On the 1901 and 1911 census there is no shop or person on Old Post Office Lane referred to as a Butchers
1901 (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000941325/) and 1911 (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai002645814/) the same families are living there on each census in private dwellings

John MARKS died of Asthma and Bronchitis on Oct 19 1886 in Birr
and was described as married and aged 58

LINK (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/King_s_Co_/Birr_Urban/Market_Square/1461889/) to 1901 Census return of Bridget MARKS a widow
with her daughter Anne CLEARY also a widow, Mary GARRATT married and some grandchildren
noting grandson Michael CLEARY is a butcher
and is still a butcher in Birr on 1911 census (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/King_s_Co_/Birr_Urban/Castle_Street/551254/)

LINK (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/King_s_Co_/Birr_Urban/Market_Square/551590/) to 1911 Census return when Bridget is still living with her daughter Anne CLEARY

Records show that
Agnes Mary MARKS (F) John a soldier, married George Thomas GARRETT in 1884

Alice MARKS (F) John a soldier, married John TODD in 1885

but strangely Anne MARKS (F) James a shopkeeper, married Michael CLEARY a butcher in 1879
which doesn't tie if Annie and Mary were sisters on the census
but these were transcriptions I was reading and there can be errors
LINK (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FYQV-CPR) Civil reference of marriage record which could be purchased to confirm who Ann MARKS father actually was

Her children were baptised in Birr
Mary Jun 15 1880
Annie May 15 1881
Michael Jun 20 1882 - LINK to civil record of marriage (http://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details-civil/912bbc6748239)

possibly this couple
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01hhj/

dathai's suggestion is also worth following as this couple
John MARKS and Catherine CONNOLLY/CONNELLY
had at least 8 children between Co. Kildare and Co. Laois (Queens Co).
On the baptisms of two, the father John, is shown as the 66th Regiment

Also found the Birr Butchers on Connaught Street in 1901 LINK (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/King_s_Co_/Birr_Urban/Connaught_Street/1461549/)

William MARKS and his sister JULIA and a niece & 2 nephews
There is a William b May 23 1858 whose parents are Denis MARKS & Ellen GANTLEY
with a sister Julia b Dec 27 1863
and at least two more siblings Ignatius b Apr 8 1855 and John b Sep 3 1843

Aileen/Eileen married Thomas DURR in 1901 LINK (http://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details-civil/02367d6814822)
Her marrriage cert should state her father's name to help make a connection

Eileen/Aileen    Mary Ellen ?

very interesting - that would be another family!

More interesting is on NLI Records (http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634658#page/157/mode/1up) the mother of Mary Ellen is shown as M.; A. possibly H.; HORAN or possibly HONAN! not FOLEY

LINK (http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634658#page/171/mode/1up) Baptism of Denis in 1873

A Mary Anne MARKS died aged 37 on Mar 18 1886 in Maryboro Workhouse
She was described as a butcher's wife

If this page and readers is still active I can supply much information on Offaly/Birr Marks as my great-grandmother was the Annie Marks mentioned married to Michael Cleary.

Welcome to RootsChat, Tom  :)

Whatever you can add, will be of benefit to the thread. Remember that RootsChat has a no living persons policy, so don't post names of any living people.

There is now an updated (2020) headstone for James and Bridget Marks (1820 - 1900s) and three of their daughters - Agnes Mary, Annie and Bridget. Agnes Mary married Capt George Garrett, (buried in Drogheda), Annie is my Great-grandmother and Bridget married Joseph Bowes. There were no surviving male issue/descendants of James and Bridget that we know of. Until mid 2020 we did not realise that Agnes Mary Marks and Mary Walshe (daughter of Annie Cleary) were buried in this grave. New text replaced all the old text in 2020.

Tom,
I'd be most interested to hear from you as I suspect my Waterford Marks' are somehow linked to the Birr ones.

Hello Audrey,
I'd be delighted to explore any links. Basically there were lots of Marks families in Birr in the 1821 Census (NationalArchives). There sees to be two branches - our branch were all butchers and other descendants were in the Military. I haven't been able to trace any direct Marks descendants living from our line (lots of cousins from maternal lines) but there are Marks families _ James - living near Roscrea. I'm in touch with him from time to time. His father Paddy and grandfather were military. Paddy Marks wife was a Jane Price. If this sounds promising we can arrange direct email contact.

Agnes Mary Marks married George Garrett on 25 February 1884 at St Brendon's Parish Church, Birr. George a sergeant in the 109th regiment and based at Birr barracks. Agnes' father James a butcher.

Just a note to "My luck" contributor. The Michael Cleary married to Annie Marks were my Great-grandparents and their son Michael was my grandfather. Agnes Mary Marks and Annie were sisters and their father was James, their mother Bridget Garrett.... not related to the George Garrett who married Agnes Mary (Molly)
