Title: Whats the regiments name?
Post by: CuriousKat on Friday 29 April 16 18:33 BST (UK)
Hello please excuse my ignorance but could someone verify the regiment for me?
On the 1901 census im looking at Herbert Savory 1883 b Sheffield (spelt Sa??cory) on ancestry.
He's at Chatham Bks listed as a private infantry lines.  At the very beginning of the census is a Colonel next to which says Infantry Militia, a lot of the soldiers seem to be from Scotland.
In Herbert's reform record an entry dated 1901 stated that he had joined the scot's & greys though an entry in 1902 says he had deserted. Could this be the same regiment?

Scots and Greys can only be the Scots Greys - or 2nd Dragoons - a cavalry regiment. The barracks includes three infantry regiments. One Militia - normally part-timers but may be embodied for the Boer War - and two of the (Line), ie Regular regiments.

I have checked a number of nearby men for their records. But found nothing obvious to suggest any of the three regiments.
