I would be grateful for further information on my husband's ancestor research. So far we have found the following:
His grandmother's family name was Arigho. As they lived in Dublin, we have found, on census returns:
Thomas Martin married Eliza ARIGHO.
Her father was John Arigho, born Caneggio, Switz, who married (firstly) Ellen Ryan, in Dublin.
John had a brother Louis, also born Swiss, who married a French girl Maria Estella.
His father was Louis Arigho, born Swiss, married a French lady Leontine Lefevre.
Would love to find out where the last two French and Swiss couples - father and son - married - possibly Switzerland as the two brothers John and Louis were both born in Switzerland. And the surname of Estella?
The Arigho family were also involved in printing bibles, we believe.
Any assistance gratefully received!
Thank you.

The name doesn't appear on the Register of Swiss Surnames (http://www.hls-dhs-dss.ch/famn/index.php ) but the alternate spelling Arrigo appears in Caneggio as having been there since before 1800.
There is very limited availability of Swiss records online. You can order microfilms of the Caneggio parish records if you have access to a family history centre:
https://familysearch.org/search/catalog/468490?availability=Family%20History%20Library
From where do you have that his father was also Louis? I can see the Louis of a similar age in the census, presumably the brother you mention. I see there are baptisms on familysearch to a Louis Arigho + variants and both "Leotine" and "Mary Estella", however looking at the children on the census I think these are all the same person, appearing as Estella in 1911.
Also, sites outside familysearch give different details, example, http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/ has the baptism of Mary Ellen Winifred "Arigi" in 1875, and gives her parents as "Luis" and "Estella Leontina", rather than "Mary Estella" as on familysearch. (This latter appears to be accurate to the images of the Catholic records which can be found on registers.nli.ie )
http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000639791#page/69/mode/1up
This looks to be the (church) marriage of John and Ellen Ryan. Gives his parents names as Baptiste and Constanza - I think their residence is just given as 'Switzerland'.
Hard to know where Louis and "Estella" may have married - Caneggio was very small at the time, around 400 inhabitants, and the chances are that the brothers had moved away to find work, possibly over the border into Italy or across to France.
In 1911 Estella says she has been married 46 complete years, five children with five living, putting their marriage circa 1865 although the first trace of children to them in Ireland that I can see is 1872.
-
Thank you for your prompt reply and the information.
Since posting my request I have found John Arigho's monument on 'find a grave' website and this confirms his father was Baptist. Having followed your link, its great to see his marriage to Ellen - and that Baptist and Constanza are named there.
John and Louis' parents got us confused with the son Louis - we found via family search the births of Constanza and George Leo to Louis Arigho and Leontine Lefebre, and can understand the confusion on her christian names, considering what you found.
We also found a Leontine Le Fevre born to Silean Le Fevre and Leontine Double in Paris about 1846, death 1915. Doesn't say where the death was. Wonder if this is our Leontine?
Thanks again for clarifications.
Kind regards.

I forgot to mention that my aunts told me that Estella and Luigi got married in
Nore Dame Cathedral in Rouen in France. I have tried contacting them looking for information but no luck. I may re try again but this time in French.

Have just seen your replies to my post ( started a long time ago now) regarding the marriage of Louis Arigho and Estella Leontine Lefevre. And your replies are so exciting, now not only have the correct spellings, but where and when they were married, etc!
Thank you so much for this and all your work and attention.
Will follow it up a.s.a.p.

Glad to make you happy with these finds .
I think that I found Estelle's brother , called Charles (see the marriage);

slide 73 .
The mother's name is Rosine (like in Estelle's birth certificate) ,. When Estelle married, her mother is called Rosalie ( must be a mistake in this document)
Charles birth gives Mont St Aignan as Rosine's birth place.
Still, I 'll search further in the registers , to be sure there is not another Charles LEFEBVRE born to a mother called Rosalie , not married.Estelle must have had at least a sister (see marriage) having married Eugène GARDIN
There were many LEFEBVRE in Rouen in those days .

The second forename of Pierre LEFEBVRE was Latuin (checked by a paleography forum), Latuin seems to have been often given in Normandy.

Many thanks, joger, you're a star - and up so early!
Information much appreciated. A lot to take in - have already got the maps out to see where the French family originated from. Now we have French and Swiss forebears, how exciting!

Hello,
I just found this message by googling for Baptist Arigho.
I am a descendant of John Arigho who was married to Ellen Ryan. He is my great-great grandfather on my mother's side. Great to have found this site, and the extra information in these posts.
I've been tracing my family tree, and have just started forcusing on this side of the family. So, far, I've only been using the information available on the Irish genealogical website. I've had also guessed that John and Louis were brothers from Switzerland, and that their father was Baptist. I had also discovered that Louis' wife had a French name, which made me think that he had been married before he came to Ireland. I heard from my uncle that apparantly there a scandal in Switzerland, which prompted their move to one of the most remote outposts in Europe.
I visited the Lugano area of Switzerland some years ago, very rural, quite unlike urban Dublin where they lived.
Regards,
Paul

Hi Paul,
Yes Louis and John were brothers. I am a descendant of Louis. Louis got married to Estella Lefevre from Rouen in France. I started a number of years ago on the family tree and I came across a Fr Arigho in Kimmage Manor in Dublin who is a descendant of John Arigho. Do you know him? He has a lot of informaiton on the Arigho's. I neaver heard of a scandal in Switzerland. however we were always told growing up that we were related to Pope Pius X but todate have never come across confirmation of this even though we got an Italian Genealogist to trace back and he went back as far as the 1700's.

Hello Marian,
Thanks for the reply.
My mother was born out of wedlock to George Arigho, linked to John Arigho as follows: John Arigho/Ellen Ryan ->George Arigho/Mary Green -> George Arigho/Brigid Nulty.
They never married, and we have never been able to discover what happened to her. Hopefully she didn't end up in one of the industrial schools/laundries in use at the time. We know the names of my mum's parents from the Baptismal Cert issued by the Pro Cathedral.
George Arigho later married.
I will ask my brother to contact Father Arigho in Kimage. This is the first time I've heard of him. How is he related to John/Louis?
Nice to have six sets of grandparents to research ;<)

Hi again,
I will ask my cousin Stella did her mother ever mention anything about George. She knew more about the Arigho's in Ireland than I did. I am sure there are relations around we don't know of.
I found out that my great grandmother Estella Lefevre who married Louis Arigho, well her mother had three children I think and she was never married.
I cannot remember how Fr. Arigho is related but I'd say John Arigho was probably his great grandfather and i know he has a brother living in Blackrock. I was in contact with him a few times and then he left for Africa. I'm sure if you ring Kimmage Manor they will know where he is no.

Hello Marian,
According to my mum's baptismal cert, her mother was Bridget/Brigid (I've tried both variations) Nulty. On the cert there is a handwritten note that she was born in the Rotonda. This also mentioned the sponsors Mary & Nicholas Nulty. The Rotonda doesn't have have any record of my mum being born there. The adoption records are sketchy, just an acknowledgement that the adoption was organised by St Joseph's Guild of Rescue and that my mum was handed over to my foster grandmother. This guild was run by the Dominicans, but they have no record of this. I've found a couple of published references to this guild, but the authors also have no futher info.
The Irish Genealogical record has a few Bridget/Brigid Nulty/McNulty. I'm trying to cross references these to the sponsors Mary & Nicholas Nulty.
Thanks for your interest.

Dear "joger"
Thank you so much for all your efforts, time and trouble giving us the wonderful family tree information on our ancestor Estella Lefebre.
We are very grateful, not only for your work but also to Rootschat which makes it all possible.
Best regards!

John Arigho was my great grandfather. I was brought up in the UK. Fr Des Arigho is my second cousin and there are quite a few Arighos still in Dublin. Des has done some research on the family, much of which he passed on to me. We know very little about Louis and have a feeling that the two brothers did not fraternise much when they were in Dublin.
My great grand mother was Ellen Ryan, his first wife and we know nothing much about that family. I was told that she was the daughter of his gardener.
John and Louis were from Caneggio in Ticino in Switzerland which I have visited.
George Arigho was my father's cousin who lived in Howth. Des's father, Jack Arigho, was a famous rugby player.

Hello, and how lovely to have another contact with the Arigho family.
My husband is related to the Arigho line via Louis and his wife Estella Lefebre, if you read back to the beginning of these posts. I have been able to do more on John, as he married a local girl. Your connection is really interesting. Until recently I couldn't find anything about Louis' wife until I posted on the European board with Rootschat.
Kimcrum and I have been following the "french lady" Lefebre searches with much interest, it has been amazing how far back the records go in France.
If you have any old family photographs, please let me know. It must have been lovely to visit their family village in Caneggio. We were in Menaggio a few years ago but at that time were unaware that we had been so close to the ancestors!
I saw on the internet a little while ago about Jack Arigho and his rugby career, very interesting to my husband as his father played rugby in a London club, my husband and son both played, we are fans of the sport - and we actually live in Rugby!
best regards.

Hello,
My husband is related to the Arigho family line through Mary Josephine “Maureen” Arigho (b. 1916, Dublin, Ireland and d. 2011, Phoenix, Arizona, U.S.A).
-Maureen is daughter of Renaldo Arigho & Mary Walsh
-Renaldo is son of Louis Arigho & Marie Estelle “Ellen” Lefebere (Levebre ? name variation)
-Louis Arigho is son of Baptiste Arigho and Constanza Arigho
Maureen spoke of Renaldo and Louis occasionally, I wish we would’ve asked more questions then...
Maureen and Pearse were married in Dublin, and lived there for a awhile. Then they left Dublin in 1956 on a ship called SS America and arrived in the USA a week later. Maureen would share stories with us regarding this family “religious” business and one in which she worked, at a shop located in Lourdes, France. She said she worked there during the late 1930’s and into 1940’s. She said she went to visit her aunt (Nancy??) who “kept shop” and then she was confined to France and couldn’t leave bc the war was taking place. We have one photo of Maureen’s sister (Philomena Arigho) in France in front of their religious store, and another photo of her on street by the store.
Question: I read in earlier post about a disagreement between the two brothers, John and Louis, I believe. Are there any further details? I’m curious if the shop in Lourdes had anything to do with this family dispute, since the business seemed to be primarily based in Dublin.
Question: I am not clear on all the men named George in this family line (and their spouses & children), and who/how they are related to others. Any clarity provided would be greatly appreciated.
Renaldo and Mary Arigho had the following children below. Only Maureen and husband Pearse moved to Phoenix, AZ, U.S.A; and her sister Philomena “Phil” married an American soldier she met in France, they married and moved to Sierra Vista, AZ, U.S.A where he was stationed and to live out their lives. The remaining sisters and one brother lived/died in Dublin. The descendants of these folks below (my husband’s cousins), are predominantly all living in Dublin.
-Mary Josephine “Maureen” and she married Pearse Winstanley (my husband’s parents)
-Philomena Teresa and she married Paul Daugherty (no children)
-Amelia married Gerald Coates (4 children, 1 set twins)
-Constance “Connie” married Jim Naessens (3 or 4 children)
-Estelle married Jim Brady (not sure about children)
-Louis Arigho married Avril Plunkett (twins)
Question: was John Arigho a twin or anyone else in this family?
Side note: Regarding the person who wrote in earlier post that this family was related to a person of high order in the church (Pius??), well Maureen used to tell us this story too. So this was information that was still being passed on, however I cannot confirm her story.
I hope this info is helpful to someone, I have photos of all these family members, please contact me if you wish to further conversation. I would appreciate anyone wanting to share any additional photos with me!
