Title: Caleb C Smith
Post by: PennyvdB1949 on Thursday 21 April 16 18:18 BST (UK)
I was sent this photo today I believe it to be my Great Grandfather Frank Palmer b1875 in Lincoln and died 1915 in Lincoln. . I'd be grateful if anything can be done with it, it's actually in 2 halves. Any info on Caleb C Smith when he was at 1 norman Place would be very useful to try and date it . thank you

And he also advertised for an improver to work for him at Lincoln in May 1888 in "The Photographic News".

I tried to make it more clear ...He looks like 19 years old(+-2) ..so photo date would be 1892-1895

This looks awesome guys!
What software are you using? Do you know any online tutorials? I'd love to learn photo restoration but it's quite difficult to figure things out on my own.

I use, almost exclusively, GIMP.  Its an open source free download and a very powerful tool. Photoshop has more features but can be a bit minty for the occasional user. There are others too but I have found GIMP serves me well enough. Youtube has dozens of tutorials on whatever software you settle on. The tutorials will give you a decent grounding on the basics, but there is no substitute for getting a photo up and getting stuck in and learning for yourself. You will find that what works on one image doesn't necessarily do the same on another so you learn as you go. I've been using it for years and I doubt that I have even scratched the surface on what it can do.

I have only been doing the restorations for a relatively short period, as previously I tended to mainly  dodge about with my own pics and doing fun pics for my kids and grandkids. The restorations however, give me an immense amount of satisfaction and knowing that someone else benefits from the result, even more so.

I have also learned a lot from all the restorers on here. What a great bunch of generous and like minded souls they  all are. This whole site restores your faith in human nature. If you have any queries you can always PM me.... go for it!

I can echo what Handypandy has said - GIMP is incredibly powerful, especially when you add the G'MIC plug-in.
There are also many additional filters downloadable from the internet.

Have a look at the tutorials and the various helpful sites about GIMP, and then learn by playing with it!

I agree wholeheartedly with what has been said...I use Photoshop Elements 9 but although I haven't used Gimp I know that many have had some really good results with it.
Start with easy photos that have a few small cracks or creases to build up your confidence. There are many online tutorials but there is no substitute for hands on learning as there are many ways to achieve the same result and you will find a way that suits you. Practise and patience is the key, but most of all...enjoy the hobby...it is very addictive and time consuming but very satisfying too.

What are you waiting for  ;D

I just used my basic program Photo editing program that came with Windows 8. My restoration was probably not as good as some other people's attempts on here.
But it is good enough for me anyway.  :) ;)

Ok, so this one is severely overcooked, but a decent likeness I think.

Hello There,

Looking at this post, the photographer Caleb C Smith is the same photographer who took a photo of my great grandma Lilian Pennington. It has the same addresses on the front and back.
Lilian was born on the 31st of August 1889 in Lincoln, and she looks to be around 2 years old in this photo. I also found out that in the 1891 census, Caleb C Smith was indeed put down as being at 1, Norman Place: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:WTZF-76Z

Hi William,
Your photo could be better restored if you could do a scan at  300/400 dpi. There is very little for the restorers to work with.  There is a tutorial at the top of the forum for guidance re scanning.
Good luck, I envy people with great photos like these.

Cheers,
Di

I don't think he's asking for a restore Di... just adding a photo by the same photographer.

Hello There,

I presume the person addressed to "William" was supposedly addressed to me?
Anyway, I saw this post on here and saw that it was by the same photographer. I only just started playing around with Irfanview photo free software yesterday. The photo was of my great grandma.

The image I posted was actually scanned at 600dpi. Because you cannot post images higher than 500kb on here I went to the section of the program of Irfanview : "Resize/ Resample Image".
Before I resized it I ticked the box called: "Preserve Aspect Ratio (proportional)." I didn't tick the box entitled: "Adjust dpi based on new sizes."
I only just started doing this yesterday.
I didn't put it on here for somebody to do a restoration.
I will post another version of the photo on here. I am still getting used to the programme.
If I DID want a restoration (which I don't thank you by the way), would this give somebody "more to work with?":

Thank you very much.  :) ;)

Hi...to meet the requirements for restoration on this forum the file size is too small at only 75kbs. You can post a file size of up to 500kbs on here which is recommended for best results and a good printout.
Hope this answers your question.

Hello, yes thank you very much. :) ;)
My apologies. I have just realised there is probably a big difference  between  a restoration  and what the person  wanted doing with the image they originally posted at the beginning  of this topic . That would explain why the original  topic image of  Frank Palmer posted  was around 67kb. And so would  have  to have been a lot higher  for it to have been put on here for  a restoration .
Apologies again  I am a novice, haha! :)
The photo I scanned was scanned at 600dpi. It's file size came to 735.57 kb. The width in pixels was 1541 wide by 2460 high.
I put it into Irfanview. I don't know what I was doing wrong, but it seemed like I had to do a lot to it before I saw the file size coming down to anywhere near 500kb. I scanned it at 400dpi, and it came straight out at around 300kb. I played around with it in Irfanview and I think it has now come out to around 429kb.
So just for future reference please, would this be any better? It just looks really big and massive on the screen, but I suppose the bigger the better maybe?
Thank you.
