Title: William Hamilton Cunningham
Post by: AlexStewart on Wednesday 06 April 16 20:55 BST (UK)
I am seeking the birth or baptism of William Hamilton Cunningham who died in Londonderry on 17 June, 1919 aged 71, which puts his birth around 1848. I know he married Margaret Anne Young of Tyboe, Tyrone on 13 Nov 1883 in Glendermott Presbyterian church in Derry.
There is reason to believe he may have been connected with the Faughanvale Presbyterian church in County Londonderry not far from Eglinton.  He may have been baptized at Faughanvale. It may be he went to work in Tyrone where he met Margaret.
I understand the Faughanvale Presybterian records are in the library at Coleraine. Would anyone have access to them? I may be wrong about Faughanvale, but it is certain that William lived and died in County Londonderry and belonged to a Presbyterian family. His parents may have been John and Frances, but I have no certain evidence of that.
Thank you for any light someone can shine on William Hamilton Cunningham whose birth and parents have proved elusive!

Coleraine Library has a copy of the same microfilm of Faughanvale Presbyterian Church records to be found in PRONI- in Coleraine it's box #206
Bapt. 1819-1840 (typed), 1838-1983
Marr. 1845-1968

However, there are many Presbyterian churches in the area- these are only the ones with burying ground-

His parents may have been John and Frances, but I have no certain evidence of that.
What's his father's name and occupation from the 1883 marriage certificate? and what's listed as William's residence?

Have you found him in 1901 and 1911 census?

Thank you for your helpful point about the Faughanvale records. I am in the East of England, but I will, of course, consult them whenever I next visit Northern Ireland.
Good question about the name of William's father. I should have pursued that more thoroughly.
I was told that he may have been John, but now on further probing it appears he is down as Joseph.
Good point about the place of residence of William on his marriage in 1873.  He was in Arkame, which I believe is in Tyrone. That fits my point that he met Margaret in Tyrone as she was from Tyboe.
However, his father's name or his own address does not bring me his birth place, but those
two items may well help to trace William's family.
Yes, he is in the 1911 census at the Waterside, Derry, a Presbyterian, with Margaret Ann, but
it does not help with his place of birth.
Thanks for your help.

Buried City Cemetery?

The 1911 Census actually lists William, wife and son as all born Co.Derry.

Yes, on the 1911 census all three are as you say born in Co. Derry, but if you look at the 1901
census you will see that Margaret Anne  was born in Co. Tyrone.  One is wrong: I accept the 1901 as it is in keeping with Tyboe, Tyrone, for Margaret.
Another interesting clash is the age given to William. In 1901 he is down as 50, putting his birth around 1851, but in 1911 he is down as 68. Again I think the 1901 is about right as it in keeping with his death at 71, but the 1911 age of 68 would put his death much higher at 76.

Difficult to find the 1901 census from the details you originally posted (and I certainly did try yesterday) but here's the link for anyone else reading this topic-

I did not refer to the census originally because it does not refer to William's birthplace in detail. I gave details of the places in Londonderry and Tyrone where he is known to have lived.
Yes, the 1901 census mentions Campsie near Eglinton.  Yes, I hope someone else will comment on the original query about William Hamilton's birth place or baptism and his parents.
Thank you again for the points you made.

Where was he buried?

I do not know. Nothing was said to me about his burial. I was simply asked if I could discover his birthplace and his parents.
I will leave the matter there but hope that someone may throw light on his birth or parents.

I asked earlier if he was buried in the City Cemetery (Derry) and the reason is that their records usually include first names of both parents, religion and birthplace amongst other details.

I shall contact the City Cemetery and discover whether he is buried there.
Thank you for your assistance
