Title: Henry Dennison
Post by: EdCan on Wednesday 20 April 16 00:58 BST (UK)
According to 1881 Clapham census Henry was born abt 1851 Bradford. He married 26 Apr 1875 St Paul Shipley to Sarah Ann Louisa Hodgson(1853-93). According to marriage record his father was William Dennison a basket maker. His birth does not appear to have been registered and I can not find a baptism record. The only census that I can find is the 1881 Clapham. Henry died 1883 Wandsworth.
Can anyone find a record for him prior to the 1875 marriage please?

If he fudged his age a bit there is a birth Dec 1847 Bradford  :-\

Does his age at marriage tally with the 1881 census?

He was of 'full age' when he married  :)

Was he a full bachelor?

Only there's a Henry plasterer father William marrying in 1870 age 21.

I wonder if he was illegitimate and William Dennison was a step father but can't find him before 1881 :(

What do you think - Signatures are from the 1870 marriage and the 1875 marriage

Hiram,Robert and Alice E are born as SCHERER (I think). Crazy part is an Eliza SHERER shows as a possible spouse 1847 Bradford to Manasseh DENNISON.

It's too early in the morning for this! :)

Thanks everyone for your effort. After your good work Henry still seems to be a puzzle. The two marriage signatures seem to be somewhat the same especially "Henry" but don't take my word for that.

Well,I don't know what his birth has been registered as but Henry DENNISON son of Manasseh and Eliza born 24 Sep 1850 and baptised Bradford 16 Oct 1850 sure looks right to me.

He (Henry) and Eliza are M*cKAY in 1851 and 1861.

Just thinking aloud  ;D

1851 census for Wm & Eliza M*cKay has Mother in law Elizabeth Young born Frankfort .... Her sons also have the surname Young so Elizabeth Snr has probably not remarried & that is Eliza's surname.

I agree that William & Eliza M*cKay in 1851/61 tie in with the Dennison family of 1871  ;D

The first child showing on the 1851 for this couple is James age 9 born Leith, Scotland - The next is William age 5 bn Bradford

It's a tangled mess!

I don't think the son born in Scotland was Eliza's.

I'm getting:

Baptisms at Bradford with mother Eliza...a "spinster"
25 Sep 1845
William Sherer

21 Sep 1855
Hiram Sherer

4 Nov 1859
Alice Elizabeth Shearer
and
Robert Shearer
...
So she married Man* DENNISON and they baptised Henry as a couple but by 1851 she's with Mr McKAY-stays with him until after 1871 when she reverts to Dennison and then just for a change of pace becomes a YOUNG.(which may or may not have been her maiden name?)

I don't see the DENNISON chap in 1851 but he's got a new "wife" by 1861.

I wonder if this could be Henry with his older brother in 1871:

So am I correct in assuming that Dennnison is Henry's correct surname but the father William on the marriage records is actually stepfather William McKay?

I'm not sure at this point!

It certainly looks as though he's used William McKay's occupation on the 1878 marriage.

If Rosie is correct and that is him marrying in 1870 as well then it looks as though he's put down the occupation of his brother (William a joiner.).

Tough crowd to chase. :)

What we know about Manasseh  ;D

1841 has him as 12 living with his mother Mary and siblings.

1847 he marries Eliza Sherer

26 Oct 1849 he was in the 7th Foot (until 1855 )

24 Sept 1850 Henry son of Manasseh & Eliza was born

1851 we believe Eliza was living with William M*cKay as his wife

1861 Manasseh is 'married'  to Elizabeth Fieldhouse (Fieldhouse children also there )

Mannaseh Dennison of the 7th Foot (Royal Fusiliers) was my G x 4 (I think... lose track of how many generations back he was!) Grandfather.

The reason for his short service in the Army is that he was wounded at the Battle of the Alma during the Crimean War and was subsequently discharged.
