Title: Esther C Ewing b.1889 Seattle/Thos.H. Timson
Post by: Chooch on Tuesday 12 April 16 08:14 BST (UK)
Hi

I would appreciate any help available finding a marriage of Esther b.1889 and Thomas Harry Timson who was born UK 1891 but arrived in US 1911-14. I have him arriving Quebec August 1911 on the Lake Manitoba aged 19.
A son was born to them Oct.1915 King Washington so presumably they were married before then.
Thomas and Esther continued living in Washington.
Esther died 1975 King, Washington and Thomas died Jan.1971 Port Townsend, Jefferson.

Regards
Chooch

The 1930 census says that Thomas arrived in the US in 1915 and had filed his first papers for naturalization.  The year might be off, but the naturalization papers should probably give an exact date of his border crossing.

Thomas H. & Esther Timson are together in the 1916 Seattle city directory.

There are some Washington marriage records here - http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/Search - but I haven't found them there yet.

The Seattle City directory has them listed together in 1916 which would be a compilation of residents in 1915.  His WWI DRC (1917) lists a wife and child as dependents.  Esther C Ewing is a telephone operator in the 1915 directory, so she is single in 1914 for at least part of the year.

If you search for "Esther Ewing" in the Seattle Times archives here - http://www.rootschat.com/links/0184x/, there appear to be two mentions of her as a bridesmaid in June, 1914.

Again many thanks to you both Genealiza and shellyesq. I would appear  then that Thomas and Esther would have married sometime between abt. mid 1914 and Oct.1915 when their son Donald was born.

Hi, I am spouse of one of Esther and Thomas Timson's grandsons. I have more family information to share if you are interested --- one of the other grandchildren has done some extensive research.

Hello, welcome to rootschat :)

My connection to the Timson family is very distant but Thomas's grandfather Henry/Harry  had a brother Benjamin c.1822 whose widow Eleanor married into my Tillcock family.
Does this track with your information?

I will check the research file --- currently buried in the office! and see what we have on Thomas Harry Timson's grandparents...

I do not think that anyone has been able so far to find PROOF of Thomas and Esther's marriage. There is family gossip that perhaps they were never married...? If you are able to find substantiation, that would be great

More later... and thanks for the welcome!

OK, I am looking at the records for Harry Thomas Timson -- our cousin has traced his paternal line back, so we have his grandfather Henry (Harry) Timson b. 1835 Ware, England, d. 1893  -- but no information listed for the siblings of same. So I cannot confirm the connection to your family.

Best, Maria

Hello. Esther (Ewing) and Harry Thomas Timson were my paternal grandparents  and I have information on his direct paternal line back to Benjamin Timson born 1774 (my grandfather's great-great-grandfather). From this Benjamin until my grandfather, the men were all bargeman, all married to bargemen's daughters, and all born in Ware, England. Some were Roma (gypsy) and/or married Roma women, not uncommon among bargemen then. His paternal grandfather Henry (Harry) Timson had a brother named Benjamin (b. 5/23/1824) who married Eleanor Cordell in 1844. One of their children was Benjamin Cordell Timson, who married Susan Tilcock in 1875. In turn, one of their children was Benjamin John Timson, b 1876, who fell on hard times. See "The Quality of Mercy Strained--Theft from a Barge: A Sad Case", Herts Mercury 26th May 1906, by Brian S.

I do not have a marriage date for my grandparents, but Washington was a common law state so one way or another they were married. The story goes that they met in British Columbia while Esther was visiting relatives there. I am surprised to hear about naturalization paperwork because my grandfather reportedly remained undocumented at least through WWII. Stories abound.
