Their children
1883/3936 Squire John Strathern Gilmore Jane Joseph Thomas
Hi Janette...
Just a note that the attestation (Image 5) for...
1883/3936 - SQUIRE, John Strathern Gilmore - mother: Jane father: Joseph Thomas - d.o.b 3 Feb 1883
...says his father was born in Kent, England. Not sure what that's about.
Note that parts of the record call his father Thomas William SQUIRE but I think they've confused the brother (Thomas William) and the father (Joseph Thomas)

Hello Juleznz...
Welcome to Rootschat :)
Here is the probate file for the John Thomas SQUIRE mentioned above. Are any of the names familiar.

Hi everyone wow thanks for such prompt replies and info :) i have most of the NZ stuff but its the Canadian side im having difficulty with
-
Hi...
So where did you get the info that your man was born in Toronto.
And do you have a year of birth (as opposed to year of death minus age at death).
Or parents/siblings names.
Regards
Beg
-
On his death cert it lists toronto canada as his place of birth and his age thats all i have
-
Hi Beg,
John Strathern Gilmore Squire appears to have little knowledge of his parents stating also that both had been in NZ 37 years which is approx. 1880 when they married in 1875 in NZ
Cheers Janette
-
Janes sister Helen CAMPBELL married John Strathern GILMOUR and have found conflicting info with Joseph and Janes son being named after him
-
Hi Janette...
Yep. Saw that. Just another grain of salt to add to the pile we've accumulated over the years.
And now that "Birthplace: Toronto" seems to have come from a death certificate we can add that one too :-)
Regards
Beg

im conscious of not taking death cert info seriously but strange they would put canada ? but then informant is listed as the undertaker
-
Did Joseph and Jane separate as I don't see her in the ER's in Auckland?
Cheers Janette
-
it seems so she died and is buried in Petone Wellington
-
This may be Jane and Helen arriving in 1867

thats quite interesting thank you and odd coincidence i have them arriving with parents and siblings on the same ship but in 1874..they are on 1871 census still in scotland ..same names and same point of origin tho
-
That must be this family

yes thats them :)

Hi Juleznz.........
Re reply #2: Just wondering if you have considered obtaining a birth printout for one of the Squire children?
The birthplace of both parents should be shown and would therefore settle the Canadian connection.
Minniehaha.

Hi ... just noting that Joseph Thomas (according to electoral rolls) appears to have resided with, or close to, his son Thomas, in Arch Hill, Auckland. Joseph also died at his son's (Thomas') residence, so although undertaker is noted as informant on d/c, very likely his son supplied the information.
Agree, that obtaining a birth printout for one of the children of Jane and Joseph may assist with confirming where Joseph was born. [NZ birth registration from 1876, includes info on parent's places of birth.]
Of interest ... there are seemingly others researching this family ... one online tree (@ ancestry) shows a partial copy of the 1875 marriage certificate (Jane and Joseph Thomas). ???
No evidence in these "trees" that researchers have supporting evidence of Joseph's birth ... two give his birthplace as "Bedfordshire, UK" - differing years ... another suggests he was born "Illinos [sic] USA"
(Illinois ?) ???

Beg
-
no mention on death cert..ive found his marraige cert but in that era birthplace or parents wasnt required
-
Hi juleznz
(I think Q. asked earlier on here) ... but have you checked Canadian Censuses ???
Some of these appear to be freely searchable online.
Try surname "SQUIRES" as well as SQUIRE.
Maybe post a look-up request ... or ask for assistance on the R/Chat Canada Board.
~ Lu
PS ... getting a printout for one of his children's births registrations probably a better first move. ;D
-
here is one extract of birth

Hi, hopefully I am doing this correctly, I am the Granddaughter of John Strahan Gilmore Squire and daughter of Harold Squire. I have quite a lot of information on the descendants of Joseph Squire and am happy to share it with you. Not sure how I go about doing it so maybe you could help me. I also have photos. Glenys

Juleznz, I also have information on Jane Campbell and her family. I have just decided to start looking at family tree again. I have wondered if Joseph Thomas Squire was born, as he has stated on birth certificates of his children, in America. Years ago I found a Joseph Thomas Squire born in England and wondered if that was him. There is a book in the Auckland library with a list of Deserters from ships that had come to NZ. There was a Joseph Thomas Squire in that book dates fitted in with around time I thought he arrived here so have often thought he may have been covering something up. Was just a thought have not tried to find anymore out about him. Two Campbel sisters married on the same day, same place and time, Jane to Joseph Thomas Squire and the other sister, Helen (if I remember correctly). Helen married john strathon Gilmore. They never had children so presume sisters were very close and that is how my Grand father got his name. Glenys
