Hi all,
I have used this site many times in the past and have been astounded and very grateful for the help and information found by fellow researchers. So I thought I would try my luck again.
I am now looking for any information of a Henry Swinnerton who divorced Frances Gladys Ethel Swinnerton about 70 years ago at the Bendigo Divorce Court. On the grounds of desertion.
I don't know who this Henry was or where he came from or went to, as I cannot trace him on any of the relevant Swinnerton family Tree's.
Thanks
bswinno.

It doesn't help with your quest but I think it was Henry , not Frances , who was divorced for desertion :

Henry Swinnerton married Frances Gladys Ethel Yeoman in Victoria in 1924. Hopefully someone will have access to further details of the marriage which may help.

Swinnerton's seem to have created their own family tree. ;D
William SWINNERTON and Wife Ellen Jane MANNIX, had that I can find, 10 children, one of which was Henry in Victoria just prior to and just after the turn of the century.
From Vic BDM Index

Henry was born 1899 at Heathcote Vic. Ref # 19297

So that now gives me Henry's parents names, and a place of birth.
Also his wife's surname.
I can now look to see if I can find them.
Thanks guys.

There are some on-line trees for Henry SWINNERTON b 1899, Heathcote, Victoria. These seem to be reasonably well-researched with mentions of his parents.
Marriage of parents:
NSW 1892 #5144, registered Mossgiel New South Wales
Ellen J Mannix
William Swinnerton
Although married in NSW the children listed on the trees were all born in Victoria registered variously at Bendigo, Strathfieldsaye and Heathcote.
There is no earlier information given re Ellen MANNIX but William SWINNERTON was, perhaps, born in Victoria, 1854
Birth
Victoria, 1854, #2282
William SWINNERTON
Birth Place Ballarat East, Victoria
Parents: William SWINNERTON, Eliza MCQUADE
Death:
Victoria, 1939, #16124
Wm SWINNERTON, 87,
Birth Year: abt 1852
Death Place: Bendigo, Victoria
Father's name: Wm SWINNERTON
Mother's name: Unknown
These would need to verified by certificate as there may have been another person of the same name and about the same age.

Possible death for Ellen
Victoria, 1924 #13054
Ellen Jane SWINNERTON, 60
Place of death; Bendigo, Victoria
Father's name: Jas MANNIX
Mother's name: Johanna FINNERTY
There is a birth for another Ellen MANNIX in Victoria in 1870 with different parents - so I think it's a different person.

Hi, Judith,

For William 29/7/1939

There is an indexed marriage for Frances Ethel Gladys SWINNERTON in 1934 in Victoria.
It confirms the above listed death as correct.
Sue

Yes it was the Bell marriage which is correct. Apparently Frances married another two times.
-
Henry Swinnerton born 1861 Crowlands Frances first husband.
Now looks like he was the son of William Swinnerton and Eliza McQuade.
I need to prove that this was right.

This one, who was 44 years her senior.?

What is the source of this information please swinno?
The divorce was in 1934 and this chap was already dead then ::)

I think it's one of those families who re-used forenames across generations and for cousins etc.
This is how I see it:
Henry SWINNERTON
b1899 Heathcote,
m Frances Yeoman 1924,
divorced 1934
Henry's parents:
William SWINNERTON,
b 1854 Ballarat East,
m 1892 NSW
d 1939 Bendigo
Ellen J MANNIX,
William's parents (Henry's grandparents) -this information comes from the birth index entry for William b 1854)
William SWINNERTON
Eliza MCQUADE
William and Eliza were the parents of the Henry SWINNERTON, b 1861, registered at Crowlands. Thus the Henry registered at Crowlands in 1861 would be an uncle of the Henry reigistered at Heathcote 1899 with parents William and and Ellen and who married Frances in 1924.

Once again I applaud the researches on this site for the information they find.
Now having added the relevant info to a Swinnerton Tree I see that The Henry
Swinnerton who I first inquired about born 1899 in Heathcote. Was in fact the son of
William and Ellen Jane Mannix. And the grandson of William and Eliza Mcquade.
Of course this all requires verifying with certs.
Another thing that eludes me is what happened to Henry born 1899. We know now that he was divorced from Frances for desertion. WHERE did he dissapper to?
Thanks everyone for your help.

This is the death of a child of the couple-
SWINNERTON Royston Jos
Father SWINNERTON Hy Jno
Mother Frances Gladys Ethel YEOMAN
Death Place BENDIGO
Age 1 year
Year 1928
Reg 8750
We may assume from this that the couple were together to 1927ish and possibly living at Bendigo, though there is no electoral roll listing for either of them.
It is possible that Henry deserted the family, began to use a different name and the divorce may even have been granted in his absence. The newspaper item does not say.
It will be a big challenge to locate him, I think. :o
Sue

Perhaps this is his death? His second forename was given as John on the death entry for his child as given by Sue above. However, as there were at least nine siblings for Henry, plus cousins with similar names, and this chap's age is out by a couple of years you would need to see the certificate as it may be a brother.
Victoria, 1946 #22513
Jno SWINNERTON, 44
Death Place: Bendigo, Victoria
Father's name: Wm Jas Swinnerton
Mother's name: Ellen Mannix
Edit to add: I have struck this through. I now think this death is a brother of Henry as there is a birth registered in 1902 for John SWINNERTON with the same parents.

I am looking into the Swinnerton family and there is a Swinnerton Family Society newsletter printed in England that may have some connections.
My guess at this early stage of research is that a couple of Swinnerton families came to Victoria from Betley, Staffordshire.
The Henry Swinnerton, whose wife Gladys [Yeoman]was granted a divorce in 1934, may be the grandson of Wm Lunt Swinnerton bp. 7 Jan 1821 in Forton, Staffordshire. Wm Lunt Swinnerton's parents were Thomas Swinnerton and Esther Lunt, who married 14 May 1815 Betley. The father was a game keeper who first lived in Betley, then moved onto Sutton, near Forton, Staffordshire, before moving back to Betley by the 1841 Census.
The Swinnerton Society have a tree for Thomas Swinnerton and Esther Lunt; however, only list 5 of 9 chn that I have found. Yes, William bp 1821 is not mentioned on that tree.
There is a man in Ballarat who descends from Ruth Swinnerton, the above Henry Swinnerton and Gladys Yeoman (divorced). I am sure that he would be interested in following up the Swinnertons.
-
Hello K Rees,
The online tree will be out of date by now. I'm sure without looking that the one I have might show so further information. I will look when home.
In what way are you looking into the Swinnerton family as I may be able to help you?

Hi there. I’ve just joined and tracing my family tree. I googled Swinnerton Bendigo and found this thread.
My grandfather Leslie Swinnerton was born in Bendigo around 1904. He raised a family in Echuca. My mother moved to Sydney.
Hoping you can point me in the right direction to look at a family tree if there’s a connection here.
Thank you.
-
Yes SWelchy I do have your family tree it is called the Betley Tree.
Leslie was one of twelve children to William Swinnerton and Jane Mannix.
At present the family trees on the Swinnerton family History site are not visible
as they are being upgraded.
You can probably help me with family information as the family tree only shows Leslies siblings
year of birth apart from Henry John Swinnerton who is up to date.
I also have a Facebook site named Swinnerton Family group who has over 100 members, some who are related to you.
-
Yes, I may be able to point you in the right direction, assuming your grandmother was Christina Maher.

Christine Ann Maher wife of Leslie Swinnerton.

Yes thank you.
Christine Maher was my grandmother.
They had 5 children.
