalena sound like Afrikaans names so perhaps she married a Russian immigrant.
No luck so far with Albertus Stadler, but will keep looking.

Hi Sue, many thanks for the reply and for the information.
I am sure Johanna and Albertus married but I am not sure when, presumably before my grandmother Jean was born. I am pretty certain Johanna was known as Jean too.
Is there any resources for South African records I can use?

Ancestry has some South African records. Family Search has quite a lot, they are the first place I usually look. Geni.com as well depending on which families you are researching......
Will have a dig through the un-indexed marriages for Cape Town and see what I can find....

I'll have a look myself as well. Would be amazing to overcome a dead end, would be nice to be able to be able to tell my mum a bit more about her grandparents.

Hi these documents are held by Cape Archives - Kimberley. I have had a look at the one and can see no relation to your man. This person died in 1915 in Christiana in the Gordonia area of the Cape Province. There are 7 children listed and his spouse is given as Cornelia Gertruida Susanna Stadler.
If you like I can let you have the copy of the Death Notice, just pm me your email and I can send you the file. There is a will attached to it as well.
The other one unfortunately I cannot find at the moment but I would guess that she died not long after her husband and that is the winding up of the joint estate
